In short

A Yogakaraka is a graha that, for a given rising sign, is singled out as a special source of good results, typically because it rules both a Kendra and a Trikona. BPHS Ch. 34 names them sign by sign. This app looks up that list for your Ascendant and shows each Yogakaraka with the sign and house it occupies.

What the term means

Yogakaraka means "maker of yoga". The role comes from lordship, not from a planet's nature, so it changes with the Lagna. The usual reason is that one graha rules both a Kendra and a Trikona. For Taurus rising, Saturn rules Capricorn (the 9th) and Aquarius (the 10th); for Cancer rising, Mars rules Scorpio (the 5th) and Aries (the 10th). Some rising signs have none.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 says that a graha owning both a Kona and a Kendra proves "specially a Yog Karak", and Sl. 17 extends the idea to Rahu or Ketu in a Kendra linked to such a lord. Sl. 19-44 then go through the twelve rising signs and name the Yogakarakas for eight of them. The word has a second, older use in BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 and Saravali Ch. 6: planets in mutual angles while in own, exalted or friendly signs are called "Yog Karakas" there. This app uses only the Ch. 34 sense.

  • The engine looks up your rising sign and reports each Yogakaraka with the sign and house it actually occupies. For a 1990-05-15, 10:30 IST Mumbai chart (Cancer rising) that is Mars, in Aquarius in the 8th. For a rising sign with none, the Kundali says so.
  • The list says which planet holds the role. How well that planet can deliver is a separate question, answered by its dignity, house and strength elsewhere in the reading.
