In short

Choghadiya is a popular way of picking a good hour without a full chart: daytime and night-time are each cut into eight parts, and each part takes one of seven names graded from favourable to best avoided. This app cuts them from local sunrise and sunset when a place is given.

What the term means

A choghadiya is one of eight equal parts of the daytime, or of the night. Each takes one of seven names: Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Chal, Udveg, Rog and Kaal. Because the day is measured from sunrise to sunset, a choghadiya is longer in summer daylight than in winter daylight. It is a lighter tool than a full muhurat, needing only the date and place.

Where the term comes from

The classical texts in this site's corpus (BPHS, Saravali, Daivajna Vallabha and the others) do not mention the choghadiya. It belongs to the regional almanac tradition, and this app's tables follow a published modern panchang, which the code checks itself against.

How this app computes it

  • The day runs from local sunrise to sunset and the night from sunset to the next sunrise; each is divided into eight. Without a place the app uses a fixed 06:00 to 18:00 IST day and says so on the page.
  • The day names run in a fixed cycle, each linked to a graha in hora order from the weekday's own lord. The night uses a different cycle, and a weekday table sets which name opens each day and each night.
  • Amrit is graded excellent; Shubh and Labh good; Chal neutral; Udveg, Rog and Kaal to be avoided. The avoid list on the page gathers those three, day and night.
  • Because Rahu Kaal is cut from the same eight daytime parts, it always coincides exactly with one choghadiya slot.
