Sarala Yoga is the 8th-house member of the Vipareeta Raja Yoga group: the lord of the 8th placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. The rule as the engine codes it, the Uttara Kalamrita reading and its purity conditions, what BPHS says of each placement, frequency, and a 1985 chart.

In short

Sarala Yoga forms when the lord of the 8th house sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. It is the 8th-lord member of the Vipareeta Raja Yoga group this app detects, beside Harsha (6th lord) and Vimala (12th lord). It fired in 773 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (25.8 percent), the most of the three.

Sarala Yoga looks at the lord of your 8th house and asks one question: is that graha itself in the 6th, 8th or 12th? Those three are the dusthanas or trika houses, and the group of rules built on them goes by the name Vipareeta Raja Yoga, the "reversed" royal yoga. This app detects three members: Harsha for the 6th lord, Sarala for the 8th and Vimala for the 12th. Sarala is the one tied to the 8th, the house BPHS calls Randhr and treats at length under longevity, and in this app's sample it was the most frequent of the three. For what any yoga amounts to, see what a yoga in your chart means.

The rule: three steps from the ascendant

  1. Count eight signs from the ascendant in whole signs (the ascendant's own sign is the 1st). That sign is the 8th house.
  2. Take the sign's traditional lord - one of the seven visible grahas. Rahu and Ketu rule no sign in this scheme and can never be the lord.
  3. If that lord occupies the 6th, the 8th or the 12th house, report Sarala Yoga.

The engine's sentence follows a fixed pattern, for example "Sun, lord of your 8th house, sits in your 12th house - a trika (6th/8th/12th) lord placed in another trika house." The impact line is shared by all three Vipareeta yogas.

What the engine chose not to test

  • The 8th lord in the 8th counts. The Uttara Kalamrita rule quoted in the corpus gives the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th only; the Bhrigu Sutras commentators add the lord in its own house "on the analogy" of the rule, and the engine follows them. That case made up 266 of the 773 Sarala moments in the sample - about a third.
  • No purity conditions. The quoted rule requires the trika lords to be free of ties with other house lords, and Advanced Predictive Astrology's version adds that no other planet should sit in the trika houses. The engine checks neither.
  • Dual lordship is ignored. For some ascendants the 8th lord also rules a good house - for Aries and Libra ascendants it is the ascendant lord itself. The engine still treats it simply as the 8th lord.
  • Strength, combustion and retrograde motion are not considered. In the sample the 8th lord was combust in 117 and retrograde in 133 of the Sarala moments.

Two things stand out. Only for Sagittarius and Capricorn ascendants is the 8th lord a "pure" 8th lord, because the Moon and the Sun rule a single sign each; everywhere else the same graha carries a second house, sometimes a very good one. And the sample's split by lord follows the table: Venus 165, Saturn 160, Jupiter 130, Mars 123 and Mercury 117 each serve two ascendants, the Sun (52) and the Moon (26) one each.

What the classical texts say

None of the texts in this project's corpus uses the name Sarala - not BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Advanced Predictive Astrology, Daivajna Vallabha, or Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga pages (pp. 145-154). What they attest is the rule, under the name Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and BPHS's verdicts on each separate placement.

  • Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, pp. 117-118, quoting Uttara Kalamrita, opens with exactly Sarala's case: "Lord of 8th in 6/12". With the 6th and 12th lords' cases and the mutual-relation route, these "are expected to confer a Raja Yoga or a higher order", provided the lords are unrelated to other houses' lords and no other planet sits in the trika houses.
  • The Bhrigu Sutras commentary, p. 87, gives the same Uttarakalamrita rule with "(a) lord of the 8th occupying the 12th or 6th" first, and adds the commentators' view that the 8th lord in the 8th "should also give the same results".
  • BPHS Ch. 24 gives the three Sarala placements separately and they differ sharply. Sl. 90: the 8th lord in the 6th - victory over enemies, with illness. Sl. 92: in the 8th itself - the native "will be long-lived", or of medium life if the lord is weak. Sl. 96: in the 12th - spending on wrong deeds and a short life, "more so" with a malefic there.
  • BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 2 adds that the 8th lord joined with the ascendant lord or a malefic in the 8th points to a short life. It is reported here only as the text's claim; this app makes no longevity statements.
  • Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, pp. 153-154 (page images), calls exchanges among the 6th, 8th and 12th lords Dainya yogas, inauspicious, then notes that some, given mutual aspect and no influence from other lords, "call it a 'Vipareetha Raja Yoga'".

Where the texts and the engine part

BPHS's own house-lord slokas do not support a uniform reading of the three Sarala placements: the 8th lord in the 8th is promising for longevity there, the 8th lord in the 12th is not. The Vipareeta rule smooths that over with a single positive reading, and the engine applies it to all three placements without the purity conditions. Its sentence reads: "A Vipareeta Raja Yoga: classically read as converting what would otherwise be a difficult house's energy into an unexpected source of gain, often most visible after periods of real struggle rather than as easy, steady fortune." The engine's wording does not mention longevity, which BPHS ties most closely to the 8th.

How rare it is

Sarala fired in 773 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 25.8 percent. Harsha came to 752 and Vimala to 707, so all three sit near the one-in-four rate you would expect from a rule that accepts three houses out of twelve. Within the 773, the 8th lord was in the 6th in 276, the 8th in 266 and the 12th in 231.

If you applied the Uttara Kalamrita list strictly - 6th or 12th only - the 266 own-house cases would drop out, leaving 507. The purity conditions would cut the number further, but the engine does not compute them, so this page gives no figure for that.

Worked example: 10 January 1985, New Delhi

The first moment in the engine's walk with Sarala Yoga is 10 January 1985 at 08:37 IST, New Delhi - also the first moment for Harsha and Vimala. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator. The ascendant is Capricorn at 17.6 degrees; counting on, Leo is the 8th sign.

Positions: engine-facts.mjs sarala-yoga, run 2026-10-13. Rahu Taurus 1.02 (5th), Ketu Scorpio 1.02 (11th). Lordships derived from the signs.
  1. The 8th sign from Capricorn is Leo. Its lord is the Sun, and since the Sun rules no other sign, it is a pure 8th lord here.
  2. The Sun is in Sagittarius, the 12th house. That is a trika house, so Sarala Yoga forms - and it is the "8th lord in the 12th" case that Uttara Kalamrita names outright, not the extended own-house case.

The engine reports: "Sun, lord of your 8th house, sits in your 12th house - a trika (6th/8th/12th) lord placed in another trika house." The engine grades the Sun Neutral in Sagittarius, but dignity plays no part in the rule; an exalted or debilitated 8th lord in the 12th would be reported in exactly the same words.

Now the purity conditions, by hand. In favour: the Sun shares the 12th with Mercury (6th lord) and Jupiter (12th lord), so all three trika lords are conjunct, which the quoted rule counts as a route of its own. Against: Mercury also rules the 9th and Jupiter the 3rd, so the Sun is tied by conjunction to lords of other houses; and the Moon, lord of the 7th, sits in the 8th, which Advanced Predictive Astrology's version says should hold no other planet. A strict reader would decline this Sarala. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 96 would also read the 8th lord in the 12th unfavourably. The engine, applying the inclusive rule, reports it.

For timing, the engine points Sarala to the lord's own period - here the Sun Mahadasha. It also lists Vasi, Kedara, Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga and Parivartana Yoga for the same moment.

Sarala beside Harsha and Vimala

The three yogas run the same test and differ only in the lord they test. That makes the dual-lordship question sharper for Sarala than for its siblings: for Aries and Libra ascendants the 8th lord is the ascendant lord, so Sarala there means the chart's own ruler sits in a trika house - a placement most readings would not call fortunate, whatever the Vipareeta label. For Gemini the 8th lord, Saturn, also rules the 9th; for Leo, Jupiter also rules the 5th. In those charts the 8th lord is also a trikona lord, and Sarala's placement takes that trikona lord into a trika house as well. The engine does not weigh these combinations; it is worth weighing them yourself.

What Sarala Yoga does not tell you

Sarala records where the 8th lord sits. It says nothing about longevity in this app, it does not test the conditions the classical rule attaches, and BPHS's own reading of the same placements is mixed. At one chart in four, it is a prompt to look at the 8th lord - whichever graha that is for you - and not a verdict. The Mahadasha link is a timing convention, not a forecast.

It also helps to separate Sarala from things that sound similar. A planet that merely occupies the 8th house is not Sarala; the rule is about the 8th house's lord, wherever the 8th's occupants are. An 8th lord that is exalted or strong in a good house is not Sarala either - the yoga needs the lord inside the trika group. And Sarala is not a dosha: the engine files it among the yogas, with a reading of gain after difficulty, not among afflictions. Placing the 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is, by construction, about a quarter of all charts.

To find your 8th lord and see whether it forms Sarala, run the yoga calculator. It names the lord and the house it occupies.

Questions about Sarala Yoga

What is Sarala Yoga?
It is the 8th-house member of the Vipareeta Raja Yoga group: the lord of the 8th house placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant.
Does the 8th lord in the 8th count as Sarala Yoga?
In this app, yes. Uttara Kalamrita, as quoted in the corpus, names the 6th and 12th; the Bhrigu Sutras commentators extend the rule to the 8th, and the engine follows them. It was 266 of the 773 Sarala moments in the sample.
Does Sarala Yoga say anything about lifespan?
Not in this app. BPHS ties the 8th lord to longevity in Ch. 19 and Ch. 24, and its readings of the three placements differ, but the engine makes no longevity statement.
How common is Sarala Yoga?
It fired in 773 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 25.8 percent - slightly more than Harsha (752) and Vimala (707).
Is Sarala Yoga found in BPHS?
Not by name. No text in this project's corpus uses the name Sarala. The rule appears as Vipareeta Raja Yoga in Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras commentary, both quoting Uttara Kalamrita.
Can Sarala form for an Aries ascendant?
Yes. Mars rules both the 1st and the 8th for Aries, so Mars in the 6th, 8th or 12th forms Sarala. The engine reads Mars only as the 8th lord here; that it is also the ascendant lord is for the reader to weigh.
Why did the Moon form Sarala so rarely in the sample?
The Moon is the 8th lord only for a Sagittarius ascendant, one ascendant out of twelve, and the sample counted 26 Sarala moments with the Moon as lord. Planets that rule two signs serve two ascendants each and so appear far more often.

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
