In short

Kalachakra Dasha is a dasha of signs, not grahas: the pada of the Moon's birth nakshatra sets a sequence of nine signs, each lasting the years of its lord. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 6-11 calls it supreme. This app computes the sign running at birth, its balance and the dated sequence, and states where the printed text had to be repaired.

What the term means

Kala Chakra is the name BPHS gives to a pair of twelve-sign wheels, and the dasha read from them. Unlike Vimshottari, whose periods belong to grahas, this dasha runs through signs. Each of the 108 padas (quarters of a nakshatra) has its own list of nine signs, and the pada the Moon occupies at birth decides which list applies. Each sign lasts the years assigned to its lord.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 6-11 says the sages "have recognized the Kala Chakr Dasha, as supreme". Sl. 52-58 build two wheels, Savya and Apasavya, and assign the nakshatras to them; the slokas that follow give the nine signs of each pada. Sl. 84 sets the years by the sign's lord: Sun 5, Moon 21, Mars 7, Mercury 9, Jupiter 10, Venus 16, Saturn 4. Sl. 93 gives the balance at birth, Sl. 94-95 name the first and last signs Deha and Jiva, and Sl. 96-100 describe the jumps (Gati) between signs. Ch. 49 and Ch. 64 cover its effects and sub-periods.

How this app computes it

  • The engine finds the Moon's nakshatra and pada, takes that pada's nine signs, and works out how far into the pada the Moon is; that fraction of the pada's total years is treated as already spent.
  • Three of the sixteen printed sign rows are not clean in the translation. The engine repairs each from evidence inside the text, then checks all 108 padas against the totals BPHS gives in Sl. 87-89 when it loads.
  • After the ninth sign the sequence returns to the first sign of the same pada, following the text's own example; the engine records that many later authors continue into the next pada instead.
  • Gati is marked only for the five moves the text names.

A small illustration

For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Moon is in the fourth pada of Mula, a Savya pada. The engine returns Capricorn as the sign running at birth, a Saturn sign worth 4 years, with 3.45 years of it left.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
