Jupiter in the 1st house is the one planet-in-house placement BPHS names outright as a protection. Ch. 10 Sl. 3 says a single, but strong Jupiter in the Lagna will ward off all the evils listed before it. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls the 1st "the most ideal position for Jupiter", because there it has directional strength and casts all three of its aspects onto the houses of children, partnership and fortune. Saravali reads Jupiter rising as attractive, energetic, long-lived, learned, courageous and great, one who acts after assessing consequences.

BPHS's word is "strong", and the conditions on Jupiter's strength, its sign, its lordship and the Sun beside it, are the subject of this page. It also sets out what Jupiter owns from each rising sign and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 1st house, Tanu Bhava.

Sources, and the body

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. Appearance and health phrases are the texts' and are not medical advice.

Why the texts single out this placement

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2 reads physique, appearance, intellect, vigour, happiness, grief and innate nature from the Lagna. Jupiter "confers Knowledge and happiness" in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13. Three separate BPHS passages then single out a benefic, or Jupiter by name, in or around the Lagna:

  • Ch. 10 Sl. 2-3: Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle from the Lagna destroys the evils of the preceding chapter, and "a single, but strong Guru in Lagn will ward off all the evils". Sl. 4 says the Lagna lord alone can do the same if strongly placed in an angle.
  • Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7: the Lagna lord, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle or trine makes one long lived, wealthy, intelligent and liked by the king; Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in the Lagna with the Moon gives royal marks and royal fortunes.
  • Ch. 12 Sl. 1-4: a benefic in an angle or trine is "a powerful remedy for all, related to health", a feature of the chart that offsets another, not something to be performed; and a benefic in the Lagna gives a pleasing appearance.

Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 18 adds that Jupiter (or the Moon-sign lord or the Lagna lord) in an angle makes the middle of life happy. The 1st is an angle and a trine at once, the house BPHS Ch. 34 makes specially auspicious for its lord, so a Jupiter there is in both kinds of good house.

Two more general rules apply to Jupiter here without any condition of sign. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 say a bhava prospers when it is joined or aspected by a benefic; a Jupiter in the 1st joins the Lagna and aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th, so four houses meet that test from one planet. And Ch. 12 Sl. 3 say bodily health suffers when the Lagna or the Moon has a malefic's influence and no benefic's; a Jupiter in the Lagna is that benefic influence, whatever else the Lagna holds.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 50

The verse in full: the native will be attractive in appearance, energetic, long-lived, will act after assessing consequences, be learned, courageous and great. No condition is stated; "long-lived" is the text's word, not a forecast.

Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 1-6

The sutras (pp. 73-74) make the good reading conditional on sign. In its own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) in the 1st: a good speaker, versed in the Shastras, knowing the three Vedas, many children, happy, long-lived and learned. Exalted in Cancer: all of it in full, with the effects of a Maharaja yoga in the 16th year. In an enemy's or a malefic's house, joined with a malefic or debilitated in Capricorn: sinful deeds, an unstable mind, a medium span of life, childless, ungrateful, vain, forsaking relations and well-wishers, fond of travel, hostile and miserable. The commentator says Sutras 1-4 "will definitely be realised if Jupiter is not in any way afflicted", and Sutras 5-6 if it is. The life-span words are the text's, not a forecast.

The Bhrigu Sutras commentator: the ideal position

The commentator (p. 74) calls the 1st "the most ideal position for Jupiter": directional strength and benefic aspects on the 5th, 7th and 9th at once. He adds Jataka Parijata's line that a powerful Jupiter "in his full rays" in a kendra "alone wards off all aristhas", the same idea as BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 3, and names Hamsa for Sagittarius, Pisces and Cancer. Other Views (pp. 74-75): Brihat Jatak, learned; Phaldeepika, a dignified appearance, righteous deeds, long life, fearless, happiness from children; Chamatkar Chintamani, respected for his qualities, spending on pilgrimages. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The engine's lines for the house were written from the sutras' Jupiter chapter: favourable, "wisdom, eloquence and a naturally respected presence, strongest in Jupiter's own sign"; testing, "overconfidence or a tendency to overextend commitments". The favourable line's last clause, own sign, is the sutras' condition as the engine carries it.

Jupiter beside the other planets rising

Planet risingSaravali Ch. 30
Sun (Sl. 2)Prominent, honourable, courageous; also quick to anger, impatient
Moon (Sl. 14)In Cancer, Taurus or Aries: liberal, attractive; elsewhere harsh
Mars (Sl. 26)Adventurous, attractive; also cruel, dull-witted, short-lived, fickle
Mercury (Sl. 38)Intelligent, poetry and mathematics, a sweet speaker
Jupiter (Sl. 50)Attractive, energetic, learned, courageous; weighs consequences
Venus (Sl. 62)Beautiful, happy; timid
Saturn (Sl. 74)Own or exalted: equal to a king; elsewhere misery in boyhood, dirty disposition, indolence
Condensed from Saravali Ch. 30 (saravali.txt 4611-4935).

Jupiter's and Mercury's are the two verses in the column with no harsh clause and no sign condition. Jupiter's is the only one that names a habit of judgement, weighing consequences before acting, which is close to what BPHS gives Jupiter to govern. The Moon and Saturn verses turn on sign; Jupiter's does not, though its Bhrigu Sutras do.

Directional strength and three aspects

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38 and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 give Jupiter and Mercury directional strength in the East, the 1st house; BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7-7 1/2 measure it from the 7th, full at the Lagna. This engine gives Jupiter 4 of 4 directional points in the 1st. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 31) adds that Jupiter and Mercury with this strength, aspected by a benefic, "nullify a hundred defects". The Shad Bala calculator shows each part.

From the 1st, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 1) returns [7, 5, 9]: the 7th by the 7th aspect, the 5th and the 9th by its special aspects. These are the three houses the commentator names. Two of them are houses Jupiter signifies in BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34, the 5th and the 9th, and the 5th and 9th are the two trines. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 adds the entire aspect of Jupiter (and of Mercury) to a planet's strength, where other benefics add a quarter.

Run the other way, by BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 Jupiter aspects the Lagna from the 7th, 9th or 5th. So a Jupiter in the 1st and a Jupiter in a trine are the two ways Jupiter can touch the Lagna, and BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 counts a benefic aspect on the Lagna as the balance to a malefic one.

Hamsa, Gaja Kesari and the Ch. 41 wealth yoga

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Hamsa for Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign in an angle. In the 1st that means Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces rising. The app keeps one line: "dignified and wise, drawn to meaning and comfort, generous in outlook". The yogas calculator lists it; in this engine's sampled charts Hamsa in any angle came to 8.2 per cent.

BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 13 names a wealth combination for Jupiter in its own sign in the Lagna, joined or aspected by Mercury and Mars. That is Sagittarius or Pisces rising only, and the engine reports it only when both are present.

Gaja Kesari in this engine follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4: Jupiter in an angle from the Lagna or the Moon, which a Jupiter in the 1st always is, joined or aspected by a benefic (Venus, Mercury or the Moon), and free of fall, combustion and an enemy sign. So a 1st-house Jupiter forms it when one of those benefics shares the Lagna or stands in the 7th. With the Moon in the Lagna too, it is also BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7's "Jupiter in the Lagna with the Moon". Advanced Predictive Astrology describes a simpler Moon-and-Jupiter form and says it exists "for 9 days" in every lunar month (p. 26). The same book says the Moon-Jupiter rapport "gets completely lost" when Jupiter is 6th or 8th from the Moon (p. 79): for a Jupiter in the 1st, that is the Moon in the 8th or the 6th house.

Chamar Yog is a fourth combination that can involve a rising Jupiter. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 11-12 form it when the Lagna lord is exalted in a Kendra and aspected by Jupiter, or when two benefics are in the Lagna, 7th, 9th or 10th: a king or honoured by the king, long lived, scholarly, eloquent and versed in all arts. A Jupiter in the Lagna with a second benefic in any of those four houses meets the second form. detectYogas has no Chamara rule, so its absence from the yogas list says nothing about your chart.

Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga has the 1st place from a contributor marked good by five of the eight, the Lagna among them, so a Jupiter in the 1st house receives the Lagna's point in its own table. There is a wrinkle in BPHS's translation: its list of good marks (Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55) names only four for the 1st and 4th places, leaving Jupiter itself out, while its list of bad marks (Sl. 31-34) names three, leaving room for five; the engine uses five. The Ashtakavarga calculator returns the row.

What Jupiter owns, from each rising sign

Jupiter is in your 1st when it occupies your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds it. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a sloka for each lord placed in the Lagna.

Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 (3502-3544). Maraka is a timing class; this app computes no death timing.

Five of these rows put Jupiter in an enemy's sign by nature (Mercury's and Venus's signs), and Capricorn rising puts it in its fall. Those are also mostly the Lagnas for which Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic. The rows that are strong by dignity, Cancer, Sagittarius and Pisces, are auspicious, neutral and yoga-forming in Ch. 34. On the Lagna, dignity and lordship agree more often than they do in most houses.

Sagittarius and Pisces: the Lagna lord rising

For these two Lagnas Jupiter is the Lagna lord in its own sign in the Lagna: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 1 reads it as physical happiness and prowess, intelligent, fickle-minded; Ch. 10 Sl. 4 says a strong Lagna lord in an angle wards off evils by itself, as a strong Jupiter in the Lagna does by Sl. 3, so both slokas are met by one planet. Ch. 36 Sl. 38-39 add what the Lagna lord's divisional dignities contribute, a Vargottama Lagna lord giving immunity to diseases, so the Navamsa sign of Jupiter belongs in the reading for these Lagnas.

Sagittarius carries a Moolatrikona question: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 and this engine make the first 10 degrees (one third) Moolatrikona, while the introduction to the Bhrigu Sutras (p. 10) gives only the first 5. For Pisces, Jupiter also owns the 10th, and Ch. 34 names a Yoga with Mars. The Lagna lord exemption means BPHS's Kendra blemish does not attach to Jupiter for either Lagna.

Exchanges with the Lagna lord

BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 give two exchanges their strongest dasha results. When the 9th lord is in the Lagna and the Lagna lord in the 9th, the periods of both are called extremely beneficial; when the 10th lord is in the Lagna and the Lagna lord in the 10th, there is "acquisition of a kingdom" in the dashas of both. A rising Jupiter is half of each for particular Lagnas.

  • Aries rising: Jupiter (9th lord) in Aries with Mars (Lagna lord) in Pisces, the 9th.
  • Cancer rising: Jupiter (9th lord) exalted in Cancer with the Moon (Lagna lord) in Pisces, the 9th.
  • Gemini rising: Jupiter (10th lord) in Gemini with Mercury (Lagna lord) in Pisces, the 10th, where Mercury is in its fall.

The engine reports such exchanges as a Parivarthana Yoga. The Gemini case shows how the readings can cross: the exchange BPHS reads most strongly needs Mercury debilitated, and Jupiter rising in an enemy's sign under the Kendra blemish.

Gemini and Virgo: two angles and nothing else

For Gemini (the 7th and 10th) and Virgo (the 4th and 7th) rising Jupiter owns two angles and no trine. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say benefics owning angles will not give benefic effects, and Sl. 8-10 rank Jupiter's blemish second only to Venus's, and this app lists Kendradhipathya Dosha for these Lagnas, graded mild, with the note that the benefic nature is muted, not reversed. A Jupiter rising in Gemini or Virgo is in an enemy's sign by nature as well, so both Lagnas combine the blemish with weak dignity.

Sign and company

Because Jupiter occupies the rising sign, Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 1-24's sign readings apply row by row. In brief: Aries, wealth through his own efforts and an eminent profession, but many enemies and much expense; Taurus, fortunate, distinguished in speech; Gemini, affluent, eloquent, a good poet; Cancer, a scholar, charitable, famous; Leo, strong, learned, rich; Virgo, virtuous, skilful, versed in the shastras; Libra, a scholar with foreign assignments; Scorpio, a commentator and builder of temples, with diseases and many difficulties; Sagittarius, a preceptor, lasting wealth, a minister; Capricorn, grief and want; Aquarius, a list of faults, among them losing wealth through his own words; Pisces, knows the Vedas, calm in action. Saravali is generous to the enemy-sign rows; the app's planet row follows dignity instead.

Company is read by Saravali Ch. 15's pairs: with the Sun, virtuous, a king's minister, a preceptor; with the Moon, firm in friendship, wealthy, virtuous; with Mars, intelligent, expert in speech; with Mercury, a scholar; with Venus, lives by learning and argument; with Saturn, heroic, wealthy, head of an association. Sl. 23 adds that each result rises or falls with the vargas. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-30 qualify two pairs by Lagna: Jupiter with Saturn gives no promise for Aries or Gemini rising, and Jupiter with Venus none for Leo.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Jupiter's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 1st is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.

  • Always favourable: Cancer (exalted), Sagittarius (Moolatrikona or own) and Pisces (own).
  • Never favourable: Capricorn (debilitated), and Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Libra, Venus's and Mercury's signs, Neutral at best.
  • Favourable only with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Aries, Leo and Scorpio (otherwise Neutral) and Aquarius (otherwise Enemy sign).

One more engine rule: the dasha reading counts a lord placed in the 1st toward a favourable verdict even without strong dignity, provided it is not debilitated or in an enemy sign. dashaQuality(), the good/neutral/challenging grade, reads dignity and the dusthanas only, so the two can differ for a rising Jupiter in a neutral sign.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 make a dasha favourable when its lord is in the Lagna, exalted, or in its own or a friendly sign, so a rising Jupiter meets that test by house. Jupiter's own list in Sl. 45-48 names the 5th, 9th and 10th, not the 1st, along with exaltation, own sign and Moolatrikona. Sl. 49-51 give the reverse for a debilitated, combust or malefic-joined Jupiter, with the trouble at the start of the period and gains later.

For Sagittarius and Pisces rising it is also the Lagna lord's period, which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 head "physical well-being" and this app words as "physical vitality and personal growth". Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make the periods of both lords extremely beneficial when the 9th lord sits in the Lagna and the Lagna lord in the 9th; Jupiter is the 9th lord in the Lagna for Aries and Cancer rising. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Jupiter in the 1st from the Moon is testing in its rule.

The yoga list is long, and one absence is telling. Jupiter is exalted in an angle, so Hamsa; but no Gaja Kesari, because neither the Moon in the 4th nor Venus and Mercury on either side of the Lagna joins or aspects Jupiter. Mars, the 5th and 10th lord and Yoga Karaka for Cancer, shares the Lagna with Jupiter, the 9th lord, so the engine reports both Dharma-Karmadhipati (9th and 10th lords) and its 5th-and-9th Raja Yoga. The planet row and dasha grade follow dignity and read favourable and good.

BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 3 asks for a strong Jupiter, and by the engine's measure this one is not. The Sun is 0.73 degrees away, so Jupiter is combust and loses its whole position score; Saturn aspects the Lagna from the 11th; the total is 5.5 of 20, Weak. Mars beside Jupiter is debilitated and combust too. The Moon in Vishakha, a Jupiter nakshatra, starts the chart in Jupiter's own period, about eight and a half years of it, and Jupiter at 3.08 degrees is in the first decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the start of the period. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in your rising sign in the birth chart calculator, and note the combust flag.
  2. Ask whether it is strong, as Ch. 10 Sl. 3 requires: its dignity, combustion and the aspects on it.
  3. Read what it rules and both Ch. 24 slokas for those lords in the Lagna.
  4. Look for Hamsa (Cancer, Sagittarius, Pisces rising), Gaja Kesari (a benefic with Jupiter in the 1st or in the 7th) and, for Sagittarius and Pisces, the Ch. 41 Sl. 13 yoga.
  5. For Gemini and Virgo rising, read the Kendradhipathya entry as muted, not reversed.
  6. Repeat from the Moon, as BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 11 asks.

A rising sign needs an accurate birth time; what a missing birth time does explains what can be read without one. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter in the 1st protects the whole chart." BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 3 says a strong Jupiter does; strength depends on sign, combustion and aspects.
  • "Hamsa in the Lagna means a strong Jupiter." In the worked chart Hamsa is listed and the Shad Bala is Weak.
  • "Jupiter rising is good for every Ascendant." For Gemini and Virgo it owns two angles, and for five Lagnas it is in an enemy's sign.
  • "Jupiter in the 1st gives Gaja Kesari." Only with a benefic joining or aspecting it and Jupiter neither debilitated, combust nor in an enemy sign, and Advanced Predictive Astrology withdraws the rapport with the Moon in the 6th or 8th house.
  • "The ideal position means ideal results." The commentator's phrase is about directional strength and aspects, not a forecast.
  • "Jupiter rising fixes appearance." The body phrases are compressed verses, not physical or medical predictions.

Questions about Jupiter in the 1st

Is Jupiter good in the 1st house?
The sources are favourable: BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 3 says a strong Jupiter in the Lagna wards off all the evils before it; Saravali gives an attractive, energetic, learned native; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls it Jupiter's ideal position. The sutras themselves reverse it in an enemy's or malefic's sign, with a malefic, or in Capricorn.
Why is the 1st called Jupiter's ideal position?
The commentator's reason (Bhrigu Sutras p. 74): directional strength in the 1st and its benefic aspects on the 5th, 7th and 9th at once.
Which rising signs get Hamsa Yoga from Jupiter in the 1st?
Cancer (exalted), Sagittarius and Pisces (own sign).
What does Jupiter aspect from the 1st?
The 7th by its 7th aspect, and the 5th and 9th by its special aspects.
Why is my rising Jupiter marked testing?
Its dignity label is not Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly. Capricorn rising (fall) and Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Libra rising (enemy signs) never get the favourable line.
Does a combust Jupiter in the 1st still count as strong?
Not in this engine: a combust planet loses its position score. BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 3's condition is a strong Jupiter, and Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4's Gaja Kesari also excludes combustion.
Which wealth yoga uses Jupiter in the 1st?
BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 13: Jupiter in its own sign in the Lagna, joined or aspected by Mercury and Mars. It applies to Sagittarius and Pisces rising.
Is a Jupiter dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 name the Lagna among the favourable positions. The app grades the period good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign, neutral for friendly or neutral.
