In short
BPHS is Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, a classical Sanskrit astrology text attributed to the sage Parashara. It is the source this app leans on most: the divisional charts, the Arudhas, the Char Karakas and the alternate dasha systems all cite a BPHS chapter and sloka in the engine code.
What the term means
BPHS is the usual short form of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, "the great treatise on hora by Parashara". It is the founding text of what is now called the Parashari system. On this site, "BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12" means a chapter and a sloka (verse) of the English translation held in the project's library.
Where the term comes from
The translation in the library is laid out as a conversation: the student Maitreya asks and Maharishi Parashar answers. Its contents run from Ch. 1, "The Creation", to Ch. 97, "Conclusion". Between them sit the grahas and rashis, the sixteen divisions of a sign (Ch. 6), the twelve houses one chapter each, the Bhava Padas (Ch. 29), the Karakas (Ch. 32), the dashas (Ch. 46 onward), the AshtakaVarg chapters (Ch. 66-72), and a long run of remedy chapters near the end. It is a compiled text rather than one argument, and later commentators read some slokas differently; the translator's note to Ch. 30 records "more than two views" on one of them.
How this app uses it
- The sources page lists BPHS first and describes it as "the text this app leans on most".
- The engine cites it beside the code that follows it: the divisional charts (Ch. 6-7), the Arudha Lagna (Ch. 29), the Upa Pad (Ch. 30), the Char Karakas (Ch. 32), the Karakamsa (Ch. 33) and the alternate dashas, including the Chara Dasha (Ch. 46).
- Some passages are deliberately not carried over: general Raj Yoga detection (the text gives more than thirty rules), the physical and death detail of Ch. 75, the rules that time death from a dasha, and the heaven and "mean deities" clauses about the 12th from the Karakamsa.
- Remedies are not prescribed anywhere on the site, though BPHS has chapters on them. The methodology page explains how sources are handled.
Pages that use this term

- What a Mahadasha is - the Vimshottari periods of Ch. 46.
- Antardasha and Pratyantardasha - the proportional sub-periods.
- Ishta Devata and the Karakamsa - what Ch. 33 reads, and what this app leaves out.
