Gaj Kesari Yoga needs Jupiter in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon, a benefic joining or aspecting it, and no debilitation, combustion or enemy sign. The rule from BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4, where later authors narrow it, how often it fires, and a chart you can re-enter.

In short

Gaj Kesari Yoga is formed when Jupiter stands in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the ascendant or from the Moon, is joined or aspected by a benefic, and is not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign, as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra states it in chapter 36. This app tests all four conditions, and the rule fired in 566 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.

Gaj Kesari is probably the most quoted yoga in Indian astrology, and the name explains why: gaja is the elephant, kesari the lion, and the image is of a chart that carries both. What a yoga actually is, though, is a named rule about where planets stand. This page sets out that rule exactly as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives it, shows where later authors shortened it to something much looser, explains how this app tests each condition, and walks through one chart. The general question of what any yoga is worth is treated in what a yoga in your chart means; this page goes deeper into one rule.

The formation rule: four conditions, all required

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4 states the yoga in one sentence. Read clause by clause, it asks four things of Jupiter, and the yoga is caused only when all four hold at once.

  1. Jupiter is in a kendra - the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house - counted either from the Lagna (ascendant) or from the Moon. The text names both anchors with "or", so either one is enough.
  2. Jupiter is joined with (yuti) or aspected by a benefic. A benefic in the same sign, or a benefic whose drishti falls on Jupiter's sign, satisfies it.
  3. Jupiter is not debilitated - not in Capricorn, its neecha sign.
  4. Jupiter is neither combust (too close to the Sun) nor in an inimical sign - a sign whose lord is hostile to it.

The first condition is the famous one; the other three are the ones popular retellings drop. A chart can meet the first condition and still fail the rule.

Why "from the Moon" and "from the ascendant" are both in the rule

Counting houses from the Moon as well as from the ascendant is ordinary Parashari practice, and many yogas in BPHS Ch. 36 use both anchors. Houses here are whole signs, so the count is a count of signs: if the Moon is in Leo, the kendras from it are Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius and Taurus. Jupiter in the same sign as the Moon counts as the 1st from it, and the Moon in that sign also supplies the "yuti with a benefic" of condition two. Because kendras repeat every three signs, the relationship is mutual: if Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon, the Moon is in a kendra from Jupiter. That is why some authors describe the yoga as "Moon and Jupiter in mutual kendras".

What the texts say: BPHS Ch. 36 and later authors

The two BPHS translations in the corpus read identically at Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4. The yoga sits in the chapter called "Many Other Yogas", between the Subh and Asubh Yogas of Sl. 1-2 and Amala Yoga of Sl. 5-6. Its stated result is that the person will be splendorous, wealthy, intelligent, endowed with many laudable virtues, and will please the king. That is the whole of what Parashara says about it: there is no gradation by house, no timing rule, and no list of exceptions beyond the three disqualifiers inside the condition itself.

Later authors are less exact about the condition and more expansive about the result, and they do not agree with each other.

  • Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 27, defines the yoga as the Moon and Jupiter in mutual kendras - the first condition alone, from the Moon only. It then reports a bolder classical result (victory over enemies like a lion, lofty speech in an assembly, long life and renown) and immediately qualifies it: because the configuration recurs for days in every lunar month, the author writes, people with otherwise ordinary charts do not draw those results from this one yoga. The same page adds that if the Moon or Jupiter owns the 6th house, recognition comes against opposition.
  • The same book, p. 80, again defines it as Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon, and sets against it the case of Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon, which it calls Sakata Yoga.
  • The same book, p. 130, gives a timing opinion: where Gaj Kesari is present, the Moon's period yields the stronger results and Jupiter's the ordinary ones. This is the author's rule from case studies, not a BPHS sloka.
  • The Bhrigu Sutras translation mentions the yoga only in its commentary: on p. 33, Jupiter 7th to the Moon "will give rise to Gajkesari yoga", and on p. 78, Jupiter with the Moon in the 4th. Neither passage states the benefic or dignity conditions.

Saravali and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, the other two texts in the library, do not name the yoga at all.

Where the sources disagree

The modern shorthand - Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon - is narrower than BPHS on one side (it drops the ascendant anchor) and much wider on the other (it drops the benefic contact and all three disqualifiers). This app follows BPHS, the oldest and fullest statement of the rule. A chart that "has Gaj Kesari" by the shorthand may not have it here, and the reverse is possible when Jupiter is in a kendra only from the ascendant.

How the engine tests each condition

The yoga calculator runs the same detector as the full birth chart. For Gaj Kesari it works through the four conditions in order and reports the yoga only when every one passes.

ConditionWhat the engine checks
KendraJupiter's whole-sign house is 1, 4, 7 or 10 from the ascendant, or its count from the Moon's house is 1, 4, 7 or 10
Benefic contactVenus, Mercury or the Moon in Jupiter's house, or casting its aspect onto Jupiter's house (Jupiter itself does not count)
Not debilitatedJupiter's dignity grade is not "Debilitated"
Not combust, not in an enemy signJupiter's combustion flag is off, and its dignity grade is not "Enemy sign"
The engine's four checks, in the order the code applies them. The result names which anchor (ascendant, Moon or both) and which benefics satisfied it.

Aspects are the ordinary 7th-sign aspect for the three benefics; none of them has a special aspect. The dignity grade comes from the same table the app uses everywhere, so the dignity you see beside Jupiter in your chart is the one the yoga is tested against.

Two readings the sloka leaves open

The text does not settle everything, and the engine has to choose. Both choices are recorded in the code, and both are stated here so you can disagree with them.

  • Which planets are benefics. BPHS Ch. 3 counts the Moon as a benefic only when waxing and Mercury only when unafflicted. The Gaj Kesari sloka says only "benefic" and names no narrower list, so the engine uses its standing set - Venus, Mercury and the Moon - regardless of the Moon's phase or Mercury's company. A reader who applies the Ch. 3 qualifications strictly will see the yoga in fewer charts.
  • What "inimical rasi" means. The sloka does not say whether the enmity is the natural relationship between Jupiter and the sign's lord or the compound one that adds the temporary relationship from their positions in your chart. The engine uses the compound relation, as it does for every other "enemy sign" reading. So Jupiter in a sign whose lord is a natural enemy can still pass when that lord sits in a temporarily friendly position from it; the essay linked above works through exactly such a case.

How often the rule fires

In the engine's own sample the full four-condition rule fired in 566 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 18.9 percent - a little under one in five. That is a count of chart moments, not of people, and it says nothing about who those charts belong to. It does say that Gaj Kesari is common. A yoga that appears in roughly one chart in five cannot, on its own, separate one life from another very sharply, which is the same caution Advanced Predictive Astrology raises on p. 27 for the looser definition.

Worked example: a 1986 New Delhi chart

Take a birth on 27 January 1986 at 22:31 IST in New Delhi. You can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator and check every figure below. The ascendant is Virgo at 14.39 degrees, so Virgo is the 1st house and every other house follows sign by sign.

GrahaSign and degreeHouseEngine notes
JupiterAquarius 0.686Friendly sign; not combust; not retrograde
MoonLeo 4.2112Neutral; Magha pada 2
SunCapricorn 13.815Neutral

VenusCapricorn 15.755Friendly sign; combust

engine-facts.mjs gaj-kesari-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Whole-sign houses from a Virgo ascendant.

Now apply the four conditions one at a time.

  1. Kendra. From the ascendant, Jupiter is in the 6th house - a dusthana, not a kendra, so that anchor fails. From the Moon, count Leo as 1: Virgo 2, Libra 3, Scorpio 4, Sagittarius 5, Capricorn 6, Aquarius 7. Jupiter is 7th from the Moon, which is a kendra. One anchor is enough, so the condition holds.
  2. Benefic contact. Mercury and Venus, the other benefics, are in Capricorn in the 5th; their 7th-sign aspect falls on the 11th, not on Jupiter. The Moon in Leo casts its 7th-sign aspect onto Aquarius, Jupiter's sign. The Moon is therefore both the anchor of condition one and the benefic of condition two.
  3. Not debilitated. Jupiter is in Aquarius, not Capricorn. Holds.
  4. Not combust and not in an enemy sign. Jupiter is in a different sign from the Sun and its combustion flag is off; the engine grades it "Friendly sign" in Aquarius. Holds.

The engine's output for this chart reports Gaj Kesari Yoga as present, naming Jupiter and the Moon, with the reading that Jupiter sits in a kendra from the Moon, is aspected by the Moon, and is not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign. Its interpretation line places Jupiter in house 6 and gives the classical reading of splendour, intelligence and good standing.

Two details in this chart are worth noticing. First, Mercury and Venus are both combust, sitting with the Sun in Capricorn - but combustion is tested only on Jupiter, so it does not affect this yoga. Had Jupiter been in Capricorn with them it would have failed twice, as debilitated and as combust. Second, under the stricter reading of BPHS Ch. 3, the Moon's status as a benefic depends on its phase, and this chart rests entirely on the Moon; a reader who rejects the Moon as a benefic here would find no other benefic aspecting Jupiter. That is the first ambiguity above, appearing in a real case. Jupiter also sits in the 6th house and the Moon in the 12th from the ascendant: BPHS attaches no house condition beyond the kendra, so the yoga stands, and what those houses add is a separate question for the house pages.

Gaj Kesari beside its neighbouring yogas

Several other rules the engine tests involve the same planets, and it helps to keep them apart. Hamsa Yoga, one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas, also needs Jupiter in a kendra - but from the ascendant only, and in its own or exaltation sign. Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon, so a Jupiter 7th from the Moon can contribute to both. Sunapha and Anapha count planets in the 2nd and 12th from the Moon, and Mudrika Yoga extends the mutual-kendra idea to Venus, Jupiter and the Moon together. Amala Yoga, the very next rule in BPHS Ch. 36, asks only for a benefic alone in the 10th from the ascendant or the Moon.

For the planets themselves, the Moon and Jupiter pages cover their dignities and significations, and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period most often linked to this yoga - with the caveat that Advanced Predictive Astrology credits the Moon's period, not Jupiter's, with the stronger results.

What the rule does and does not establish

Gaj Kesari, as BPHS states it, is a check that Jupiter is angular to one of the chart's two main reference points, is in contact with a benefic, and is not weakened by sign or by the Sun. The classical text attaches a favourable reading to that check. It does not say how strongly the reading applies, or when; later authors supply opinions on both, and they disagree. A yoga is a named rule about positions, not a promise. Seeing it in your chart tells you that Jupiter meets these four conditions; it does not tell you what your life will be, and a chart without it is not missing anything the text guarantees elsewhere.

To see whether your own chart meets the rule, and which anchor and which benefic satisfied it, run the yoga calculator. It shows the same four checks, so you can see which ones pass and which one fails.

Questions about Gaj Kesari Yoga

Is Gaj Kesari Yoga just Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon?
That is the popular shorthand, and some later authors use it. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4 asks for more: a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon, a benefic joining or aspecting Jupiter, and Jupiter not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign. This app tests the full rule.
Does Jupiter conjunct the Moon form Gaj Kesari Yoga?
It can. In whole-sign houses the same sign counts as the 1st from the Moon, which is a kendra, and the Moon joining Jupiter supplies the benefic contact. Jupiter must still pass the three disqualifiers: not in Capricorn, not combust, and not in an enemy sign by the engine's compound grade.
Why does my chart show Gaj Kesari in one app and not in another?
Most often because the other app uses the shorthand (Moon-kendra only) or skips the disqualifiers, or because it treats the Moon as a benefic only when waxing. A different ayanamsa or house system can also move Jupiter or the Moon across a sign boundary.
How common is Gaj Kesari Yoga?
In this engine's sample the full rule fired in 566 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 18.9 percent. It is a common yoga, which is one reason no single yoga should be read in isolation.
Does a debilitated or combust Jupiter cancel the yoga?
Yes, by the wording of BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4: the yoga is caused only when Jupiter avoids debilitation, combustion and an inimical sign. The engine does not report the yoga in those cases.
When does Gaj Kesari Yoga give its results?
BPHS gives no timing rule for it. Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 130) gives the author's opinion that the Moon's period gives the stronger results and Jupiter's the ordinary ones. This app reports the yoga's presence; it does not predict what a period will bring.
Is there anything I should do if my chart has, or lacks, Gaj Kesari Yoga?
No. The yoga is a named rule about planetary positions, not an instruction. This app does not prescribe remedies, and a chart without it is not deficient by any rule the text states.
