In short
The Panchamahapurusha yogas are five yogas, one each for Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, formed when that graha sits in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the Lagna. BPHS Ch. 75 and Saravali Ch. 37 both give the rule. This app tests all five whenever the birth time gives an Ascendant.
What the term means
Pancha-maha-purusha means "five great persons". The name covers five separate yogas: Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Sasa (Saturn). Each forms on the same two conditions: the graha is strong by sign, in its own sign or its exaltation, and it stands in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Lagna. The Sun, the Moon and the lunar nodes have no yoga in this set.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 states the rule: Mangal, Budh, Guru, Sukr and Sani in their own or exaltation sign, in a kendra to the Lagna, give the five yogas, and those born with them are called Panchmahapurushas. The rest of the chapter describes each native's appearance in detail. Saravali Ch. 37 credits the teaching to Sri Devakirti Raja (Sl. 1) and gives the same rule in Sl. 2: own houses or exaltation signs "identical with Angles". The two texts agree on the condition.
How this app computes it
- For each of the five grahas, detectYogas() asks the engine's dignity function for the graha's dignity. A label of Exalted, Moolatrikona or Own sign counts as strong by sign.
- The house is the whole-sign house from the Lagna; it must be 1, 4, 7 or 10.
- Both conditions together form the yoga. The result names the graha, its dignity and its house, and carries a short classical temperament note.
- The physical measurements and other details in BPHS Ch. 75 are not reproduced; the engine's notes record that choice.
A small illustration
The chart of 5 February 1987, 09:48 IST, New Delhi has Pisces rising and Jupiter at 0.6 degrees of Pisces, its own sign, in the 1st house, so the engine reports Hamsa Yoga. These yogas are not rare: in the 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 used by this site's tools, Hamsa alone fired in 246, and at least one of the five fired in 1,026.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
