In short
Swakshetra means a graha in a sign it rules: the Sun in Leo, the Moon in Cancer, Mars in Aries or Scorpio, and so on. This app labels it "Own sign" and gives it 7.5 of 10 for position, below exaltation and Moolatrikona and above a friend's sign. Where a sign holds a Moolatrikona band, only the degrees outside it count as own sign.
What the term means
Swakshetra is "own field": a graha placed in a sign it rules. The Sun rules Leo and the Moon Cancer; Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Mercury Gemini and Virgo, Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces, Venus Taurus and Libra, Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius. These are the same rulerships that make a graha a house lord, so a planet in its own sign is always also the lord of the house it sits in.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 4 names a ruler as it describes each sign. Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 then divides some of those signs: where a graha has a Moolatrikona band, "the rest" of the sign is "his own Bhava". Sl. 59-60 rate a graha in its own sign as "half beneficial", below exaltation and Moolatrikona. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24 covers the same ground under the heading "Swakshetra, Mlatrikona etc.".
How this app uses it
- The engine checks exaltation, Moolatrikona and debilitation first, then own sign. So the Sun from 20 degrees of Leo on, and Mercury from 20 degrees of Virgo on, read "Own sign"; earlier degrees take the higher label.
- "Own sign" is worth 7.5 of 10 for position in the app's Shad Bala. In a 1990-05-15, 10:30 IST Mumbai chart, Saturn in Capricorn reads "its own sign in Capricorn, kendra house (7th)" and scores 12.13 of 20, Medium.
- Own sign in a Kendra is one of the routes to a Panchamahapurusha yoga, and for that chart the engine reports Sasa Yoga from the Saturn in the 7th.
- Parivartana is two grahas each in the other's own sign. The Graha Pada calculation counts to a graha's own sign, taking the nearer one when it owns two.
