In short
Harsha Yoga forms when the lord of the 6th house sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. It is one of three Vipareeta Raja Yogas this app detects, with Sarala (8th lord) and Vimala (12th lord). It fired in 752 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (25.1 percent), so it is common.
Harsha Yoga is a rule about one house lord: the graha that rules your 6th house, when it is itself placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Those three are the dusthanas, the houses of difficulty, also called trika houses. The idea behind the group it belongs to - Vipareeta Raja Yoga, "reversed" royal yoga - is that a difficult house's lord sitting in another difficult house cancels rather than compounds. This app detects three members, one per trika house: Harsha for the 6th lord, Sarala for the 8th and Vimala for the 12th. Unlike most named yogas, Harsha is common - roughly one chart in four. What a yoga is worth as a statement about a life is discussed in what a yoga in your chart means.
The rule: how Harsha Yoga forms
The engine runs one loop over the 6th, 8th and 12th houses; for the 6th it does this:
- Find the sign on the 6th house, counted in whole signs from the ascendant - the sixth sign from the rising sign.
- Take that sign's traditional lord - the house lord. Only the seven visible grahas rule signs, so the lord is always one of Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn.
- Look up the house that lord occupies. If it is the 6th, 8th or 12th, Harsha Yoga is reported.
The engine's sentence names the lord and its house, for example "Mercury, lord of your 6th house, sits in your 12th house - a trika (6th/8th/12th) lord placed in another trika house", followed by the shared Vipareeta reading.
Ambiguities the engine resolved
- Own house counts. A 6th lord in the 6th itself fires the yoga. The Uttara Kalamrita rule as quoted in the corpus lists only the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th; including the 6th follows the Bhrigu Sutras commentators' extension (next section). In the sample, 235 of the 752 Harsha moments were exactly this case. The engine's wording "another trika house" fits the other two placements; for these 235 the lord is in its own house.
- No purity test. The quoted rule adds that the trika lords should be free of relation with other lords and that no other planet should occupy those houses. The engine tests neither.
- No dignity, combustion or retrograde test. A 6th lord that is debilitated, combust or retrograde in the 8th still counts.
- No conjunction or exchange route. The quoted rule also accepts the trika lords joined by exchange, aspect or conjunction. The engine detects only the placement route; an exchange of signs between, say, the 6th and 8th lords already counts anyway, since each then sits in a trika house.
- The ascendant is the only reference point. Houses are not counted from the Moon. The birth chart therefore needs an accurate birth time; a different rising sign means a different 6th lord.
Who rules your 6th house
Because the rule turns on a lordship, it helps to see the twelve cases at once. The 6th sign from each ascendant and its lord:
| Ascendant | 6th sign | 6th lord |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo | Mercury |
| Taurus | Libra | Venus |
| Gemini | Scorpio | Mars |
| Cancer | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Leo | Capricorn | Saturn |
| Virgo | Aquarius | Saturn |
| Libra | Pisces | Jupiter |
| Scorpio | Aries | Mars |
| Sagittarius | Taurus | Venus |
| Capricorn | Gemini | Mercury |
| Aquarius | Cancer | Moon |
| Pisces | Leo | Sun |
The table explains the sample's spread by lord. Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury each rule the 6th for two ascendants; the Moon and the Sun for one each. Accordingly the Harsha moments split Saturn 150, Mars 145, Jupiter 137, Venus 121, Mercury 104, and then Moon 49 and Sun 46. One more structural fact: for no ascendant does a single graha rule two of the three trika houses, so Harsha, Sarala and Vimala always involve three different lords.
What the classical texts say
A source note first. The names Harsha, Sarala and Vimala do not appear in any text in this project's corpus: not in BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Advanced Predictive Astrology, Daivajna Vallabha, or the yoga pages (pp. 145-154) of Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. The rule is attested there under the group name Vipareeta Raja Yoga; the three individual names come from the wider tradition and are the engine's labels.
- Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, pp. 117-118, quotes Uttara Kalamrita: the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th, the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th, the 12th lord in the 6th or 8th, or the three mutually related by conjunction, aspect or exchange, "are expected to confer a Raja Yoga" provided they are not related to lords of other houses, and "Planets other than 6/8/12 should not be in these houses". Its case studies use the yoga repeatedly.
- The Bhrigu Sutras commentary, p. 87, quotes the same Uttarakalamrita rule, and then gives the commentators' own view that the 12th lord in the 12th, the 8th in the 8th and the 6th in the 6th "should also give the same results". That extension is the reading the engine follows.
- BPHS states no Vipareeta rule, but its house-lord chapter gives each case. Ch. 24 Sl. 66 has the 6th lord in the 6th bringing enmity with kinsmen but friendship with others; Sl. 68 the 6th lord in the 8th bringing illness and envy; Sl. 72 the 6th lord in the 12th bringing spending on vices. Read alone, these are not the reversal the Vipareeta idea promises.
- BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7, on longevity, is closer to it: long life is indicated if the 6th lord is in the 12th, or if the 6th lord is in the 6th while the 12th lord is in the 12th.
- Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, pp. 153-154 (page images), classes exchanges among the 6th, 8th and 12th lords as Dainya yogas, inauspicious, then records a "difference of opinion": some hold such exchanges make one prosperous if the lords aspect each other and are untouched by other lords, and "call it a 'Vipareetha Raja Yoga'".
Where the texts and the engine part
The corpus does not agree on whether a trika lord in a trika house is good news, and the engine takes the most inclusive reading of the rule: placement alone, own house included, with no purity conditions. A chart that passes the engine's test may fail the Uttara Kalamrita reading quoted in Advanced Predictive Astrology on three counts - own house, other planets in the trikas, and ties to other lords. The engine's shared sentence for the group is: "A Vipareeta Raja Yoga: classically read as converting what would otherwise be a difficult house's energy into an unexpected source of gain, often most visible after periods of real struggle rather than as easy, steady fortune."
How rare it is
Harsha fired in 752 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 25.1 percent. That is what the rule's shape predicts: any lord placed in three of the twelve houses has roughly a one-in-four chance. Within those 752, the lord was in the 6th in 235, the 8th in 274 and the 12th in 243 - no placement dominates. The lord was retrograde in 133 and combust in 124, none of which affects the result.
| Vipareeta yogas in one chart | Moments (of 3,000) |
|---|---|
| None | 1,303 |
| Exactly one | 1,224 |
| Exactly two | 411 |
| All three (Harsha, Sarala and Vimala) | 62 |
| Harsha alone / with Sarala only / with Vimala only | 403 / 153 / 134 |
So 1,697 of the 3,000 moments had at least one of the three. A yoga present in more than half of all charts, as a group, cannot be a mark of distinction on its own; the texts that keep the purity conditions are, in effect, trying to make it rarer.
Worked example: 10 January 1985, New Delhi
The first moment in the engine's walk with Harsha Yoga is 10 January 1985 at 08:37 IST in New Delhi, with a Capricorn ascendant at 17.6 degrees. Counting from Capricorn, Gemini is the 6th sign, Leo the 8th and Sagittarius the 12th. The same moment happens to be the first in the walk for Sarala and Vimala too.
| Graha | Sign and degree | House | Rules (for Capricorn rising) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Sagittarius 4.27 | 12 | 6th (Gemini) and 9th (Virgo) |
| Sun | Sagittarius 26.18 | 12 | 8th (Leo) |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius 29.96 | 12 | 12th (Sagittarius) and 3rd (Pisces); combust |
| Moon | Leo 5.43 | 8 | 7th (Cancer) |
| Mars | Aquarius 18.47 | 2 | 4th and 11th |
| Venus | Aquarius 12.8 | 2 | 5th and 10th |
| Saturn | Scorpio 1.91 | 11 | 1st and 2nd |
- The 6th sign from Capricorn is Gemini; its lord is Mercury.
- Mercury is in Sagittarius, the 12th house. The 12th is a trika house, so Harsha Yoga forms.
The engine's sentence is "Mercury, lord of your 6th house, sits in your 12th house - a trika (6th/8th/12th) lord placed in another trika house." In the same chart the Sun (8th lord) and Jupiter (12th lord) are also in the 12th, so Sarala and Vimala form as well - this is one of the 62 sampled moments with all three.
Now test the stricter Uttara Kalamrita reading by hand. In its favour, the three trika lords are joined in one sign, which that rule names as a route. Against it: the Moon, lord of the 7th, sits in the 8th house, and Advanced Predictive Astrology's version says planets other than the trika lords "should not be in these houses"; and Mercury also rules the 9th, a trikona, so it is not a pure 6th lord. A reader following that version would hesitate here; the engine does not.
The engine also reports Vasi, Kedara, Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga and Parivartana Yoga (Mars and Saturn in each other's signs) for this moment. Its timing step would point to Mercury's own period, the Mercury Mahadasha, for Harsha.
Harsha beside Sarala and Vimala
The three Vipareeta yogas use one test on three different lords, so what separates them is which house the lord rules. Harsha concerns the 6th, the house BPHS calls Ari, a word meaning enemy;Sarala concerns the 8th, Vimala the 12th. In the sample they fired at similar rates - Harsha 752, Sarala 773, Vimala 707 - and paired up at similar rates too. Harsha is also distinct from a 6th lord that is merely strong: a 6th lord exalted in the 10th forms no Vipareeta yoga at all, because the rule asks only whether the lord sits in a trika house. And it should not be confused with a planet that simply occupies the 6th; Harsha is about the lord of the 6th, wherever the 6th's occupants happen to be.
What Harsha Yoga does not tell you
Harsha says where one house lord sits. It does not weigh that lord's dignity or company, it does not check the purity conditions the classical rule attaches, and BPHS's own house-lord slokas for the same placements read darker than the Vipareeta idea. With a sample frequency near one in four, it is best read as a pointer to look at the 6th lord more closely, not as a finding about a life. This app links it to the lord's Mahadasha as a timing convention, not a forecast.
To see whether your 6th lord forms Harsha, and whether Sarala or Vimala form alongside it, run the yoga calculator. It names the lord and the house it found, so you can apply the stricter tests yourself.
Questions about Harsha Yoga
- What is Harsha Yoga?
- It is the 6th-house member of the Vipareeta Raja Yoga group: the lord of the 6th house placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. Sarala and Vimala are the 8th- and 12th-lord versions.
- Does the 6th lord in the 6th house count?
- In this app, yes. The Uttara Kalamrita rule quoted in Advanced Predictive Astrology lists only the 8th and 12th for the 6th lord; the Bhrigu Sutras commentators extend it to the lord's own house, and the engine follows them. 235 of the 752 sampled Harsha moments were this case.
- Is Harsha Yoga found in BPHS or Saravali?
- Not by that name. Neither text in this project's corpus names Harsha, Sarala or Vimala. BPHS gives the individual placements in Ch. 24 and a related longevity rule in Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7.
- How common is Harsha Yoga?
- It fired in 752 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 25.1 percent. At least one of the three Vipareeta yogas appeared in 1,697 of the 3,000.
- Does a combust or retrograde 6th lord cancel it?
- Not in the engine, which tests neither. In the sample the 6th lord was combust in 124 and retrograde in 133 of the Harsha moments.
- Can Rahu or Ketu form Harsha Yoga?
- No. The nodes do not rule signs in the scheme the engine uses, so they are never a house lord. They can, however, occupy a trika house, which the stricter classical reading would count against the yoga.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
