In short

The Bhrigu Sutras are a classical text attributed to the sage Bhrigu, devoted to the effects of each planet in each of the twelve houses. This app wrote its planet-in-house readings, nine grahas across twelve houses, after reading each graha's chapter, as filtered paraphrase rather than transcription.

What the term means

The Bhrigu Sutras (the translation also calls it "Bhrigu Sutram") is a short text attributed to Bhrigu. Its subject is narrow: what a planet does in each bhava (house) of the birth chart. Unlike BPHS, which runs from creation to remedies, it does almost nothing else.

Where the term comes from

The edition in the project's library has two parts. Part I sets out the zodiac, the signs, and the nature, exaltation, debilitation and friendships of the nine planets. Part II opens with the significations of the twelve houses, then gives one chapter per planet, from the Sun (Ch. II) to Saturn (Ch. VIII), with Rahu and Ketu sharing Ch. IX, which notes "controversy" about their roles. Each chapter moves house by house in numbered sutras: the Sun in the 1st is Sutras 1-21, the Sun in the 2nd Sutras 22-32. The chapters also separate a planet in its own or exaltation sign from one in debilitation, and the commentary sets "other views" from other classical texts beside the sutras.

How this app uses it

  • The planet-in-house readings come from buildPlanetHouseEffects() in the kundali engine: nine grahas across twelve houses, each written after reading that graha's own chapter.
  • Each reading has a favourable and an unfavourable form, chosen by the planet's dignity: a strong placement lets the house flourish, a weak one tests it.
  • Rahu and Ketu come from the book's single combined chapter, so their entries per house are close to each other.
  • The source prose is not reproduced. The engine notes that the original carries death predictions for family members, disease presented as destiny, and talk of curses, and none of that is carried over.
  • The sources page records this, and how an earlier, narrower claim about it was corrected.
