What the classical texts say about Mercury in the 1st house: Saravali's reading, the Bhrigu Sutras' own sutras and the commentary on when Mercury stays a benefic, directional strength in the east, BPHS Ch. 10 and Ch. 12 on a benefic in the Lagna, Bhadra and the Ch. 41 wealth yoga, Mercury as a lord in the Lagna for every rising sign, and how this app grades it.

Mercury in the 1st house is the placement where the strength tables and the readings agree most plainly. BPHS and Saravali both give Mercury its directional strength in the east, the Ascendant, so the 1st is its strongest house by that measure. Saravali reads Mercury rising as a flawless physique, intelligence, a sense of the right place and time, skill in poetry and mathematics, skilful and sweet speech, and a long life. BPHS adds that Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle destroys the evils listed before it.

The condition the commentators attach is Mercury's own: it is a benefic only when not joined or aspected by a malefic and not combust, and a Mercury in the 1st is often beside the Sun. This page sets out those statements, what Mercury owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 1st house, Tanu Bhava.

Sources, and the body

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (the Sagar edition, with its commentary and its quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani); chapter, sloka or sutra and page are given in the text. The 1st house is read for the body; appearance and health phrases, and the sutras' lines on the afterlife, are the texts' and are reported, not predicted, and are not medical advice.

The planet of intellect in the house of the self

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2 reads physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature from the Lagna. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 make Mercury the giver of speech, and Sl. 26 describe it as attractive in build, able to use words with many meanings and fond of jokes. Intellect and appearance are on both lists, and Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38 make Mercury and Jupiter, the two planets tied to speech and knowledge, the ones strong in the East, the house BPHS ties to intellect and innate nature.

The 1st is also an angle and a trine at once, which BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 use to make the Lagna lord specially auspicious. For Gemini and Virgo rising Mercury is that lord, and in the 1st it sits in its own sign or its exaltation.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 38

The verse in full: the native will have a flawless physique, be intelligent, will know the proper (beneficial) place and time, be well-versed in poetry and mathematics, be a skilful and sweet speaker and be long-lived. No condition is stated. Among Saravali's seven 1st-house verses (Sl. 2, 14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 74), Mercury's and Jupiter's are the only two with no harsh clause attached; Venus's adds only "timid".

Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 1-17

The sutras (pp. 61-62) open favourably: educated, an early marriage, a devout listener to the scriptures, fond of travel, inclined to mantras and tantras, soft-spoken, learned, forgiving and kind-hearted, with pilgrimages in the 27th year, large gains and academic distinction. Then they split by company. Joined with, or in the sign of, a malefic: diseases (the translator suggests of the skin), bilious trouble and jaundice. With a benefic: good health and an interest in astrology, but also, in the same sutras, a defective limb, hostility to gentlemen, eye trouble, enmity with brothers in the 17th year and deceit. In its own sign or exaltation: happiness from brothers, and the text adds heaven after death; joined or aspected by a malefic, or debilitated in Pisces, it says hell after death, no comforts of the bed and devotion to evil gods. With Saturn, the left eye; with the 6th lord or a debilitated planet, no eye trouble but sin and spending on the undeserving; with a benefic, wealth, grain, religion, skill in arms, arithmetic and logic, and a stout body.

These are the text's statements, reported here, not predictions; the afterlife clauses in particular are not something this app reads. The translator's own comments (pp. 62-63) dispute two of them: the evils given with a benefic in Sutras 5-8 "should not accrue" under benefic influence, and he cannot see how the 6th lord or a debilitated planet beside Mercury could ward off Saturn's harm in Sutra 13.

The Bhrigu Sutras commentary, and the app's lines

The commentary's condition (p. 62): Mercury is a benefic planet unless it is associated with or aspected by a malefic, or combust from nearness to the Sun. That widens BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 (Mercury is a malefic if it joins a malefic) to aspects and combustion. The engine's two 1st-house lines were written from the sutras' Mercury chapter, as its provenance note records: favourable, "real learning, articulate speech and wealth through education or religious life"; testing, "health strain and a tendency toward deceit under real affliction". The heaven and hell clauses of the sutras are the line the engine dropped.

The book's Other Views (p. 63) agree. Brihat Jatak: learned. Phaldeepika: well versed in shastras, a sweet and tactful talker, long-lived. Chamatkar Chintamani: Mercury in the 1st destroys the Arishta (evil effect on longevity) caused by other planets; very intelligent, earning by writing, and good physicians. The closing Note says all agree the placement is benefic, but that Mercury is convertible and gives evil results when joined or aspected by a malefic. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are not in this app's source texts; they are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

Mercury beside the other planets rising

Planet risingSaravali Ch. 30
Sun (Sl. 2)Prominent, honourable, courageous; also quick to anger, impatient, weak sight
Moon (Sl. 14)In Cancer, Taurus or Aries: liberal, attractive; elsewhere harsh
Mars (Sl. 26)Adventurous, courageous, attractive; also cruel, dull-witted, short-lived, fickle
Mercury (Sl. 38)Flawless physique, intelligent, poetry and mathematics, sweet speech
Jupiter (Sl. 50)Attractive, energetic, learned; acts after assessing consequences

Condensed from Saravali Ch. 30 (saravali.txt 4611-4935); harsh clauses are kept, not every clause is.

Read down the column, Mercury's verse is the one built around the mind rather than the body or temperament: intelligence, timing, poetry, mathematics, speech. Only "flawless physique" belongs to the body, which is what Saravali Ch. 30 says the house chapter is for. And the Sun's verse, the planet most often beside a rising Mercury, is one of the mixed ones.

Directional strength: the east

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38 and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 make Mercury, with Jupiter, strong in the East, the Ascendant. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7-7 1/2 compute it from the arc to the 7th house, so it peaks in the 1st and vanishes in the 7th. This engine gives Mercury 4 of 4 directional points in the 1st and none in the 7th. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 31) adds that Jupiter and Mercury with this strength, aspected by a benefic, "nullify a hundred defects" in a chart. The Shad Bala calculator shows each component.

Directional strength is one of six parts of the engine's 20-point score, and for Mercury in the 1st it often meets the largest negative: combustion, which removes the whole position score. The engine's arithmetic shows that a combust Mercury can never reach the Strong band (the other parts add at most 9.375 against a threshold of 13), however much directional strength it has.

The Sun beside a rising Mercury

Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun; it shared the Sun's sign on 51.0 per cent of days in the Mercury page's century of engine positions. The Sun's house follows the clock, the 1st around sunrise, so a Mercury in the 1st belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 12th, 1st or 2nd: around sunrise. With the Sun in the 1st too, the commentator's three exceptions are all in play: a malefic beside Mercury (this engine counts the Sun among its malefics), very likely combustion, and by BPHS's rule a Mercury that has taken the Sun's nature.

The Sun is also the 1st house's karaka in BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34, so a Mercury rising with the Sun sits beside the significator of the self. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 4 reads the pair as in service, sweet in speech, with fame, money and learning, noble, dear to the king and to good people, with strength and beauty, and unsteady wealth.

With the Sun in the 12th, a rising Mercury is in the 2nd sign from the Sun and forms Vesi Yoga; with the Sun in the 2nd, it is in the 12th from the Sun and forms Vasi. Saravali Ch. 14 Sl. 3-5 read Vesi caused by Mercury as soft-spoken, modest and bashful, a servant, suffering penury, and Sl. 7-9 read Vasi by Mercury as sweet in speech, good-looking and obedient to others' orders. The engine detects both by whole sign. Either way, Mercury in the 1st without the Sun in the 1st means one of these two yogas is present.

BPHS on a benefic in the Lagna

  • Ch. 10 Sl. 2: should one of Mercury, Jupiter or Venus be in an angle from the Lagna, all the evils listed in the chapter before are destroyed. The Lagna is an angle.
  • Ch. 12 Sl. 4: a benefic in the Lagna gives a pleasing appearance; the body is comfortable when the Lagna is joined or aspected by a benefic.
  • Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7: the Lagna lord, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle or trine makes one long lived, wealthy, intelligent and liked by the king; Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in the Lagna with the Moon, or in an angle, gives royal marks and royal fortunes.
  • Ch. 12 Sl. 3: health suffers if the Lagna or Moon is joined or aspected by a malefic with no benefic aspect. A benefic Mercury in the Lagna is a benefic joining it, which is the balance this sloka asks for.

Each of these assumes Mercury is acting as a benefic, which is the commentator's condition again. Ch. 12 Sl. 11, marked "Important" in the translation, asks for the same reading from the Moon, so a Mercury in the 1st from the Moon (that is, with the Moon) is the second case the text asks about. That is also the "with the Moon" condition of Sl. 5-7.

Gemini and Virgo rising: Bhadra and the Lagna lord

For these two Lagnas Mercury rises in its own sign (Gemini) or its exaltation (Virgo) and is the Lagna lord, which brings three rules in together. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Bhadra Yoga for Mercury in its own or exaltation sign in an angle, and the Bhrigu Sutras commentary (p. 62) names it for this house; the app's trait line is "sharp-minded and articulate, well-read, independent-natured and protective of family". BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 1 reads the Lagna lord in the Lagna as physical happiness and prowess, intelligent, fickle-minded, with two wives and union with other women. And BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 12 names a wealth combination: Mercury in its own sign in the Lagna, joined or aspected by Saturn and Jupiter. The engine checks it, and the yogas calculator lists it only when both are present.

The two Lagnas differ in BPHS Ch. 34. For Virgo, Mercury owns the 1st and 10th and is auspicious, forming a Yoga with Venus; for Gemini, it owns the 1st and 4th and Ch. 34 does not name it. On the Virgo degrees, BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 split Virgo into exaltation (0-15 degrees), Moolatrikona (15-20) and own sign (20-30), and this engine's dignity label follows the same bands. Past 20 degrees of a Virgo Lagna, Mercury is in its own sign. Bhadra is unaffected, since own sign qualifies.

Virgo rising also meets the first form of a yoga the app does not compute. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 11-12 form Chamar Yog when the Lagna lord is exalted in a Kendra and aspected by Jupiter, or when two benefics are in the Lagna, 7th, 9th or 10th: a king or honoured by the king, long lived, scholarly, eloquent and versed in all arts. A Virgo-rising Mercury is the Lagna lord exalted in a Kendra, so Jupiter aspecting it from the 7th, 5th or 9th completes the first form. The second form is open to any Lagna: Mercury rising with Venus or Jupiter beside it. detectYogas has no Chamara rule, so its absence from the yogas list says nothing.

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 38-39 add what the Lagna lord's divisional dignities contribute: for a Vargottama Lagna lord, immunity to diseases, and for the other divisional groupings, wealth, learning, fame and honour from kings. For Gemini and Virgo rising that lord is Mercury, so its Navamsa sign belongs in the reading, and needs a birth time accurate to the minute.

Two angles and nothing else: Sagittarius and Pisces rising

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say benefics owning angles will not give benefic effects, and Sl. 8-10 rank Mercury the second-least affected of the benefics. For Sagittarius (the 7th and 10th) and Pisces (the 4th and 7th) rising Mercury owns two angles and no trine, and here it rises into the Lagna, a third angle. Ch. 34 still credits a Yoga with the Sun for Sagittarius and calls Mercury malefic and a killer for Pisces. This engine's Kendradhipati Dosha leaves Mercury out altogether, so no dosha appears for either.

What Mercury owns, from each rising sign

Mercury is in your 1st when it occupies your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds it. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a sloka for each house lord placed in the Lagna; the lords of the trines and angles are described warmly there, the 8th and 12th lords as a drain on the body.

Ch. 24 condensed from bphs.txt 1758-2058: several slokas carry further clauses not shown (Sl. 13 inimical to family and hard-hearted; Sl. 49 a miser, crooked, stealing others' wealth; Sl. 73 others' wives, windy diseases; Sl. 85 wounds, hostile to gods and Brahmins). Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 (3502-3544); "meddling" is the translation's word. "Killer" is BPHS's timing term; this app computes no death timing.

The 9th and 10th lords in the Lagna are among the warmest rows, and Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make the periods of both extremely beneficial when the 9th lord sits in the Lagna and the Lagna lord in the 9th, with the same exchange with the 10th lord giving acquisition of a kingdom. Mercury is the 9th lord in the Lagna for Libra and Capricorn rising and the 10th lord there for Virgo and Sagittarius. For Virgo it is both the Lagna lord and the 10th lord in the Lagna in one planet.

Pisces rising is the hard case on both counts: Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, and Ch. 34 calls it malefic and a killer as owner of two angles. Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 23-24 give Mercury in Pisces good conduct and purity, life abroad and skill in stitching, but no children, poverty and no learning in shastra or the arts, and Ch. 45 Sl. 15-18 make a debilitated Mercury mean and at enmity with cousins and other relatives.

Sign, aspect and the 7th house

Because the rising sign is the sign Mercury occupies, Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 1-24's sign readings apply to each row directly. In brief: Aries, very learned, a writer, fond of battles, with debts; Taurus, skilful, liberal, famous, honestly earned wealth; Gemini, sweet in speech, an able speaker and poet; Cancer, learned, a good poet, fond of living abroad; Leo, famous and wealthy but without wisdom and with a weak memory; Virgo, virtuous, eloquent, skilled in writing and the arts; Libra, an able speaker, business in many directions; Scorpio, troubles, grief and debts; Sagittarius, learned, a minister or family priest; Capricorn, mean and dull, does others' work; Aquarius, a list of faults ending "very timid ... and modest"; Pisces as above.

From the 1st, aspectedHouses('mercury', 1) returns [7]: the 7th aspect on the 7th house, the only house Mercury aspects. Turned round, by the full aspects of BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 the Lagna can be aspected by any planet from the 7th, Mars from the 10th or 6th, Jupiter from the 9th or 5th, Saturn from the 11th or 4th. Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 25-66 read Jupiter's aspect on Mercury favourably in every sign group and Saturn's unfavourably except in Mercury's own signs. By the commentator's rule, a malefic's aspect on a rising Mercury is enough to stop it acting as a benefic.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mercury's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 1st is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.

  • Always favourable: Gemini (own) and Virgo (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Pisces (debilitated) and Cancer (the Moon's sign, Neutral at best).
  • Favourable with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Taurus, Leo and Libra (otherwise Neutral; for Leo the lord is the Sun, so a Sun in Leo beside Mercury drops it), and Aries, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius (otherwise Enemy sign).

The row reads dignity, not the commentator's company and combustion conditions. Two other parts of the engine treat the Lagna specially. In the engine, the dasha reading counts a lord placed in the 1st toward a favourable verdict even without strong dignity, unless it is debilitated or in an enemy sign. dashaQuality(), the separate good/neutral/challenging grade, does not: it uses dignity and the dusthanas only.

Timing

Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 make a dasha favourable when its lord is in the Lagna, exalted, or in its own or a friendly sign: the Lagna is named outright, so a rising Mercury meets that test by house. Sl. 62-65 give a well-placed Mercury's dasha wealth, reputation, better knowledge, favour from the government and profit in business, in full when it rules the 10th, which for a rising Mercury means Virgo and Sagittarius.

For Gemini and Virgo rising it is also the Lagna lord's period, which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 head "physical well-being" and this app words as "physical vitality and personal growth". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page the sub-periods. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Mercury in the 1st from the Moon is testing in the engine's benefic rule; do not confuse the 1st from the Moon with the 1st from the Lagna.

Dignity and lordship are strong: own sign, the Lagna lord in the Lagna (Ch. 24 Sl. 1), Bhadra, full directional strength. The Sun is in the 12th, so Mercury is in the 2nd from it and the engine lists Vesi with Mercury as its cause. Mercury is still 12.29 degrees from the Sun, combust by the engine's 14 degrees though not by the Bhrigu Sutras' 8.5, and the position score goes to zero.

Aspects split. The Moon aspects Mercury from the 7th, a benefic in this engine; Saturn aspects it from the 4th by its 10th-place aspect, a malefic, which is one of the commentator's exceptions. Ch. 41 Sl. 12 needs both Saturn and Jupiter to join or aspect an own-sign Mercury in the Lagna; Saturn does, Jupiter is in the 12th and does not, so the wealth yoga is not listed. The Moon in Uttarashadha, a Sun nakshatra, starts the chart in the Sun's period, then the Moon's to 2027. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Mercury is in your rising sign in the birth chart calculator, and note the combust flag and where the Sun is.
  2. Apply the commentator's test: is Mercury joined or aspected by a malefic, or combust?
  3. Read its dignity and what it rules, and both Ch. 24 slokas for those lords in the Lagna.
  4. For Gemini and Virgo rising, look for Bhadra and for the Ch. 41 Sl. 12 yoga (Saturn and Jupiter on Mercury).
  5. Check whether the Sun is in the 12th or 2nd (Vesi or Vasi) or in the 1st itself.
  6. Repeat from the Moon, as Ch. 12 Sl. 11 asks.

A rising sign needs an accurate birth time; what a missing birth time does explains what can be read without one. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Mercury rising means a clever, articulate person." Saravali says so without condition; the commentator makes Mercury's benefic nature depend on company, aspect and combustion.
  • "Full directional strength means a strong Mercury." It is one part of six; a combust Mercury cannot reach the Strong band in this engine.
  • "Bhadra means Mercury in the 1st is excellent." In the worked chart Bhadra is listed while the position score is zero.
  • "The app's favourable line means the commentator's condition is met." The line reads dignity only.
  • "Mercury rising and Mercury in the 1st from the Moon are the same." They coincide only when the Moon is in the Lagna sign.
  • "A rising Mercury fixes appearance." The body phrases are compressed verses about one factor, and not medical or physical predictions.

Questions about Mercury in the 1st

Is Mercury good in the 1st house?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 38 reads it favourably without condition, and BPHS counts a benefic in the Lagna as supportive. The Bhrigu Sutras (Sutras 1-17) split the reading by malefic or benefic company, and the commentary keeps Mercury a benefic only when it is not joined or aspected by a malefic and not combust.
Why is the 1st Mercury's strongest house?
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 give Mercury directional strength in the east, the Ascendant. The engine gives it 4 of 4 there.
Which rising signs get Bhadra Yoga from Mercury in the 1st?
Gemini and Virgo, where Mercury rises in its own sign or exaltation and is also the Lagna lord.
What does Mercury aspect from the 1st?
Only the 7th house, by its 7th aspect.
Why is my rising Mercury marked testing?
Its dignity label is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Pisces rising (debilitated) and Cancer rising never get the favourable line; others depend on where the sign's lord sits.
Does the Sun beside Mercury matter?
By the commentator's rule, yes: a malefic companion and combustion both stop Mercury acting as a benefic. The engine counts the Sun as a malefic and removes the position score of a combust Mercury.
Which wealth yoga uses Mercury in the 1st?
BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 12: Mercury in its own sign in the Lagna, joined or aspected by Saturn and Jupiter. It applies to Gemini and Virgo rising.
Is a Mercury dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 name the Lagna among the favourable positions for any dasha lord. The app grades the period good for exalted or own sign, neutral for friendly or neutral.
