In short
A Dusthana is one of the three difficult houses: the 6th, 8th and 12th from the Ascendant. BPHS lists them as the "evil" or Dusthan Bhavas. In this app the label is a named condition, not a verdict: it stops a planet-in-house or dasha reading from being graded favourable, and it is the setting for the Vipareeta Raja yogas.
What the term means
Dusthana means "difficult place". The Dusthanas are the 6th, 8th and 12th houses from the Lagna. BPHS Ch. 11 reads enemies from the 6th, longevity from the 8th and expenses from the 12th, among other things. The same three houses are also called the Trika houses. A label is all it is: the house still holds its full list of meanings, and a planet there is still read by its sign and strength.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 names "Ari, Randhr and Vyaya", the 6th, 8th and 12th, as the evil or Dusthan Bhavas, and in the same breath lists Ari among the Upachayas, so the 6th sits in two groups. Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 repeats the three under three names, "Trikas, Dusthan, or malefic Bhavas". The dasha chapters carry the idea into timing: a period lord placed in one of them is read as giving adverse results.
How this app uses it
- The engine's list is houses 6, 8 and 12. The strength table prints "dusthana house" in the reason line; on its own that does not move the strength score. In a 1990-05-15, 10:30 IST Mumbai chart Jupiter sits in the 12th and still bands Strong, while the Moon in the 6th, also in an enemy sign, bands Weak.
- A planet-in-house reading is graded favourable only when the planet has strong dignity and is not in a Dusthana. A Mahadasha lord in a Dusthana is graded challenging.
- The career and money engine notes the 6th's double role, Dusthana and Upachaya, and credits it on the job side.
- When the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th itself sits in one of those houses, the engine reports Harsha, Sarala or Vimala Yoga, the Vipareeta Raja yogas.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
