The 11th house is Labha Bhava, the house of gains, and for Ketu it is the house of near-agreement. The shared Bhrigu sutra, Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani all give Ketu here wealth or gains, and BPHS names the 11th twice among the good houses for a Ketu period. The agreement is not total: Chamatkar Chintamani ends its line by saying the native's issues will be unfortunate, and BPHS's own Ketu Dasha passage turns adverse when Ketu is aspected by a malefic. This app's row still prints its testing sentence for every Ketu in the 11th. That gap, between sources that lean clearly favourable and a coded rule that cannot see them, is the main thing to know about this placement.
This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 11th house, Labha Bhava and Rahu in the 5th house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.
A note on sources
Every classical line on this page was checked against the corpus text it is cited to: the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8, pp. 109-115), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) by chapter and sloka, Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are not in the corpus; their lines are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Ketu is the thinner node in these sources: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared set of sutras, Saravali's house chapter has no node lines, and the only house lines written for Ketu alone are Phaladeepika's and Chamatkar Chintamani's. An earlier version of this page worked from paraphrases; the corrections are noted where they matter.
The 11th house in brief
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 reads: "All articles, son's wife, income, prosperity, quadrupeds etc. are to be understood from Labh Bhava." Three of the five items are economic. Friends and elder siblings, the meanings most modern readers attach to the house, come from the modern commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, not from BPHS. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 116) puts the 11th among the upachayas, the growing houses, with the 3rd, 6th and 10th, and among the panaparas with the 2nd, 5th and 8th. It is not a trika house.
The 11th-house page sets out a tension inside BPHS itself. Ch. 47 lists the 11th among the good places for a planet's own Dasha, and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 put the Dashas of planets in the 3rd, 6th and 11th on the unfavourable list. Then a bracketed line exempts the nodes: "Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh." For Ketu, both chapters end up on the same side.
BPHS has little to say about Ketu's nature beyond placing it among the malefics (Ch. 3 Sl. 11) and describing it as "akin to Rahu" (Sl. 30). The Bhrigu Sutras (Part I, p. 13) add the common saying that Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu like Mars. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 83-84) gives a fuller sketch: Ketu "stands for hardships and isolation", and when well placed gives a spiritual, meditative influence and an inclination toward renunciation. Chatterjee (p. 25) calls Ketu "not conducive to material pleasures". Set against those descriptions, the 11th, the house of income, is an odd house for Ketu to read well in, and yet the house lines below are among the kindest any source gives the node.
What the texts say about Ketu in the 11th
The Bhrigu Sutras give the nodes one chapter, Part II Ch. 8. The translator's note at its head explains that the author gives the same effects for Rahu and Ketu in each house, presumably because they are always seventh from each other, while the other authorities give separate effects. So the sutra for the 11th covers Ketu and Rahu alike, word for word; only the lines printed under "Other Views" are Ketu's own.
| Source | Reading for the 11th house, as printed | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Bhrigu Sutras Part II Ch. 8, Sutras 29-30 (p. 114) | Blessed with children and wealthy | Either node |
| Phaladeepika, as quoted there (p. 114) | Will accumulate wealth, enjoy all kinds of comforts, and succeed in all undertakings | Ketu |
| Chamatkar Chintamani, as quoted there (p. 114) | All kinds of gains; fortunate, learned and well dressed; "His issues will be unfortunate" | Ketu |
On wealth and gains the three agree without a sign condition. On children they split. The shared sutra gives children, said of either node; Phaladeepika is silent on them; Chamatkar Chintamani says the native's issues, that is children, will be unfortunate. The earlier version of this page left that clause out and called the three unanimous. They are unanimous on gains and not on children. The line is reported here as what the text says, not as a forecast for anyone's family; this app makes no prediction about children from it.
For comparison, Ketu's own lines for the neighbouring good houses are more mixed. Phaladeepika gives Ketu in the 3rd wealth, power and reputation with loss of brothers, and Ketu in the 6th generosity, fame and authority; Chamatkar Chintamani gives Ketu in the 3rd great prosperity with no friends, and Ketu in the 6th cattle and health with loss of reputation through a maternal uncle. The 11th is the house where the two Ketu-only voices are both most clearly on the side of gains.
One rule still pulls against the placement, and it concerns the lord rather than Ketu. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give the Dasha of the 11th lord "obstacles in gains of wealth and the possibility of diseases". A lone Ketu in the 11th may act for that lord. The exception in Sl. 18-20 covers the node's placement; the texts do not say whether it carries to the lord the node stands for.
What Saravali and Chatterjee do not say
Saravali Ch. 30, Kalyana Varma's chapter on the planets in the houses, has no line for Rahu or Ketu in any house; the Bhrigu Sutras themselves note that Brihat Jataka and Saravali do not deal with the nodes in the houses. Saravali's Ch. 12 line on evils cancelled at birth, Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th aspected by benefics, names Rahu only. Chatterjee's aphorism 8 (p. 121), on material wealth from the 3rd, 6th or 11th, also names Rahu only. Neither is applied to Ketu here. Where the sources are silent on Ketu, this page is silent too.
Rahu in the 5th: the other half of this placement
Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 11th always has Rahu in the 5th. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and the engine follows that. Ketu's single aspect therefore falls on the 5th, on Rahu, so the axis joins the house of gains to the trine of children and learning. Because the Bhrigu Sutras use one set of sutras for both nodes, the sutra for Rahu in the 5th is the same text as the sutra for Ketu in the 5th; Rahu in the 5th house takes that side, and Ketu in the 5th house the reverse arrangement.
That shared sutra matters here. Sutras 11-13, for either node in the 5th, read children unfavourably and add windy diseases and trouble from the ruler, with a ritual this app does not prescribe. Phaladeepika's line for Rahu in the 5th, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, is also hard on children, while Chamatkar Chintamani's gives Rahu in the 5th a son and stomach ailments. So one chart, Ketu in the 11th with Rahu in the 5th, is described by a sutra that gives children (the 11th) and a sutra that withholds them (the 5th). The text does not reconcile the two. Read together with Chamatkar Chintamani's clause above, the children theme on this axis is contested inside the sources, and no single line settles it.
Counted the other way, a Ketu in the 11th is aspected by any planet sitting with Rahu in the 5th, and by the special aspects: Mars from the 4th or 8th house of the chart, Jupiter from the 3rd or 7th, and Saturn from the 2nd or 9th. This app also counts Rahu's own 7th aspect on Ketu, so Ketu in the 11th always shows Rahu among its aspecting planets. BPHS Ch. 26 does not name the nodes in its aspect rules at all, so whether that aspect counts classically is not settled by the text.
Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 11th
Ketu owns no sign in this app's tables, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give predominantly the effects of the bhava lord they join or of the bhava they occupy. The commentary closing the Bhrigu Sutras chapter (pp. 114-115) reports "a strong school of thought" that the nodes own no signs and sets an order: a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when it is neither joined nor aspected does it stand for the lord of its sign. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's rule 10 (p. 142) is close: the nodes give results by position, association and the rulers of the houses they occupy. In whole-sign houses the lord of Ketu's sign is the lord of the 11th itself, one of the three lords BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call evil; that passage ranks them in ascending order, which puts the 11th lord last and worst.
BPHS Ch. 22 judges gains entirely through that lord. Sl. 2 gives many gains with the 11th lord in the 11th, in a kendra or trikona, or exalted even when combust; Sl. 11 gives "no gains in spite of numerous efforts" when the lord is in fall, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th with a malefic. When Ketu stands for the 11th lord, those are the conditions to read.
Uttara Kalamrita, as the same commentary summarises it, adds three points. The first gives the nodes, "if endowed with strength", the effects of the planet owning the house they occupy or the planet they join, which again means the 11th lord. The second and third make the nodes auspicious in a kendra or trikona, with the lord of that kendra or trikona, or joined with any kendra or trikona lord. None names the 11th. What Uttara Kalamrita can add to an 11th-house Ketu is a conjunction with a kendra or trikona lord, which by its third point makes the node beneficial wherever it is.
Chatterjee has two modern working rules that use the same relationships. Aphorism 22 (p. 125) says nodes placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositors give very bad results; for Ketu in the 11th that happens when the 11th lord is in the 6th, 4th or 12th house of the chart. Aphorism 13 (p. 124) says a planet in close company with Rahu or Ketu gives poor results in its own Dasha, the closer the worse. Both are one author's rules, labelled as such.
The sign Ketu occupies, by rising sign
The dignity schemes for Ketu disagree. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 exalt Ketu in Scorpio, give Sagittarius as moolatrikona and Scorpio as own sign, with Pisces as own sign by "some sages". The Bhrigu Sutras (Part I, p. 13) report Uttara Kalamrita with Ketu exalted in Scorpio, debilitated in Taurus, owning Scorpio, moolatrikona in Virgo, and Sanketnidhi with Ketu exalted in Sagittarius and owning Pisces. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (pp. 82-83) makes Ketu lord of Aries, exalted in Scorpio and Sagittarius, and debilitated in Taurus and Gemini.
| Rising sign | Ketu in | Lord of that sign | Rahu in | What the texts attach to that sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Aquarius | Saturn | Leo | - |
| Taurus | Pisces | Jupiter | Virgo | Own sign (Sanketnidhi; "some sages" in BPHS) |
| Gemini | Aries | Mars | Libra | Own sign (JSS); holds Ashwini |
| Cancer | Taurus | Venus | Scorpio | Debilitated (Uttara Kalamrita, JSS) |
| Leo | Gemini | Mercury | Sagittarius | Debilitated (JSS) |
| Virgo | Cancer | Moon | Capricorn | - |
| Libra | Leo | Sun | Aquarius | Holds Magha |
| Scorpio | Virgo | Mercury | Pisces | Moolatrikona (Uttara Kalamrita) |
| Sagittarius | Libra | Venus | Aries | - |
| Capricorn | Scorpio | Mars | Taurus | Exalted and own (BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita); exalted (JSS) |
| Aquarius | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Gemini | Moolatrikona (BPHS); exalted (Sanketnidhi, JSS) |
| Pisces | Capricorn | Saturn | Cancer | - |
The table matters for one BPHS passage in particular. Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 open their favourable list with Ketu "in a Kendr, a Trikon, or in Labh, in a benefic Rāśi, in his exaltation, or in his own Rāśi". Read as a list of alternatives, the 11th alone qualifies; the sign then adds or removes nothing. Capricorn rising is the one case where every scheme except Sanketnidhi's agrees that an 11th-house Ketu is also exalted. Leo rising is the case where Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara alone calls it debilitated.
Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara also gives the nodes aspects on the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses from themselves, where this app, following BPHS Ch. 26, uses the 7th only. For an 11th-house Ketu that would add an aspect on the 1st house, the Lagna, and on the 8th. The same book (p. 118) makes Ketu the karaka for paternal relations. Neither changes what this app computes; both show where another standard text draws the chart differently.
Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods from the 11th
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71 introduces Ketu as the "headless trunk (Kabandha)" among the grahas, and Sl. 72-77 sort a Ketu period into groups. The 11th is in the first group, a kendra, trikona or the 11th, whose results the text gives as cordial relations with the ruler, headship of a country or village, conveyances, happiness from children and wife, gain from foreign countries and cattle. The 11th is also in the second group, the 3rd, 6th and 11th, for which the text gives "acquisition of a kingdom", good relations with friends and elephants; the earlier version of this page rendered that as a rise in position. The same passage splits the seven years into thirds, Raj Yoga at the start, fearfulness in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end. Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
The same passage closes with its adverse list: Ketu in the 2nd, 8th or 12th, "or receives a Drishti from a malefic", brings confinement, loss of kin and home, anxieties and disease. The 11th is not among those houses, but the malefic-aspect clause applies in any house. Any natural malefic that aspects an 11th-house Ketu, a Mars in the 4th or 8th or a Saturn in the 2nd or 9th, puts that clause in play beside the two favourable groups. The text does not say which wins when both apply. And if Rahu's 7th aspect is counted, as this app counts it, every Ketu in the 11th is aspected by a malefic; BPHS does not settle that question.
Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha's results by the lord's decanate and reverse the order for the always-retrograde nodes: a Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers early in its period, one in the first ten late. The general test of Sl. 5-6 (Lagna, exaltation, own or friendly sign favourable; the 6th, 8th or 12th, debility or an enemy's sign unfavourable) does not flag the 11th either way.
Ketu's sub-periods with the 11th named
The Antardasha chapters, Ch. 52 to 60, give conditions for Ketu's sub-period inside each Mahadasha. Some count Ketu's house from the Lagna, some from the Mahadasha lord, and the difference matters: a Ketu in the 11th from the Lagna is in the 11th from the Mahadasha lord only when that lord is in the Lagna. Several passages also prescribe charity or recitation for the bad cases; this app does not prescribe them, and they are left out.
| Mahadasha (BPHS chapter, slokas) | Condition naming the 11th | Counted from | What the text gives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Ch. 52 Sl. 62-64) | Ketu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th | Lagna | Happiness from family, more friends, renown, after a default reading of strain (Sl. 58-59) |
| Moon (Ch. 53 Sl. 49) | Ketu in a kendra, the 9th, 5th or 11th, with strength | Mahadasha lord | Gain of wealth and cattle; loss of wealth at the end |
| Mars (Ch. 54 Sl. 48-49) | Ketu in a kendra, trikona, the 3rd or 11th, or with benefic company or aspect | Lagna | Favour of the ruler, land (little at first, more later), a son, authority |
| Saturn (Ch. 57 Sl. 19) | Ketu in a kendra, trikona, the 3rd or 11th | Mahadasha lord | Strength, courage, audience with the ruler, enjoyments |
| Mercury (Ch. 58 Sl. 6-8) | Ketu in a kendra or the 11th | Mahadasha lord | Fitness, some wealth, success in learning, honours |
The other four chapters do not name the 11th for Ketu. In Rahu's Mahadasha (Ch. 55 Sl. 40-45) the good conditions are benefic company or aspect and a link to the Lagna lord; in Jupiter's (Ch. 56 Sl. 32-34) a benefic association gives only moderate gains; in Ketu's own (Ch. 59 Sl. 1-6) the good houses are kendras and trikonas, or a relation to the 9th, 10th or 4th lord; and in Venus's (Ch. 60 Sl. 67-68) the condition is exaltation, own sign, a Yoga Karaka, or positional strength, with the translator's bracket that "It is not laid down anywhere, in which Bhava Ketu does get positional strength". The Saturn chapter (Ch. 57 Sl. 16-18) also opens by calling Ketu's sub-period evil "even if" Ketu is exalted or in a kendra or trikona, before its 11th-house line.
Two patterns run through all nine chapters. The 2nd and 7th are the houses of physical distress for Ketu in nearly every one, and the 8th and 12th, from the Lagna or from the Mahadasha lord, are adverse. The 11th never appears on an adverse list. Where it appears at all, it is with the 3rd, the kendras or the trikonas among the good positions.
How this app reads Ketu in the 11th
Your Kundali row for Ketu turns favourable only for a planet exalted, in Moolatrikona, own or friendly sign, and outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 11th gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward gains that feel unsatisfying under real affliction". The favourable string for this house, "real contentment and gains that don’t depend on material accumulation - Ketu does well as a shadow planet in this upachaya house", is in the code but unreachable. Read the row as the house's theme under affliction, not a finding about your Ketu. Here too the unreachable string is the one closer to the texts, although the texts speak of accumulated wealth and comforts, not of gains that do not depend on accumulation.
The Mahadasha sentence uses the testing wording, "disconnection, unexpected loss and a pull toward isolation", and the three-level grade reads neutral. In the engine's grading, only a weak dignity or the 6th, 8th or 12th turn the grade to challenging, and only a strong dignity turns it good; Ketu never has either dignity, so from the 11th it is always neutral. The Ch. 48 bracket and the Ch. 47 groups that name the 11th are not coded.
A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, and with the rule it applies to natural malefics, Ketu included, transiting Ketu in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th or 11th sign from the Moon reads favourable. The Bhrigu Sutras give the nodes about 18 months in a sign, moving backward.
A worked chart
An illustrative birth, not a real person: 17 May 1988, 16:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), computed in this app's engine. Libra rises at 0.50 degrees. Ketu is at 26.20 degrees of Leo, in Purva Phalguni pada 4, in the 11th house; Rahu is in Aquarius in the 5th with Mars. The Sun, lord of Leo and so of the 11th, is at 3.06 Taurus in the 8th with the Moon (22.16, Rohini, exalted) and Mercury. Jupiter is in Aries in the 7th, combust; Venus is in Gemini in the 9th and Saturn, retrograde, in Sagittarius in the 3rd.
Nothing joins Ketu, but three planets aspect it in the engine: Mars and Rahu from the 5th by the 7th aspect, and Jupiter from the 7th by its 5th-house aspect. By the agent rule Ketu acts for an aspecting planet first. For Libra rising Mars rules the 2nd and 7th, and Jupiter the 3rd and 6th. Behind them, the 11th lord, the Sun, sits in the 8th.
Checked by hand against the sources. The house meets the shared sutra's and both Ketu-only lines' wealth readings, the Ch. 48 bracket, and both of Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77's favourable groups. Mars, a natural malefic, aspects Ketu, so the same passage's malefic-drishti clause is also met, and the text does not rank the two. Jupiter's aspect is a benefic one, which meets the Mars-Mahadasha sub-period condition (Ch. 54 Sl. 48-49) on its own. The Sun, Ketu's dispositor, is in the 8th: Ketu in Leo is 4th from it, so Chatterjee's aphorism 22 is not triggered, but by BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 11 a dispositor in the 8th with a malefic is the no-gains case. The Sun is a malefic itself and shares the 8th with the Moon and Mercury, so whether that sloka's "with a malefic" is met is a reading question. Leo carries no dignity in any scheme above. Mars at 3.19 Aquarius is 23 degrees from Rahu, not the close company of Chatterjee's aphorism 13.
The engine prints the row as "classically more testing, tending toward gains that feel unsatisfying under real affliction" and the Mahadasha as testing, graded neutral, where the sources quoted above read the placement and its period mostly favourably. The Moon in Rohini, a Moon nakshatra, puts Ketu's Mahadasha late, from 4 April 2066 to 4 April 2073, and Ketu in the last ten degrees of Leo puts its results at the start by the reversal of Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4. The Kaal Sarp check in this run is not present.
Checking a Ketu in the 11th in your own chart
- Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
- List any planet in the 11th with Ketu; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers. Failing that, list the planets aspecting it; failing both, read the lord of the 11th against BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2 and 11.
- Note whether any aspecting planet is a natural malefic (Mars, Saturn, the Sun); that is the adverse clause of Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77. Note any benefic aspect too.
- Look up Ketu's sign in the table above to see which dignity scheme, if any, marks it.
- Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the groups above, counting from the Mahadasha lord where the chapter says so, and the lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator, which has no row for Ketu itself.
- Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 5th house, compare Rahu in the 11th house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
- Is Ketu in the 11th house good?
- On gains, every source checked here reads it well: the shared Bhrigu sutra, Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani, and BPHS reads a Ketu period from the 11th favourably. Chamatkar Chintamani adds that the native's issues will be unfortunate, and BPHS Ch. 47 turns adverse when a malefic aspects Ketu. The lord Ketu acts for still matters.
- Why is the app's row for my 11th-house Ketu negative, then?
- Because the row's favourable sentence needs a strong dignity, which the engine never gives Ketu. The favourable string written for the 11th, about contentment and gains, exists in the code but no chart reaches it. Who joins and aspects your Ketu, which the texts treat as decisive, is something the row does not look at.
- Does the Bhrigu sutra for the 11th apply to Ketu or only to Rahu?
- To both. The Bhrigu Sutras give one set of sutras for either node in each house; only the Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines printed under them are separate for Ketu.
- Does Ketu in the 11th say anything about friends or elder siblings?
- Not in the lines checked here. Friends and elder siblings come from the modern list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, not from BPHS. The nearest classical line is BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77, which gives good relations with friends in a Ketu period from the 3rd, 6th or 11th.
- Does Saravali say anything about Ketu in the 11th?
- No. Its house chapter, Ch. 30, has no line for either node, and its Ch. 12 line on the 3rd, 6th and 11th names Rahu only.
- Is my Ketu in the 11th exalted or debilitated?
- The texts do not agree. BPHS Ch. 47 exalts Ketu in Scorpio; Uttara Kalamrita, as the Bhrigu Sutras report it, adds a fall in Taurus; Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara exalts it in Scorpio and Sagittarius and debilitates it in Taurus and Gemini; and a strong school gives the nodes no sign at all. This app follows the last and assigns Ketu no dignity.
- Is Ketu in the 11th part of the four-planet cluster in BPHS Ch. 21?
- No. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 11, cessation of duties, names Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars together in the 11th. Ketu is not in that list.
