Shastihayani Dasha defined: the 60-year, eight-lord dasha of BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 40-41 for a chart with the Sun in the Lagna, its gap at Chitra, and how this app fills it and flags the fill.

In short

Shastihayani Dasha is a 60-year dasha of eight lords that BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 40-41 recommends when the Sun is in the Lagna. Jupiter, the Sun and Mars hold 10 years each, the other five 6 each. The printed sloka leaves Chitra unassigned and gives no balance rule; this app fills both from a named published reference and marks the result as coming from outside BPHS.

What the term means

Shastihayani is named for its total of 60 years. It is one of the special-case dasha systems BPHS sets beside Vimshottari, with eight lords and no Ketu period. Each lord owns a group of nakshatras, and the group holding the Moon at birth gives the first lord. Like Ashtottari, it counts Abhijit as a star.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 40-41 say the dasha "may be adopted in cases, where Surya is posited in Lagn". The lords run Jupiter, Sun, Mars, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Rahu; Jupiter, the Sun and Mars have 10 years each and the rest 6. The sloka then lists the stars under each lord, Abhijit among Saturn's. Two features of the printed table are worth knowing: its groups are not consecutive runs of stars, and Chitra appears nowhere in it.

How this app computes it

  • The star table is taken from the sloka as printed, including its non-consecutive groups. Where published tables disagree with the sloka (Punarvasu, Uttara Ashadha and Revati), the engine keeps the sloka's reading, since BPHS is not silent there.
  • For a Moon in Chitra the engine gives the Moon as lord, following a published table by Sanjay Rath, and says so on the result.
  • The balance at birth is the lord's years times the part of the birth star still to cross, the "as in Vimshottari" rule from the same published reference. BPHS states no balance rule for this system, so every Shastihayani result is flagged as using a rule from outside BPHS.
  • Each chart gets a verdict on whether the Sun is in the Lagna, the condition Sl. 40-41 attaches.

A small illustration

For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Moon is in Mula, one of Venus's stars in the sloka's table. The engine returns Venus, a 6-year period, with 0.3 of a year left, marks the balance as from outside BPHS, and reports that the chart does not meet the condition: the Sun is in the 11th house, not the Lagna.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
