The 6th house treats planets in reverse of their nature. Saravali's verses show the pattern (Ch. 30 Sl. 7-79): the natural malefics, Sun, Mars and Saturn, are given strength, affluence and victory over enemies there, while the benefics get the worst readings in the chapter. The Moon is a benefic, and in the 6th it gets one of its harshest verses. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator puts it in one line: placed in the sixth, the Moon "will lose all her good significations".
That is the starting point, not the whole reading. The Bhrigu Sutras attach the familiar condition: a waning Moon gives fully malefic results, a Moon with a benefic a strong constitution. And BPHS adds lordship, including three rising signs where this app reports a Vipareeta yoga. This page sets them out and explains why the app's line here is always the testing one. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 6th house, Ari Bhava; for the contrast with a malefic here, the Sun in the 6th.
Sources, and health
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The 6th is the house of illness in BPHS, and the Moon verses name bodily complaints; those are what a text says, not medical advice, and this app computes no lifespan.
The house of enemies, ulcers and service
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 7 gives the 6th five things: the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers and the step-mother. Ch. 17 Sl. 1 narrows the house chapter to diseases and ulcers. Saravali names the house Ari, enemy, and Vrana, a wound. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (p. 15) adds service, employees, debts and litigation; BPHS itself lists debts under the 10th (Ch. 11 Sl. 11), so this page keeps the two lists apart.
The 6th carries three labels at once (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36): an Apoklima, a Dusthana and an Upachaya. For malefics the Upachaya label wins in the texts. For benefics it is the other way round: the house is hard on them for their own results, though not on every planet. Yet both BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 and Saravali's Dhana Yoga (Ch. 13 Sl. 32) count benefics in the Upachayas as a wealth combination. The sources leave that tension unresolved: a benefic in the 6th is weak for its own results and still counts toward a wealth yoga.
The Moon verses
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 19
The verse (p. 101): "If the Moon be in 6th, the native will suffer stomachial diseases. If it be the weak Moon, he will be short-lived." It has no favourable clause. Both of its statements are bodily, and both are reported here only as what the text says, not as medical advice or a forecast.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 33-40
The sutras (pp. 38-39): "the native will be poor and of diseased body", with an illicit relation with a widow in the 36th year. With a malefic, sinful deeds and ill health. With Rahu or Ketu: no wealth, dangerous enemies, quarrelsomeness, no brothers, stomach ailments, and danger from watery places. "If the Moon is waning, it will give totally malefic results"; with a benefic, a strong constitution free from disease. These are the text's statements, not forecasts. The commentator (p. 39) gives the reasoning: placed in the sixth she "will lose all her good significations". So the sutras give a harsh default, make it harsher for a waning or afflicted Moon, and give one way out, a benefic's company.
| Source | Reading | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 19 | Stomach diseases | A weak Moon: the verse says short-lived |
| Bhrigu Sutras 33-40 | Poor and of diseased body; named conduct and age clauses | Waning: totally malefic. With Rahu or Ketu: enemies, quarrels, stomach ailments. With a benefic: a strong constitution |
| Bhrigu commentary | The Moon loses all her good significations in the 6th | A general statement for this house |
| This app, phMoon6F | Real resilience against rivals and obstacles when well supported | Never printed: the engine requires a house outside 6/8/12 |
| This app, phMoon6U | Health strain, financial pressure and a house that needs deliberate care | Printed for every Moon in the 6th |
Phase: where "weak" and "waning" come in
Both verses make the Moon's condition decisive: Saravali's "weak Moon" and the Bhrigu Sutras' "waning Moon". BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts the decreasing Moon a malefic. A translator's note to BPHS after Ch. 3 Sl. 11, attributed to the Yavanas, grades the Moon by its distance ahead of the Sun: medium to 120 degrees, very auspicious from 120 to 240, without strength from 240 to 360. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17 says the same in lunar days.
| Moon ahead of the Sun | Paksha | Strength (Saravali Ch. 5) | Reading in the 6th by the Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 120 deg | Shukla (waxing) | Medium | The default: poor and unwell |
| 120 to 180 deg | Shukla | Exceedingly strong | The default, from the strongest Moon |
| 180 to 240 deg | Krishna (waning) by paksha | Exceedingly strong | Waning by one measure, strongest by the other |
| 240 to 360 deg | Krishna | Very little | The "fully malefic" case |
The third row is the one to be careful with. The first five days of the dark fortnight are waning by paksha and inside the strongest band by elongation, and that the translator's note lets a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turn benefic, which is the Bhrigu Sutras' own escape clause in different words. The Moon phase calculator reports the elongation for your birth. This app counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase.
The 6th lord inversion, and the Moon
The Bhrigu Sutras read the 6th lord upside down. Venus Sutras 34-36 (p. 92): a strong 6th lord increases relations and enemies, and one with a malefic, debilitated or with the Moon brings loss of relations and destruction of enemies. The commentator's reasoning: "if the sixth house gets strength, there will be more enemies and diseases and if the sixth house is weak there will be no diseases and no enemies". BPHS does not state the inversion as a rule; its nearest equivalents are particular verses (Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7; Ch. 24 Sl. 90).
Two things follow for a Moon in the 6th. The 6th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, so when that lord shares the 6th it is "with the Moon", one of the Venus sutras' enemy-destroying conditions. And for Aquarius rising the Moon is itself the 6th lord, in its own sign; by the commentator's inversion a strong 6th lord is the case that increases enemies, which reverses the usual value of a well-placed Moon. The texts do not reconcile the Moon's own verses with the 6th-lord inversion, and this page does not try.
How BPHS Ch. 17 reasons, and where the 6th lord goes
BPHS Ch. 17, the 6th-house chapter, has twenty-eight slokas, almost all about bodily harm with diseases and ages attached. This page does not reproduce those as predictions; three points of method stand out. The house is judged through its lord: Sl. 2 opens with where the 6th lord sits, not with what occupies the house. The sign of the 6th localises the result, which is why the same placement reads differently for different Ascendants. And the 6th is repeatedly paired with the 8th. For a Moon in the 6th the first point matters most: the planet Ch. 17 starts from is the lord of the Moon's sign.
| 6th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the verse says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 61 | Sickly, inimical to his own men, yet famous, rich, honourable, adventurous, virtuous |
| 2nd | Sl. 62 | Adventurous, famous among his people, living in alien countries, happy, a skilful speaker |
| 3rd | Sl. 63 | Given to anger, bereft of courage, inimical to all co-born, disobedient servants |
| 4th | Sl. 64 | Devoid of maternal happiness, intelligent, a tale bearer, jealous, evil-minded, very rich |
| 5th | Sl. 65 | Fluctuating finances, enmity with sons and friends; happy, selfish and kind |
| 6th | Sl. 66 | Enmity with their own kin, friendly to others; middling happiness in wealth |
| 7th | Sl. 67 | Deprived of happiness through wedlock; famous, virtuous, honourable, adventurous, wealthy |
| 8th | Sl. 68 | Sickly, inimical, desiring others' wealth and wives, impure |
| 9th | Sl. 69 | Trades in wood and stones; fluctuating professional fortunes |
| 10th | Sl. 70 | Well known, not respectful to his father, happy in foreign countries, a gifted speaker |
| 11th | Sl. 71 | Gains wealth through enemies; virtuous and adventurous; somewhat bereft of progenic happiness |
| 12th | Sl. 72 | Spends on vices, hostile to learned people, tortures living beings |
Six placements (1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th) include wealth, fame or honour alongside their difficulty, and three (3rd, 8th, 12th) are plainly harsh. Sl. 71 is the clearest statement of the Upachaya idea: the lord of enemies in the house of gains gains through enemies. With the Moon in the 6th, this table and the Bhrigu Sutras' inversion are both about the same planet, the lord of the Moon's sign.
Rising signs: dignity and lordship
Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 6th when it occupies the sixth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer only, so it rules one house in every chart, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 6th.
| Ascendant | Moon's sign | Natural dignity | Moon rules | BPHS Ch. 24, that lord in the 6th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 4th | Sl. 42: devoid of maternal happiness, given to anger, a thief and a conjurer, independent in action, indisposed |
| Taurus | Libra | Neutral (Venus) | 3rd | Sl. 30: at odds with siblings and the maternal uncle, dear to the maternal aunt, affluent |
| Gemini | Scorpio | Debilitated | 2nd | Sl. 18: with a benefic, wealth through enemies; with a malefic, loss through them and mutilation of the shanks |
| Cancer | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 1st | Sl. 6: if related to a malefic with no benefic aspect, little physical happiness and trouble from enemies |
| Leo | Capricorn | Neutral (Saturn) | 12th | Sl. 138: enmity with his own men, given to anger, sinful, miserable, goes to others' wives |
| Virgo | Aquarius | Neutral (Saturn) | 11th | Sl. 126: afflicted by diseases, cruel, living in foreign places, troubled by enemies |
| Libra | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 10th | Sl. 114: lacking paternal happiness; skilful yet short of wealth, troubled by enemies |
| Scorpio | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 9th | Sl. 102: meagre prosperity, little happiness from maternal relatives, troubled by enemies |
| Sagittarius | Taurus | Exalted | 8th | Sl. 90: wins over enemies; afflicted by diseases; in childhood, danger through snakes and water |
| Capricorn | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 7th | Sl. 78: a sickly wife, to whom he is inimical; given to anger, devoid of happiness |
| Aquarius | Cancer | Own | 6th | Sl. 66: enmity with their own kin but friendly to others; middling happiness in wealth |
| Pisces | Leo | Friendly (Sun) | 5th | Sl. 54: sons equal to his enemies, or loss of them, or an adopted or purchased son |
Ch. 24's lords-in-the-6th show the Dusthana at work: almost every lord placed there brings in enemies, illness or friction. Two rows carry their own conditions, which makes them the useful ones. Sl. 6 (Cancer rising, the Moon as Lagna lord) applies only if the lord is related to a malefic with no benefic aspect. Sl. 18 (Gemini rising, the Moon as 2nd lord) turns entirely on company: wealth through enemies with a benefic, loss with a malefic.
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 add a third verdict, the Moon's role for each Ascendant. For the rising signs that put the Moon in the 6th: auspicious for Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising (Lagna lord, 9th lord and Yoga Karaka, 5th lord); a Raj Yoga with Mercury for Libra rising; a malefic for Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising; a Maraka for Gemini rising (chief) and Leo rising (by association); not named for Aries or Sagittarius rising, with the 8th lordship excused for the latter. Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 also rank the Moon the least affected of the benefics by owning an angle. The three layers, the Moon's verses, Ch. 24 and Ch. 34, answer different questions and are not netted here.
Vipareeta yogas: three rising signs
This app's yogas calculator reports a Vipareeta Raja Yoga when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in any of those three houses. The Moon in the 6th forms one whenever it rules a Dusthana: Aquarius rising (6th lord, in Cancer: Harsha), Sagittarius rising (8th lord, exalted in Taurus: Sarala) and Leo rising (12th lord, in Capricorn: Vimala).
The sourcing matters: the engine's reference is Advanced Predictive Astrology, which uses the yoga in worked charts without a numbered definition, so the engine applies the standard rule. BPHS Ch. 24 reads the same placements differently: a mild Sl. 66 for Aquarius rising, the harsh Sl. 138 for Leo rising, and for Sagittarius rising Sl. 90, which opens "win over his enemies" and is one of BPHS's two nearest approaches to the inversion. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 also say the Moon's 8th lordship is not evil. The app shows the yoga and the testing line side by side.
BPHS has one classical yoga in which the 6th lord is a required, positive ingredient: Shankh Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 13-14), a strong Lagna lord with the 5th and 6th lords in mutual angles, read as wealth, spouse and children, a kindly intelligent nature and long life. For Aquarius rising the Moon is the 6th lord and so can be one of its two lords.
Why the app's line is always the testing one
The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when its dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. In the 6th the second condition always fails. The favourable string, "real resilience against rivals and obstacles when well supported", reflects the Bhrigu Sutras' escape clause and is never shown. Every Moon in the 6th gets "health strain, financial pressure and a house that needs deliberate care". The same rule holds in the 8th and 12th: the favourable line is never shown, whatever the sign.
The summary sentence still names the dignity when it is weak, so a debilitated Moon (Gemini rising) is described as weak and an exalted one (Sagittarius rising) by sign only. The dignity follows the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: for the Moon, the Sun and Mercury are natural friends and every other lord neutral, and the temporary half comes from the chart. In the 6th, the sign lord is the 6th lord.
The dasha panel agrees: dashaQuality() calls any planet in a Dusthana challenging, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6. The Moon Mahadasha page sets that out.
Strength, aspect and the karaka
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives the Moon full directional strength in the 4th and none in the 10th; the 6th is two houses past the peak, about two-thirds of the maximum in this engine's even steps. As an Apoklima the 6th gives a quarter of Kendradi Bal (Ch. 27 Sl. 5). The Shad Bala calculator shows both.
From the 6th the Moon aspects the 12th; aspectedHouses('moon', 6) returns [12]. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect. None of the three texts gives a verse for it. See the 12th house.
BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Mars the fixed significator of the 6th, so the house is read through its lord and Mars as well as its occupants. Ch. 17 Sl. 3-5 apply the 6th-house test to relatives through a planet-to-body list in which the Moon stands for the face; that list belongs to a relative's significator in a specific combination, not to a Moon simply sitting in the 6th. See Mars in the 6th house for the karaka.
Yogas counted from a Moon in the 6th
The lunar yogas of BPHS Ch. 37 count from wherever the Moon is. With the Moon in the 6th, the 2nd from it is your 7th house and the 12th from it your 5th, so Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura look there; Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon, which are your 11th, 12th and 1st; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in your 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th, or in an angle of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it. The engine detects Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura only from Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and Kemadruma only under its strictest reading.
BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 and Saravali's Dhana Yoga verse count benefics in the Upachayas, and both allow the count from the Moon. With the Moon as the reference point, the Upachayas from the Moon are your 8th, 11th, 3rd and 4th houses. The Moon itself is the starting point of that count, not one of the benefics in it. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 and Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 30 also grade the Moon by its house from the Sun, a kendra giving little, an apoklima much; the app does not score that rule.
Timing
The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 23-26 name this house: a waning Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th brings friction with the government, loss of wealth and distress to the mother, and a strong Moon in those houses brings troubles and good times by turns. That is the phase condition again, applied to the period. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
For Aquarius rising the Moon is the 6th lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 6th lord's dasha "danger from enemies and ill health"; this app's line is lower in temperature: "friction with rivals or health matters needing attention". Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make a 6th, 8th or 12th lord's dasha favourable when it is associated with a trine lord, and Ch. 42 Sl. 13 reads a planet associated with a Trika lord, without a trine lord's aspect, as harming finances in its dasha.
Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon; with the Moon in the 6th, "the 8th from your Moon" is your 1st house.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 10:00 IST on 13 January 1998 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Aquarius-rising case. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Aquarius 18.02 deg |
| Moon | Cancer 4.42 deg (Pushya), 6th house, Own sign; also the 6th lord |
| Mars (karaka), Venus | Capricorn, 12th house (Mars exalted; Venus retrograde and combust) |
| Jupiter, Ketu | Aquarius, 1st house |
| Saturn (Lagna lord) | Pisces 20.27 deg, 2nd house |
| Sun, Mercury | Sagittarius, 11th house |
| Moon ahead of the Sun | 185.47 deg |
| House line | Testing: phMoon6U, although the Moon is in its own sign |
| dashaQuality for the Moon | Challenging |
| Yoga reported for the Moon | Harsha (6th lord in a Dusthana) |
The house decides both engine grades. The Moon is in its own sign, near full (185 degrees: Krishna by paksha, inside Saravali's strongest band), and still gets the testing line and a challenging dasha grade, because the house is a Dusthana. The yogas list shows Harsha for the same Moon.
What the texts add. Ch. 24 Sl. 66, the 6th lord in the 6th: enmity with one's own kin, friendly to others, middling happiness in wealth. By the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator's inversion, an own-sign, near-full 6th lord is a strong 6th lord, the case that increases enemies; by the Moon's own sutras, a Moon that is not waning avoids the "fully malefic" reading, and no benefic shares the 6th to supply the escape clause. Mars, the karaka, is exalted in the 12th. The Moon's aspect falls on Mars and Venus in Capricorn. The page lists these and does not net them.
Two further counts from the same figures. The Sun is in Sagittarius and the Moon in Cancer, the 8th sign from the Sun, a panaphara, which BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 reads as a middling amount of wealth, learning and skill. The Moon at 4.42 degrees is in the first ten degrees of Cancer, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results at the start of the period; in this chart the engine's Vimshottari sequence begins with Saturn, so the Moon's own ten years come late. Saturn, the Lagna lord, is in the 2nd, and the engine reports an exchange between Jupiter and Saturn (Parivarthana).
Your own chart
- Confirm the Moon is in the sixth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Expect the testing line; read the Bhrigu Sutras' conditions yourself.
- Find the phase: the last third of the cycle is the "fully malefic" case.
- Look for a benefic sharing the 6th with the Moon (the escape clause).
- Find the house the Moon rules; if it is the 6th, 8th or 12th, check the yogas list for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala.
- Find the 6th lord (the lord of the Moon's sign) and Mars, and apply the inversion with care.
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.
What not to conclude
- "A Moon in the 6th means illness." Both verses name bodily complaints as a classical association; the Bhrigu Sutras give a strong constitution with a benefic. Not medical advice.
- "Saravali says it shortens life." Its verse conditions that on a weak Moon, and it is the text's statement, not a forecast; this app computes no lifespan.
- "A strong Moon is always better." In the 6th the Bhrigu Sutras' inversion reads a strong 6th lord as more enemies.
- "A Vipareeta yoga cancels the testing line." The app shows both; they come from different layers.
- "The app says testing, so the Moon is weak." The line is fixed by the house, not by the Moon's condition.
- "Benefics in the 6th are wasted, so they cannot help wealth." BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 and Saravali's Dhana Yoga still count benefics in the Upachayas; the texts leave the tension between the two views unresolved.
- "The 6th from my Moon in transit is my 6th house." Transits are counted from the Moon, natal houses from the Ascendant; with the Moon in the 6th, the 6th from the Moon is your 11th.
Questions about the Moon in the 6th
- Is the Moon in the 6th house bad?
- The Moon verses are harsh: Saravali names stomach diseases and a weak Moon being short-lived; the Bhrigu Sutras give poor and of diseased body, totally malefic when waning, with a strong constitution if a benefic joins. The 6th is hard on benefics in both books.
- Why does the app show the testing line even for an own-sign Moon?
- Its favourable line requires a house other than the 6th, 8th or 12th. In the 6th the testing line always prints.
- Does the phase matter here?
- Yes, in the texts: the Bhrigu Sutras make a waning Moon fully malefic in the 6th, and BPHS Ch. 47 makes a waning Moon in the 6th a difficult dasha. This app counts the Moon a benefic always.
- Does the Moon in the 6th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
- In this app, when the Moon rules a Dusthana: Aquarius rising (Harsha), Sagittarius rising (Sarala) and Leo rising (Vimala).
- What does the Moon aspect from the 6th?
- The 12th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it.
- Does it say anything about debts or employment?
- Not in the Moon verses. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list puts service, debts and litigation in the 6th; BPHS puts debts in the 10th.
- Does the Moon in the 6th affect the mind?
- BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 make the Moon the mind, but neither the Saravali nor the Bhrigu Sutras verse for the Moon in the 6th speaks of the mind; both speak of the body, means and condition. This page adds nothing they do not say.
- Is the Moon's dasha difficult?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 23-26 read a waning Moon in the 6th as friction with the government and losses, a strong one as troubles and good times off and on. This app grades any planet in a Dusthana as challenging.
