In short

Vipareeta Raja yoga, the "reversed" royal yoga, forms when the lord of a difficult house (the 6th, 8th or 12th) is itself placed in one of those houses. The rule is quoted from Uttara Kalamrita in Advanced Predictive Astrology and in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary. This app reports it as Harsha, Sarala or Vimala yoga.

What the term means

Vipareeta means "reversed" or "contrary". The 6th, 8th and 12th houses are the dusthanas (also called trika houses), read as houses of difficulty. Vipareeta Raja yoga is the idea that when the lord of one such house is itself placed in another, the two difficulties cancel and the combination turns favourable. It has three named forms, after the house whose lord is involved: Harsha (6th lord), Sarala (8th lord) and Vimala (12th lord).

Where the term comes from

A search of the corpus finds no Vipareeta yoga in BPHS or Saravali. The rule appears in later works that quote Uttara Kalamrita. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, pp. 117-118) gives it as the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th, the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th, the 12th lord in the 6th or 8th, or these lords linked by conjunction, aspect or exchange, provided they are not related to the lords of other houses; the book applies it across its case studies. The commentary to Jupiter in the 12th in the Bhrigu Sutras (Sutras 54-58) states the same rule and quotes the same source.

How this app computes it

  • For each of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the engine finds the lord of the sign on that house (whole-sign houses from the Lagna).
  • If that lord sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th, the yoga is reported: Harsha for the 6th lord, Sarala for the 8th, Vimala for the 12th.
  • Two differences from the quoted rule are worth knowing. The engine also counts a lord sitting in its own house (the 6th lord in the 6th), and it does not test the condition that the lords stay free of links to other house lords.

A small illustration

With Pisces rising, Libra is the 8th house and Venus its lord. In the chart of 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Venus sits in Aquarius, the 12th, so the engine reports Sarala Yoga. Because the test is broad, these yogas are common: of the 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 used by this site's tools, Harsha formed in 752, Sarala in 773, Vimala in 707, and at least one of the three in 1,697.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
