Parivartana defined: two grahas each sitting in a sign the other rules, where BPHS uses the exchange, and how this app detects and labels it.

In short

Parivartana is a mutual exchange of signs: graha A sits in a sign ruled by graha B while B sits in a sign ruled by A. BPHS names such exchanges in several yoga rules. This app flags it as Parivarthana Yoga among the seven classical grahas and labels it favourable or mixed by the houses the two rule.

What the term means

Parivartana means "exchange". In a chart it is the case where two grahas each occupy a sign owned by the other: Mars in a Saturn sign while Saturn is in a Mars sign, for example. Each graha is then read as linked to the other's houses, as if the two had swapped places. The usual spelling in this app's yoga list is Parivarthana.

Where the term comes from

BPHS does not define the exchange in a chapter of its own; it uses it inside other rules. Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 lists "an exchange between a Lord of a Kendr and a Lord of a Kon" among the links that make a yoga. Ch. 39 Sl. 6-7 gives a Maha Raj Yog when the Lagna lord and the 5th lord exchange signs, and Ch. 36 Sl. 25-26 a Khadg Yog for the 2nd and 9th lords. Advanced Predictive Astrology, a modern case-study book, uses the Sanskrit word itself, describing "a good Parivarthana" of the 8th and 11th lords as easing the 8th lord's difficulty.

How this app uses it

  • Every pair of the seven classical grahas is tested; Rahu and Ketu own no signs in this app and are left out.
  • An exchange is flagged as Parivarthana Yoga when each graha sits in one of the other's own signs.
  • It is labelled favourable when both grahas rule a kendra or trikona from the Lagna, and mixed otherwise, to be weighed against the rest of the chart.
  • Because house lordship needs an Ascendant, the yoga is checked only when a birth time is given.

A small illustration

In the chart for 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Mars is in Aquarius (a Saturn sign) and Saturn is in Scorpio (a Mars sign), so the engine reports Parivarthana Yoga for Mars and Saturn. With Pisces rising, Mars rules the 2nd and 9th and Saturn the 11th and 12th; Saturn rules no kendra or trikona, so the label is mixed.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
