In short

A muhurat is a window of time chosen for starting something, such as a marriage, a journey or a purchase. This app scores 90-minute windows from 0 to 100 using classical factors (the Moon's nakshatra, the tithi, the weekday, Rahu Kaal) together with the Moon's house in your chart and your numerology Personal Day.

What the term means

Muhurat (Sanskrit muhurta) means a measured span of time, and in practice an auspicious one: the window picked for an undertaking. It belongs to electional astrology, which looks at the sky of the moment of starting rather than the moment of birth, and it draws on the panchang of the day.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 33 already counts the Muhurta among the periods allotted to the grahas. Ch. 89 Sl. 1-7 ask that a rite be performed in a Muhurta "when Candr and stars are favourable", on a day free of Rikta-Bhadra Dosha. Saravali also lists the Muhurta among planetary periods. Neither text sets out the point-scoring used here; that is this app's own arrangement of the classical factors.

How this app computes it

The engine knows six undertakings: marriage, business launch, property purchase, travel, new job and investment. Each has its favoured nakshatras, houses and weekdays. For each 90-minute window it starts from a low base and adds or removes points:

  • the Moon's nakshatra, favoured for the activity or not;
  • the house the Moon transits from your Ascendant (or from your Moon sign without a birth time), with the 6th, 8th and 12th weighing against;
  • the tithi, with eight tithis on an avoid list, and the paksha;
  • a favoured weekday;
  • overlap with Rahu Kaal, the largest single penalty;
  • your numerology Personal Day.

The score is held between 0 and 100. A shown score of 78 or more is labelled an excellent window, 62 or more a good one, and below that usable with care. By default the search looks 30 days ahead and returns the top 3 windows, each with the reasons that moved its score.

What it needs

Date, time and place + What the muhurat is for

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
