The 11th is the house of gains, and no planet gets a bad verse there in Saravali (Ch. 30 Sl. 12-84). The Moon's is among the most generous: wealthy, many sons, long-lived, intelligent, valorous. The Bhrigu Sutras add wealth "without much effort", the phrase this app's favourable line echoes as "wealth that arrives with real ease". The condition sits in the same sutras: expenditure if the 11th lord is weak, gains if it is strong.
That condition is the thread of this page. It connects the Moon's verses to BPHS's chapter on the 11th, which is written entirely about the lord; to three of BPHS's seven Great Affluence yogas, which need the Moon in the 11th; and to the engine's dignity test, which turns on the same planet. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 11th house, Labha Bhava.
Sources, and money
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The texts describe gains in a court economy; this page reads them as the direction and ease of income, not amounts or dates. Nothing here is a financial forecast or financial advice.
The house of gains
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12: all articles, the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds. Friends and elder siblings come from the Bhrigu Sutras edition's modern significations list (p. 15), not from Parashara, and this page keeps the two layers apart. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-27) names the house Aya, income. It is a Panaphara and an Upachaya (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36), not a Dusthana, so this app never penalises a planet for sitting in it.
A point most summaries miss: BPHS treats the house and its lord differently. A planet sitting in the 11th is welcomed almost everywhere in the text, but Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say a planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, the 11th lord most of all. Ch. 22 asks whether income flows; Ch. 34 whether a planet's period is smooth.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 also ask for the 11th to be read three times: from the Ascendant, from the Sun and from the Moon. With the Moon in the 11th house, the 11th from the Moon is your 9th house, so BPHS's Moon-based reading of gains looks at the house of fortune.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 24
The verse (p. 102): the native "will be wealthy, will have many sons, be long-lived, will have attendants to serve, be intelligent, sharp, valorous and splendourous". Every clause is favourable, and none is conditioned on the Moon's phase. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 59 adds that a Moon in or related to the 11th brings gains "through females and through sales of elephants", small with a declining Moon and much greater with an increasing one, and Sl. 67 scales any such gain by dignity.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 61-69
The sutras (p. 43): the native will be highly learned, have sons and help others, and "at the age of 50 he will be father of many sons", with praiseworthy qualities. A weak 11th lord puts him to "lot of expenditure"; a strong one gives gains; and the Moon in the 11th lets him acquire wealth "without much effort". Joined with Venus, the Moon gives conveyances "pulled by men", high education, land, fortune and the role of protector. The commentator (pp. 43-44) sums up: unless the 11th lord is weak, the Moon here gives very auspicious results in wealth, land and children, provided no evil influence falls on her. In short, a planet in the 11th means wealth only if the 11th lord can deliver it. With the Moon in the 11th, the 11th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign.
The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator states the general rule for the house twice: under Mars (p. 60) the 11th "is an upachaya house where malefics give good results", and under Saturn (p. 107) all planets "prosper in the eleventh house unless they are lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th houses". The Moon rules one of those for three Ascendants: Aquarius (6th), Sagittarius (8th) and Leo (12th).
| Source | Reading | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 24 | Wealthy, many sons, long-lived, attendants, intelligent, sharp, valorous, splendid | None in the verse |
| Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 59 | Gains through women and trade | Larger with an increasing Moon |
| Bhrigu Sutras 61-69 | Learned, sons, helpful, wealth "without much effort" | Expenditure if the 11th lord is weak; gains if strong; conveyances with Venus |
| Bhrigu commentary | All planets prosper in the 11th | Unless they rule the 6th, 8th or 12th |
| Bhrigu Sutras, Jupiter 50-53 | Effortless gains | Jupiter in the 11th with the Moon |
| This app, phMoon11F | Steady gains and wealth that arrives with real ease | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly dignity |
| This app, phMoon11U | Financial strain, with effort not matching reward | Any other dignity |
BPHS Ch. 22: the lord does the work
Ch. 22 is eleven verses, and nearly every one is about the 11th lord. Sl. 2: the 11th lord in the 11th, in an angle or trine, or exalted "though in combustion", gives many gains. Sl. 11: "There will be no gains in spite of numerous efforts, if Labh's Lord is in fall, in combustion, or be in Ari, Randhr, or Vyaya Bhava with a malefic." Read precisely, Sl. 11 does not say there will be no effort; it says effort will not convert.
Set beside the Bhrigu Sutras' Moon line, the two texts agree. The Moon brings wealth "without much effort"; Ch. 22 says effort fails to convert when the lord is weak; the sutras say that same weak lord turns the Moon's gains into expenditure. All three point at the lord of the Moon's sign.
- Sl. 3: the 11th lord in the 2nd, with the 2nd lord in an angle with Jupiter: great gains.
- Sl. 5: the 11th lord joined with a benefic in an angle or trine.
- Sl. 8, 9, 10: exchanges of the 11th lord with the Lagna lord, the 2nd lord ("abundant fortunes after marriage") and the 3rd lord (wealth "through co-borns"). With the Moon in the 11th, the Moon sits in the 11th lord's sign, so an exchange needs that lord in Cancer.
The 2nd and the 11th: what comes in and what stays
BPHS reads wealth from two houses, and Ch. 13 keeps pairing them. Income is the 11th, what is held is the 2nd, and what leaves is the 12th. Ch. 13 Sl. 4: the 2nd lord in the 11th and the 11th lord in the 2nd, "wealth will be acquired", and the same if the two lords join in an angle or trine. Sl. 5: the 2nd lord in an angle with the 11th lord in a trine from it, or joined or aspected by Jupiter and Venus. Sl. 6-8 give the poverty combinations, each needing the 2nd and 11th lords both damaged and more besides.
For a Moon in the 11th that makes the 2nd lord the third planet to look at, after the Moon and the 11th lord. For Gemini rising the Moon is itself the 2nd lord, in Aries in the 11th, half of Ch. 13 Sl. 4's exchange; Mars, the 11th lord, would need to be in Cancer. The practical point: the texts rarely call a chart wealthy or poor on one house alone, and a strong 11th with a weak 2nd is money that arrives and does not stay.
Phase, and the Upachaya rule
Saravali's verse is unconditional, and the Bhrigu Sutras condition the Moon on the 11th lord rather than on its phase. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 still counts a waning Moon among the malefics, and the commentator's rule for this house is that malefics give good results here. So the 11th is one of the few houses where the texts' phase question does not turn the reading against the Moon, though Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 59 still makes the gains larger for an increasing Moon. The measure, by distance ahead of the Sun, has medium strength to 120 degrees, exceedingly strong from 120 to 240, very little from 240 to 360. A full Moon in the 11th puts the Sun in the 5th.
BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 48 forms a Raj Yoga with all benefics in the angles and malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. A waxing Moon in the 11th is not one of those malefics, and it is not in an angle either, so it does not help that verse. The Moon phase calculator gives your birth elongation; this app counts the Moon a benefic always.
Three Great Affluence yogas that need this Moon
BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8 list seven Great Affluence yogas, each with a planet in its own sign in the 5th and named planets in the 11th. The Moon is one of the planets required in the 11th in three of them.
| BPHS Ch. 41 | In its own sign in the 5th | Required in the 11th | Ascendants |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sl. 3 | Mercury | The Moon, Mars and Jupiter | Taurus, Aquarius |
| Sl. 4 | The Sun (in Leo) | Saturn, the Moon and Jupiter | Aries |
| Sl. 5 | Saturn | The Sun and the Moon | Virgo, Libra |
These are rare by construction, and this app's yoga engine reports them only when the full condition is met. From the 11th the Moon aspects the 5th, so in each of the three it looks straight at the planet in its own sign that the yoga needs. Ch. 41 Sl. 16-17 give the broader rule: the 9th and 5th lords, and planets joined with them, give wealth in their dashas, judged after weighing strength. The yogas calculator lists any that form, and what a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one.
BPHS Ch. 40 Sl. 12 gives gain "through royal association" when the 11th is occupied by its own lord, unaspected by a malefic, with an Atma Karaka condition; for Virgo rising the Moon is that lord at home. Ch. 40 Sl. 2 needs the 10th and 11th free of malefic occupation and aspect and the 11th aspected by its own lord. Saravali's Dhana Yoga verse counts benefics in the Upachayas from the Lagna or the Moon (Ch. 13 Sl. 32); the verse does not say whether the Moon counts among them when the count is from the Lagna, so this page does not count it.
Argala from the 11th
BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9 say a planet in the 4th, 2nd or 11th from any house or planet causes Argala, intervention, on it, and a planet in the 3rd from that point obstructs it. A Moon in the 11th house is in the 11th from the Ascendant, so it casts Argala on the Lagna, obstructed by any planet in your 3rd. Sl. 11-17 say an unobstructed Argala with Drishti on the 11th denotes "gains", and Ch. 29 Sl. 22 read the sources of gain from the 11th counted from the Lagna Pada. The Argala calculator and the Arudha Lagna calculator compute both.
Rising signs: dignity and lordship
Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 11th when it occupies the eleventh sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer only, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 11th; almost every lord gains something there.
| Ascendant | Moon's sign | Natural dignity | Moon rules | BPHS Ch. 24, that lord in the 11th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Aquarius | Neutral (Saturn) | 4th | Sl. 47: fear of secret disease; liberal, virtuous, charitable, helpful to others |
| Taurus | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 3rd | Sl. 35: gain in trading; intelligent though not literate; adventurous |
| Gemini | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 2nd | Sl. 23: all kinds of wealth; diligent, honourable, famous |
| Cancer | Taurus | Exalted | 1st | Sl. 11: always endowed with gains, good qualities, fame and many wives |
| Leo | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 12th | Sl. 143: losses; brought up by others; "will sometimes gain through others" |
| Virgo | Cancer | Own | 11th | Sl. 131: gain in all undertakings; learning and happiness increase "day by day" |
| Libra | Leo | Friendly (Sun) | 10th | Sl. 119: wealth, happiness and children; virtuous, truthful, "always delighted" |
| Scorpio | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 9th | Sl. 107: financial gains "day by day"; devoted to elders, meritorious |
| Sagittarius | Libra | Neutral (Venus) | 8th | Sl. 95: with a malefic, unhappy early and happy later; with a benefic, long-lived |
| Capricorn | Scorpio | Debilitated | 7th | Sl. 83: wealth through the spouse; less happiness from sons |
| Aquarius | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 6th | Sl. 71: wealth through enemies; virtuous, adventurous |
| Pisces | Capricorn | Neutral (Saturn) | 5th | Sl. 59: learned, dear to people, an author, very skilful, with children and wealth |
Only the 12th lord (Leo rising) brings plain loss into the house of gain, and the 8th lord (Sagittarius rising) depends on its company; even the 6th lord gains, through enemies. Two rows put the Moon's best dignity and its lordship together: Cancer rising gives an exalted Lagna lord in the 11th, Sl. 11 and Ch. 34's "auspicious"; Virgo rising gives the 11th lord in its own sign in the 11th, Sl. 131 and Ch. 22 Sl. 2, with Ch. 34 Sl. 31-32 calling the Moon a malefic for Virgo rising, in line with Sl. 2-7's rule on 11th lordship.
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44, the per-Ascendant roles, add a third layer. For the rising signs that put the Moon in the 11th: auspicious for Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising; a Raj Yoga with Mercury for Libra rising; a malefic for Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising; a Maraka for Gemini (the chief one) and Leo (by association); not named for Aries or Sagittarius rising, with the 8th lordship excused for the latter by Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator and Ch. 34 therefore agree on Leo rising and part company on Sagittarius.
The 11th lord, through the houses
Since the Bhrigu Sutras make the 11th lord the deciding factor, BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 121-132 are the second table to read. Nine of the twelve are favourable, the 6th and 8th the difficult ones, and the 12th mixed.
| 11th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the verse says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 121 | Genuine, rich, happy, even-sighted, a poet, eloquent, "always endowed with gains" |
| 2nd | Sl. 122 | All kinds of wealth and accomplishments; charitable |
| 3rd | Sl. 123 | Skilful in all jobs, wealthy, fraternal bliss; may sometimes incur gout pains |
| 4th | Sl. 124 | Gain from maternal relatives, happiness of house and lands |
| 5th | Sl. 125 | Happy, educated, virtuous, religious |
| 6th | Sl. 126 | Afflicted by diseases, cruel, living in foreign places, troubled by enemies |
| 7th | Sl. 127 | Gain through the wife's relatives; liberal, virtuous, sensuous; at the spouse's command |
| 8th | Sl. 128 | Reversals in undertakings; long life, while his wife predeceases him |
| 9th | Sl. 129 | Fortunate, skilful, truthful, honoured by the king, affluent |
| 10th | Sl. 130 | Honoured by the king, virtuous, intelligent, truthful |
| 11th | Sl. 131 | Gain in all undertakings; learning and happiness increase "day by day" |
| 12th | Sl. 132 | Depends on good deeds; sensuous; many wives; befriends barbarians |
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Moon's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 11th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides.
Outside Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio the Moon's dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: the Sun and Mercury natural friends, every other lord neutral, and the temporary half from the chart (the lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Moon is a temporary friend). In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, and in the 11th the sign lord is the 11th lord, so the engine, like the Bhrigu Sutras, ends up asking about that one planet:
- Always favourable: Cancer rising (Moon exalted) and Virgo rising (Moon in Cancer).
- Never favourable: Capricorn rising (Moon debilitated).
- For the other nine: favourable when the 11th lord sits in a temporary-friend position from the Moon; otherwise Neutral (Leo, Libra, Scorpio rising) or Enemy sign (the other six).
dashaQuality() is stricter: good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign; challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana; neutral otherwise. The Moon Mahadasha page sets that out.
Strength, the aspect on the 5th, and lunar yogas
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives the Moon no directional strength in the 10th; the 11th is one house past it, about one-sixth of the maximum in this engine's even steps. As a Panaphara, the 11th gives half of Kendradi Bal. The Shad Bala calculator shows both.
From the 11th the Moon aspects the 5th; aspectedHouses('moon', 11) returns [5]. The 11th-5th opposition may explain why two Ch. 24 verses trade income against children. The engine counts the Moon's aspect as benefic; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it. See the 5th house. For the lunar yogas, the 2nd and 12th from a Moon in the 11th are your 12th and 10th houses; Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in your 4th, 5th and 6th; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in your 2nd, 5th, 8th or 11th, or in an angle of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it.
Timing, and a contradiction inside BPHS
The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 16-22 list a Moon in the 11th, 9th or 5th among the conditions for a prosperous Moon dasha. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 say the dashas of planets placed in the 3rd, 6th and 11th "will prove unfavourable", Rahu and Ketu excepted. The text does not reconcile the two, and Ch. 48 ends with its own method: judge the dasha after weighing placement and relationships. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
For Virgo rising the Moon is the 11th lord, and Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give that dasha "obstacles in gains of wealth and the possibility of diseases"; this app's theme is "gains that come with some obstacles, and health matters worth watching". Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon; with the Moon in the 11th, the 11th from the Moon is your 9th.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 00:00 IST on 3 January 2010 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Virgo-rising case. A run twenty-four hours earlier placed the Moon at 0.84 degrees of Cancer, so the later date keeps it clear of the sign boundary. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Virgo 12.17 deg |
| Moon | Cancer 15.91 deg (Pushya), 11th house, Own sign; also the 11th lord |
| Mars | Cancer 24.53 deg, retrograde, 11th house, Debilitated |
| Saturn | Virgo 10.43 deg, 1st house |
| Sun, Mercury (Lagna lord), Venus, Rahu | Sagittarius, 4th house |
| Jupiter | Aquarius 2.76 deg, 6th house |
| Ketu | Gemini, 10th house |
| Moon ahead of the Sun | 207.64 deg |
| House line | Favourable: phMoon11F |
| dashaQuality for the Moon | Good |
The Moon is the 11th lord in its own sign in the 11th, which settles the Bhrigu Sutras' condition (a strong 11th lord: gains), BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2 (the 11th lord in the 11th: many gains) and Ch. 24 Sl. 131. It is 208 degrees ahead of the Sun, waning by paksha and in Saravali's strongest band. The engine gives the favourable line and a "good" dasha grade.
The complications. Mars, debilitated and retrograde, shares the 11th with the Moon; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentary says malefics give good results in the 11th, while Ch. 40 Sl. 12's royal-association rule needs the 11th's own lord there unaspected by a malefic, which is a different condition from a malefic sharing the house. Ch. 41 Sl. 5 (Saturn in its own sign in the 5th with the Sun and Moon in the 11th) is not met: Saturn is in the Lagna and the Sun in the 4th. The Moon's aspect falls on Capricorn, the 5th, which is empty. The page lists these and does not net them.
Three further counts from the same figures. The 11th from the Moon, which BPHS Ch. 7 asks to be read for gains, is Taurus, your 9th, which is empty. The Sun is in Sagittarius and the Moon in Cancer, the 8th from the Sun, a panaphara, which BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 reads as a middling amount of wealth, learning and skill. And the Moon at 15.91 degrees is in the middle ten degrees of Cancer, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results in the middle of the period; the engine's Vimshottari sequence here begins with Saturn.
Your own chart
- Confirm the Moon is in the eleventh sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Find the 11th lord (the lord of the Moon's sign): strong, or in fall, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th with a malefic (Ch. 22 Sl. 11)?
- Does the Moon rule the 6th, 8th or 12th? Then the commentator's exception applies.
- Check the 5th for a planet in its own sign, and the 11th for the other planets Ch. 41 Sl. 3-5 require.
- Read the 11th from the Moon, your 9th house, as BPHS Ch. 7 asks.
- Look at the 2nd house too; the career and money feature weights the 2nd and 11th highest.
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.
Readings to be careful with
- "A Moon in the 11th means easy money." The Bhrigu Sutras say so only with a strong 11th lord; with a weak one, expenditure.
- "The 11th lord is always good for you." BPHS Ch. 34 counts 11th lordship among the evil ones.
- "The Moon's dasha will be good because it is in the 11th." Ch. 47 says so; Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 say the reverse.
- "The 11th is the house of friends." That is the modern commentary; BPHS lists income and prosperity.
- "A Great Affluence yoga forms whenever the Moon is in the 11th." Each of the three needs a specific Ascendant and a planet in its own sign in the 5th as well.
- "The 11th from my Moon in transit is my 11th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.
Questions about the Moon in the 11th
- Is the Moon in the 11th house good?
- Both Moon verses are favourable: Saravali gives wealth, sons, long life and intelligence; the Bhrigu Sutras give learning and wealth "without much effort", provided the 11th lord is strong.
- What does the 11th lord have to do with it?
- The Bhrigu Sutras make it the condition: gains if it is strong, expenditure if it is weak. BPHS Ch. 22 judges the whole house by it. With the Moon in the 11th it is the lord of the Moon's sign.
- Which yogas need the Moon in the 11th?
- Three of BPHS Ch. 41's seven Great Affluence yogas: Sl. 3 (Taurus, Aquarius rising), Sl. 4 (Aries rising) and Sl. 5 (Virgo, Libra rising), each with other planets required.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Moon in the 11th?
- Cancer rising (exalted Lagna lord) and Virgo rising (11th lord in its own sign). Ch. 34 calls the Moon auspicious for the first and a malefic for the second.
- What does the Moon aspect from the 11th?
- The 5th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; in the Ch. 41 yogas it falls on the planet in its own sign in the 5th.
- Is the Moon's dasha favourable with this placement?
- BPHS gives both answers (Ch. 47 yes, Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 no) and asks for placement and relationships to be weighed. This app grades the dasha by dignity and house only.
- Does a malefic beside the Moon in the 11th spoil it?
- The Bhrigu Sutras' commentary says malefics give good results in the 11th, and Saravali's individual verses for Mars and Saturn there are favourable. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 11 reads Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars all together in the 11th as a cessation of duties, which needs all four.
- Why read the 2nd house as well?
- BPHS pairs the 2nd and 11th throughout Ch. 13: income is the 11th, what is held is the 2nd. The poverty verses need both lords damaged.
- Does it say anything about elder siblings or friends?
- Not in the Moon verses. Those meanings come from the Bhrigu Sutras edition's modern significations list, not from BPHS Ch. 11.
