Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Moon in the 12th house: Saravali's verse, the Bhrigu Sutras' readings and their benefic condition, BPHS Ch. 23's clause for the Moon as 12th lord, the Vimala Yoga dispute for Leo rising, and why this app always prints the testing line here.

Saravali's 12th-house verse (Ch. 30 Sl. 25) is its harshest Moon line: moral fall, eye diseases, indolence, being insulted. The 12th is the house of expenditure, the twelfth from the 1st, which the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator reads as the end. Yet the same body of texts gives the Moon here more exits than most planets get: a benefic beside it, the sign Cancer, and, in BPHS, a clause that names the Moon as 12th lord and promises houses, beds and learning.

This page sets out the verses, the conditions on them, what each rising sign changes, and why the app's line here is always the testing one. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 12th house, Vyaya Bhava; for the Moon one house on, in the Lagna, the Moon in the 1st.

Sources, and what is left out

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Harsh, bodily and afterlife lines are reported as the texts' statements, not forecasts. Eye associations are reported as the texts give them and are not a diagnosis. Nothing here is a statement about your finances, character or what follows death.

The house of expenditure

BPHS defines the 12th in half a sloka, Ch. 11 Sl. 13: expenses, the history of enemies, and one's own death. Saravali gives it a single name, Vyaya (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-27). Foreign lands, sleep and spirituality are not in Parashara's definition; bed comforts, travel and emancipation come from particular combinations in Ch. 23, and the long modern list from the Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (p. 16), which points readers to Uttara Kalamrita. Advanced Predictive Astrology sums up a "lower octave" of food, bed and comforts and a "higher octave" of moksha, and adds that the house is best left unoccupied (Vol. II pp. 71-72).

The 12th is a Dusthana and an Apoklima (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37: association with the Trikas "will inflict evils". As an Apoklima it gives a quarter of Kendradi Bal (Ch. 27 Sl. 5), the lowest of the three classes.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 25

The verse (p. 102): the native "will be odious, fallen in moral sense, mean, will suffer eye diseases, be indolent, distressed (deformed), is born of others loins and will be insulted at all times". It is the harshest of Saravali's twelve Moon-in-house lines and carries no condition. The parentage clause is one this site does not apply anywhere; it is named only because it is in the verse. The eye recurs in this house: the Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list gives the 12th the left eye, and Saravali's Mars and Saturn in the 12th (Sl. 37, 85) also name eye trouble. That is a classical body association, reported as the texts give it, not a diagnosis.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 70-71

The sutras (p. 45): the native "will be deprived of good food, will incur wasteful expenditure, will be of angry nature", will earn money by questionable means, will suffer diseases from contact with women, and will have no grains. With a benefic, he will be learned, kind-hearted and have good friends, and the sutra adds he "will go to heaven after death"; with a malefic, "the native will go to hell". These are the text's statements, not forecasts or medical advice. The commentator (p. 45) says most of the ill effects "will be warded off if she is in her own sign Cancer without any malefic influence", and his note (pp. 45-46) explains Chamatkar Chintamani's money "spent on good causes" as the case of benefic influence on the Moon and the 12th. So there are two exits: a benefic's company and the sign Cancer.

BPHS Ch. 23 and the Moon

Ch. 23 has fourteen slokas, and its subject is what you spend on and whether you stay or wander. Its first group of verses names the Moon.

  • Sl. 1-4: expenses on good accounts if the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own house or exalted, or if a benefic occupies the 12th. A waxing Moon in the 12th is that benefic occupant.
  • The same verses: when the Moon is the 12th lord and is exalted, in its own sign or Navamsa, or in the 11th, 9th or 5th, the text promises beautiful houses and beds, scented articles, rich clothes and learning. The Moon is the 12th lord only for Leo rising, and for Leo rising the Moon in the 12th is in Cancer, its own sign, which meets the clause.
  • Sl. 5-6: a 12th lord in the 6th or 8th, or in an enemy's or debilitation Navamsa, troubled by expenses; in an angle or trine, a spouse obtained.
  • Sl. 11-12: wandering from country to country if the 12th lord and the 12th are with malefics and the lord exchanges aspects with malefics; with benefics in the same positions, one "will move in his own country".

So BPHS reads a benefic Moon in the 12th mainly by the quality of spending, which is what the chapter measures, and Saravali reads it by the native's condition. The Bhrigu Sutras sit between them: wasteful spending, reversed by a benefic's company. Ch. 23 Sl. 9-10, the afterlife pair, include a benefic in the 12th among the conditions of one of them ("final emancipation"); they are named here and not applied.

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2 pair the houses on either side of the Lagna: benefics in both the 12th and the 2nd form Subh Yog, read as eloquent, charming and virtuous; malefics in both form Asubh Yog. A benefic Moon in the 12th is half of Subh Yog, which forms if a benefic also occupies your 2nd. See the 2nd house.

Three further Ch. 23 verses complete the chapter. Sl. 7 is a method note: the same deductions are made for relatives from their own houses, the 3rd for siblings and so on. Sl. 8: planets in the visible half of the zodiac give explicit results, those in the invisible half secret ones. Sl. 13-14: earnings "through sinful measures" if "Śani, or Mangal etc." occupy the 12th without a benefic's aspect, and expenses on religious grounds if the Lagna lord is in the 12th while the 12th lord is in the Lagna with Venus. For Cancer rising the Moon is the Lagna lord in the 12th, so Sl. 14 needs Mercury, the 12th lord, in Cancer with Venus.

BPHS Ch. 42, the chapter on penury, uses the 12th repeatedly in its first fifteen slokas. Two touch the Moon through lordship. Sl. 2 has the Lagna lord in the 12th and the 12th lord in the Lagna, joined or aspected by a Maraka lord, which for Cancer rising starts from the same exchange as Ch. 23 Sl. 14 and ends somewhere else. Sl. 13 turns the idea into timing: a planet associated with a Trika lord, without a trine lord's aspect, harms finances in its dasha. BPHS Ch. 30 builds the Upa Pad on "the Bhava following the natal Lagn", which this app reads as the 12th for an odd rising sign; for Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius rising, the Moon in the 12th sits in the house the Upa Pad is counted from.

Phase: when the Moon is the benefic of these verses

Every favourable rule above needs the Moon to count as a benefic, and BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts a decreasing Moon among the malefics. The texts measure it by the Moon's distance ahead of the Sun: medium to 120 degrees, very auspicious from 120 to 240, without strength from 240 to 360 (a translator's note to BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17), with a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turning benefic.

A Moon in the 12th house is often close to the Sun when the Sun is in the 1st or 12th, which is the last band of the cycle or the first days of the next, and a Moon within 12 degrees of the Sun is marked combust by this engine, with its Shad Bala position score set to zero. Whether a given Moon in the 12th is a benefic in the texts' sense is therefore worth checking with the Moon phase calculator. The engine counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase.

Rising signs: dignity and lordship

Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 12th when it occupies the sign before your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer only, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 12th; nearly every row carries the same idea: the matters of the house whose lord has moved here are spent.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart (natural relation only); lordship from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1773-2085); harsh clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts.

Two rows are softer: the Lagna lord's verse carries its own escape clause (only without benefic aspect or company), and the 9th lord spends on auspicious acts and hospitality, which is loss of money but not of character. Cancer rising is the first: the Moon, as Lagna lord in the 12th, is itself a benefic, but Sl. 12 asks about benefic aspect or company on it from other planets.

Leo rising: three readings of one Moon

For Leo rising the Moon is the 12th lord in Cancer, its own sign, in the 12th. Three readings meet and disagree. Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 give a 12th lord in its own house spending on good accounts, and their Moon clause promises houses, beds, scented articles and learning; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator says most ill effects are warded off in Cancer; this app's yogas calculator reports Vimala Yoga, the 12th lord in a Dusthana. Ch. 24 Sl. 144 reads the 12th lord in the 12th as only heavy expenditure.

The sourcing of Vimala matters: under Jupiter in the 12th (p. 86) the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator quotes Uttara Kalamrita for the Vipareeta rule, in which the 12th lord qualifies in the 8th or 6th or when the three Trika lords are connected; the 12th lord in the 12th is his own extension "on the analogy of the above principles". Sl. 144 and Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 measure different things, the quantity of expense and its quality. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 call the Moon a killer for Leo rising, giving effects according to its associations.

Two other rising signs give the app's other Vipareeta yogas: Aquarius rising (the Moon as 6th lord in Capricorn: Harsha) and Sagittarius rising (the Moon as 8th lord, debilitated in Scorpio: Sarala). For Sagittarius rising, BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 build Raj Yogas from fallen 6th, 8th and 12th lords with a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna; a debilitated 8th lord is the right kind of planet, though Sl. 28 also needs it to aspect the Lagna, which a Moon in the 12th does not.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44, the per-Ascendant roles, give the third layer. For the rising signs that put the Moon in the 12th: auspicious for Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising; a Raj Yoga with Mercury for Libra rising; a malefic for Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising; a Maraka for Gemini (the chief one) and Leo (by association); not named for Aries or Sagittarius rising, with the 8th lordship excused for the latter by Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 also refuse to classify the 12th lord on its own: its effects "will depend on their association". The Moon has no other house, so for Leo rising the Moon depends entirely on the company it keeps.

The 12th lord, through the houses

With the Moon in your 12th, the 12th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 make that lord's results depend on its association and its other house. Ch. 24 Sl. 133-144 read it through the houses; the one clear exception is the 8th, where a Dusthana lord in another Dusthana gains.

12th lord inBPHS Ch. 24What the verse says

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 133-144 (bphs.txt 2021-2051), every clause kept.

Why the app's line is always the testing one

The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when its dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. In the 12th the second condition always fails. The favourable string, "learning, kindness and real generosity, when well supported", follows the Bhrigu Sutras' benefic clause and is never shown. Every Moon in the 12th gets "overspending and restlessness that call for real discipline". The same rule holds for every planet in the 12th.

For Leo rising, then, the app shows the testing line in the house card and Vimala Yoga in the yogas list for the same Moon. The summary sentence names the Moon's dignity only when it is weak (a debilitated Moon for Sagittarius rising), so an own-sign or exalted Moon (Leo, Gemini rising) is described by sign. The dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: for the Moon the Sun and Mercury are natural friends and every other lord neutral, and the temporary half comes from the chart.

dashaQuality() calls any planet in a Dusthana challenging, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6. The Moon Mahadasha page sets out both engine tests.

Strength, the aspect on the 6th, and lunar yogas

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives the Moon no directional strength in the 10th and full strength in the 4th; the 12th is two houses past the zero point, about one-third of the maximum in this engine's even steps, and the Apoklima gives a quarter of Kendradi Bal. The Shad Bala calculator shows both.

From the 12th the Moon aspects the 6th; aspectedHouses('moon', 12) returns [6]. Both are Dusthanas, and BPHS pairs them in its long-life verses (Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7). The engine counts the Moon's aspect as benefic; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it. See the 6th house.

Two things are easily confused here. Anapha Yoga is a planet in the 12th sign from the Moon, counted from wherever the Moon is; it says nothing about a Moon in the 12th house. With the Moon in the 12th, the 2nd and 12th from it are your 1st and 11th houses, so Sunapha forms with a planet other than the Sun in your Lagna and Anapha with one in your 11th; Adhi Yoga looks at your 5th, 6th and 7th; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in your 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th, or in an angle of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it.

Timing

The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 23-26 name this house: a waning Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th brings friction with the government, loss of wealth and distress to the mother; a strong Moon there, troubles and good times by turns. Ch. 48 adds that a planet in the 6th, 8th or 12th at the start of its dasha yields adverse results, and asks for both the birth and the starting position to be considered; this app applies the natal half. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.

For Leo rising the Moon is the 12th lord, and Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give that dasha "distress and danger from diseases"; this app's line is "expenses, distress or health matters needing attention". Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make a 6th, 8th or 12th lord's dasha favourable when it is associated with a trine lord. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon; Sade Sati, Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, is a different twelfth from your 12th house.

The house fixes both engine grades, and the yogas list adds Vimala. By the texts: the Moon is 196 degrees ahead of the Sun, inside Saravali's strongest band, so it is a benefic for Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 and the Bhrigu Sutras' Cancer clause applies. Ch. 23's Moon-as-12th-lord clause (own sign) is met. Ch. 24 Sl. 144 still reads heavy expenditure.

Mars in the Lagna, the 2nd from the Moon, forms Sunapha; Jupiter in Aries is the 10th from the Moon, but no benefic joins it or aspects it from Libra, so Gaj Kesari does not form. Subh Yog is not formed: the 2nd, Virgo, is empty. The Moon's aspect falls on Capricorn, the 6th, which is empty. For Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12 the 12th holds only the Moon, a benefic, and the 12th lord is that same Moon. The Moon at 12.03 degrees is in the middle third of Cancer, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results in the middle of the period; the engine's Vimshottari sequence here begins with Saturn. The page lists these and does not net them.

One count the engine does not make: the Sun is in Sagittarius and the Moon in Cancer, the 8th from the Sun, a panaphara, which BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 and Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 30 read as a middling amount of wealth, learning and skill. On the daily scale, when the transiting Moon passes through your 6th, 8th or 12th house, this app's daily guidance suggests holding major commitments; that is the transiting Moon, not the natal one.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm the Moon is in the sign before your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Expect the testing line; read the conditions in the texts yourself.
  3. Find the phase, and whether the Moon is combust: the favourable rules need it to count as a benefic.
  4. Look for a benefic sharing the 12th (the Bhrigu Sutras' clause) and for a benefic in the 2nd (Subh Yog).
  5. Find the house the Moon rules; if it is the 6th, 8th or 12th, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala in the yogas list.
  6. For the 12th's Arudha (the Vyaya Pad), use the Bhava Padas calculator.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

Readings that outrun the texts

  • "A Moon in the 12th means eye disease." It is a classical body association, reported as such; nothing here is a diagnosis.
  • "It means living abroad." Parashara's definition does not mention foreign lands; Ch. 23 Sl. 12 keeps a person in their own country when benefics are involved.
  • "Vimala Yoga makes it good." For Leo rising, Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4, Ch. 24 Sl. 144 and the yoga point different ways; the app shows the yoga and the testing line.
  • "Anapha is the Moon in the 12th." Anapha is a planet in the 12th from the Moon.
  • "The app says testing, so the Moon is weak." The line is fixed by the house; an own-sign or exalted Moon receives it too.
  • "The 12th from my Moon in transit is my 12th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about the Moon in the 12th

Is the Moon in the 12th house bad?
Saravali's verse is the harshest of its Moon lines; the Bhrigu Sutras give wasteful expenditure, an angry nature and questionable earnings, reversed with a benefic's company, and their commentator says Cancer, free of malefic influence, wards off most of it. BPHS reads a benefic in the 12th as spending on good accounts.
Which rising sign gives the best Moon in the 12th?
Leo rising, where the Moon is the 12th lord in Cancer: Ch. 23's Moon clause, the commentator's Cancer exception and the app's Vimala Yoga all apply, though Ch. 24 Sl. 144 reads heavy expenditure.
Why does the app always show the testing line?
Its favourable line requires a house other than the 6th, 8th or 12th, so in the 12th the testing line always prints.
What does the Moon aspect from the 12th?
The 6th house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; no separate result is stated.
Does the phase matter here?
Yes, in the texts: the favourable rules need the Moon to count as a benefic, and BPHS Ch. 47 reads a waning Moon in the 12th as friction and losses in its dasha. This app counts the Moon a benefic always.
Does the Moon in the 12th say anything about sleep or spirituality?
Not in the Moon verses. Bed comforts and emancipation appear in BPHS Ch. 23 as results of particular combinations, and the long modern list of 12th-house meanings comes from the Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list, which itself points to Uttara Kalamrita.
What is Subh Yog?
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2: benefics in both the 12th and the 2nd, read as eloquent, charming and virtuous. A benefic Moon in the 12th is half of it.
Is the Moon's dasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 48 says planets in the 12th give adverse dasha results, and Ch. 47 reads a strong Moon there as troubles and good times by turns. This app grades it challenging.
