Vimala Yoga is the 12th-house member of the Vipareeta Raja Yoga group: the lord of the 12th placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. The rule as the engine codes it, the own-house question, what BPHS says of each placement, how often it fires and a 1985 chart with Jupiter in its own 12th.

In short

Vimala Yoga forms when the lord of the 12th house sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. It is the 12th-lord member of the Vipareeta Raja Yoga group this app detects, beside Harsha (6th lord) and Sarala (8th lord). It fired in 707 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (23.6 percent).

Vimala Yoga is about the lord of the 12th house, the house BPHS calls Vyaya - loss and expenditure. When that lord sits in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th itself, the engine reports Vimala. Those three houses are the dusthanas, and the family of rules that treats a dusthana lord in a dusthana as a reversal of fortune is Vipareeta Raja Yoga. Its two other members here are Harsha (6th lord) and Sarala (8th lord). Vimala's peculiarity is that the classical texts read the 12th lord's three placements in almost opposite ways from the Vipareeta idea, and that the most disputed case - the lord in its own 12th - is exactly the one in this page's worked example. What any yoga amounts to is covered in what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: how Vimala Yoga forms

  1. Find the 12th sign from the ascendant - the sign just before the rising sign. In whole-sign houses, that is the 12th house.
  2. Take its lord, one of the seven visible grahas (the nodes rule no sign in the engine's scheme).
  3. If the lord's house is the 6th, 8th or 12th, the engine reports Vimala Yoga.

The engine writes, for example, "Jupiter, lord of your 12th house, sits in your 12th house - a trika (6th/8th/12th) lord placed in another trika house", and adds the reading shared by all three Vipareeta yogas.

Ambiguities, and one loose phrase

  • The 12th lord in the 12th counts. The Uttara Kalamrita rule, as both Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras commentary quote it, has the 12th lord in the 6th or 8th only. The commentators then extend it to the lord in its own house, and the engine follows that extension. In the sample, 248 of the 707 Vimala moments were this case.
  • The engine's sentence says "another trika house" in every case, including those 248, where the lord is in its own 12th. The rule is right to count them under the reading it follows; the phrase simply does not fit them. This page reports the discrepancy rather than smoothing it over.
  • No purity conditions. The quoted rule asks that the trika lords be unrelated to other house lords and that no other planet sit in the trika houses. Neither is tested.
  • No dignity, combustion or retrograde test. A 12th lord combust in the 12th - as in the example below - still counts.

The table shows how often the 12th lord also governs a strong house. For Aries and Libra it rules the 9th, and for Gemini and Sagittarius the 5th - both trikonas. For Aquarius it is the ascendant lord. Only Leo and Virgo have a "pure" 12th lord, the Moon and the Sun. The sample's split by lord - Mercury 146, Venus 141, Mars 132, Jupiter 103, Saturn 81, Sun 69, Moon 35 - follows the same two-ascendants-or-one pattern, with the slow planets' counts also shaped by where they spent the sampled years.

What the classical texts say

No text in this project's corpus uses the name Vimala for this rule: not BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Advanced Predictive Astrology, Daivajna Vallabha, or Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga pages (pp. 145-154). (BPHS does contain the word "Vimal", but as an unrelated name in a list.) The rule itself is attested as Vipareeta Raja Yoga.

  • Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, pp. 117-118, quoting Uttara Kalamrita: the "lord of 12 in 6/8", with the 6th and 8th lords' cases or the three mutually related, "are expected to confer a Raja Yoga", provided they are unrelated to other houses' lords and no other planets occupy the trika houses.
  • The Bhrigu Sutras, p. 87, give the same rule as item (c), "lord of 12th being posited in the 8th or the 6th". The passage sits in the commentary on Jupiter in the 12th house, and closes with the commentators' view that the 12th lord in the 12th should give the same results, and that a Jupiter meeting any of these conditions "can be very beneficial even in the 12th".
  • BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4, on the 12th house, lists among the conditions for expenses "on good accounts" the 12th lord in its own house. Sl. 5-6 says the 12th lord in the 6th or 8th brings trouble through expenses - the reverse of the Vipareeta reading for exactly the two placements Uttara Kalamrita names.
  • BPHS Ch. 24 is mixed. Sl. 138: the 12th lord in the 6th - enmity with one's own people. Sl. 140: in the 8th - the native "will always gain", speaks pleasantly and has good qualities. Sl. 144: in the 12th - heavy expenditure. Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7 adds that the 6th lord in the 6th together with the 12th lord in the 12th indicates long life.
  • Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, pp. 153-154 (page images), first classes exchanges among the 6th, 8th and 12th lords as inauspicious Dainya yogas, then records that some "call it a 'Vipareetha Raja Yoga'" when the lords aspect each other and are free of other lords' influence.

Where the texts and the engine part

For the 12th lord the corpus genuinely disagrees with itself. BPHS Ch. 23 favours the lord in its own house and disfavours the 6th and 8th; Ch. 24 favours the 8th and disfavours the 6th and 12th; Uttara Kalamrita favours the 6th and 8th and omits the 12th; the Bhrigu Sutras commentators add the 12th back. The engine takes the widest union - any of the three - and gives one reading for all: "A Vipareeta Raja Yoga: classically read as converting what would otherwise be a difficult house's energy into an unexpected source of gain, often most visible after periods of real struggle rather than as easy, steady fortune."

How rare it is

Vimala fired in 707 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 23.6 percent - the lowest of the three Vipareeta yogas (Sarala 773, Harsha 752), though all three sit near one in four. Within the 707, the 12th lord was in the 6th in 247, the 8th in 212 and its own 12th in 248.

Strict Uttara Kalamrita would keep only the 6th and 8th cases, 459 of the 707; BPHS Ch. 23 would keep only the 248 own-house cases as favourable. Vimala also turned up in two other worked examples on this site: the Malavya chart (Sun, 12th lord for Virgo, in the 6th) and the Sasa chart (Mercury, 12th lord for Cancer, in its own 12th). At this frequency, coincidences like that are to be expected.

Worked example: 10 January 1985, New Delhi

The first moment in the engine's walk with Vimala Yoga is 10 January 1985 at 08:37 IST, New Delhi - the same moment that opens the walk for Harsha and Sarala. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Capricorn at 17.6 degrees, so Sagittarius is the 12th sign.

  1. The 12th sign from Capricorn is Sagittarius; its lord is Jupiter.
  2. Jupiter is in Sagittarius - its own sign and the 12th house. That is a trika house, so Vimala Yoga forms. It is the own-house case: valid under the Bhrigu Sutras commentators' extension, outside the Uttara Kalamrita list as quoted.

The engine's sentence is "Jupiter, lord of your 12th house, sits in your 12th house - a trika (6th/8th/12th) lord placed in another trika house." Here the phrase "another trika house" is the loose wording noted above: Jupiter is in its own 12th, not another one.

The texts can now be applied by hand. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 counts a 12th lord in its own house among the conditions for spending on good accounts. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary - written, as it happens, about Jupiter in the 12th - says such a Jupiter can be beneficial even there. Against that: Jupiter is combust, 3.78 degrees past the Sun by the engine's figures; it also rules the 3rd; it shares the sign with Mercury, which rules the 9th; and the Moon, 7th lord, sits in the 8th - three strikes under the purity conditions in Advanced Predictive Astrology. All three trika lords are conjunct here, so Harsha and Sarala form too.

The engine's timing step would link Vimala to the Jupiter Mahadasha. It also lists Vasi, Kedara, Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga and Parivartana Yoga for this moment.

Vimala beside Harsha and Sarala

All three Vipareeta yogas apply the same test to different lords, and for no ascendant does one graha rule two of the three trika houses, so each yoga always concerns a different planet. What makes Vimala distinct is the house. The 12th is the house of the sign just behind the ascendant, and its lord is often a planet that also rules something important: a trikona for four ascendants, a kendra (the 7th) for Taurus and Scorpio, the ascendant itself for Aquarius. Harsha and Sarala raise the same question for their lords, but the texts' disagreement is widest for the 12th. Vimala should also be kept apart from planets simply occupying the 12th house: a crowded 12th with its lord placed elsewhere forms no Vimala, and an empty 12th whose lord sits in the 8th does.

What Vimala Yoga does not tell you

Vimala says where the 12th lord sits. Given how the texts divide over the same three placements, and how often the yoga occurs - nearly one chart in four - it is best treated as a reason to look carefully at the 12th lord: its dignity, its company, which other house it rules. It does not say you will gain, spend, travel or withdraw. Nor does it settle the textual dispute for you: whether you weight BPHS Ch. 23, BPHS Ch. 24 or Uttara Kalamrita, the same chart can read three different ways. The Mahadasha link is a timing convention, not a forecast.

To find your 12th lord and see whether Vimala, Harsha or Sarala form in your chart, run the yoga calculator. It names the lord and the house it found.

Questions about Vimala Yoga

What is Vimala Yoga?
It is the 12th-house member of the Vipareeta Raja Yoga group: the lord of the 12th house placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant.
Does the 12th lord in the 12th house count?
In this app, yes, following the Bhrigu Sutras commentators. Uttara Kalamrita as quoted in the corpus names only the 6th and 8th. The own-house case was 248 of the 707 Vimala moments in the sample.
Why does the engine say "another trika house" when the lord is in its own house?
The engine uses one sentence for every Vipareeta case. For a lord in its own trika house the phrase is loose; the detection is consistent with the reading the engine follows, but the wording does not fit that case.
Does BPHS support Vimala Yoga?
Not by name, and not uniformly. BPHS Ch. 23 favours the 12th lord in its own house and disfavours it in the 6th or 8th; Ch. 24 Sl. 140 favours the 8th. No single BPHS passage matches the Vipareeta rule.
How common is Vimala Yoga?
It fired in 707 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 23.6 percent - the least frequent of the three Vipareeta yogas in the sample.
For which ascendants is the 12th lord a pure 12th lord?
Only Leo, whose 12th lord is the Moon, and Virgo, whose 12th lord is the Sun; each luminary rules a single sign. For every other ascendant the 12th lord also rules a second house, sometimes a trikona or the ascendant itself, which the engine does not weigh.
Does a combust 12th lord cancel Vimala Yoga?
Not in the engine. In the sample 119 Vimala moments had a combust 12th lord, including the 1985 worked example, where Jupiter is combust.

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
