Raja yoga defined: combinations linking the lords of kendras and trikonas, what BPHS Ch. 39 and Ch. 41 say, and the four Raj Yoga rules this app actually tests.

In short

Raja yoga is the family name for combinations the classical texts read as a rise in standing, most often a link between the lord of a kendra and the lord of a trikona. BPHS gives many competing rules for it. This app tests four specific ones and reports which grahas formed each.

What the term means

Raja yoga ("royal yoga", often written Raj Yoga) is not one rule but a family of them. What they share is a link between the houses the texts treat as pillars of the chart, the kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th), and the houses they treat as fortunate, the trikonas (1st, 5th, 9th), usually through the grahas that rule them.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 39 opens its Raj Yogas as those "making one entitled to royal honour" and says in Sl. 3-5 that they are judged from both the Karakamsa Lagna and the natal Lagna, pairing the Atma Karak with the Putr Karak and the Lagna lord with the 5th lord. Ch. 41 Sl. 28 gives the general principle: kendras are "Vishnu Sthanas", konas "Lakshmi Sthanas", and a kendra lord in relationship with a kona lord forms a Raj Yog. Saravali gives its own long Ch. 35 on Raja yogas. The rules in these chapters are many and do not reduce to one test.

How this app computes it

  • Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga (BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 28): a kendra lord and a trikona lord in the same house or in mutual aspect. All qualifying pairs are listed in one entry.
  • Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga: the 9th and 10th lords together in one house that is itself a kendra or trikona.
  • Raja Yoga (5th and 9th lords): the two trikona lords in the same house, a rule the engine takes from Jyotisha-Siddhanta-Sara.
  • Argala Raj Yoga: unobstructed argala on the 1st, 5th and 9th houses at once.
  • Not attempted: the general rules of BPHS Ch. 39 and Saravali Ch. 35. The engine's notes call them too many and too competing to test with confidence.

A note on frequency

"Raj Yoga" sounds rare; by these rules it often is not. In the 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 used by this site's tools, the Kendra-Kona rule formed in 2,511, Dharma-Karmadhipati in 342 and the 5th-and-9th-lord rule in 331. In the chart of 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the engine reports a Kendra-Kona link (Mercury and the Moon together) and an Argala Raj Yoga.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
