Sade Sati is Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon. This guide gives the exact rule this app runs, the engine's dates for all twelve Moon signs to 2049, an Aries-Moon worked example, and which classical texts do and do not name it.

In short

Sade Sati is the stretch of years when transiting Saturn occupies the sign before your natal Moon sign, the Moon sign itself, or the sign after it. In this app's engine one full passage lasts between about 7.1 and 8.2 years, often with retrograde pauses. BPHS does not name it; the term comes from the later transit tradition.

This page treats Sade Sati as this app treats every named rule: as a statement about positions that can be checked, with the engine's dates for each Moon sign and the exact standing of the idea in the books this app draws on. If you want your own answer for today, the Sade Sati calculator gives it from a birth date; the long-form underneath that calculator covers the 45-degree orb variant and birth-time sensitivity, which are not repeated here.

What Sade Sati is

Sade Sati (literally "seven and a half") names the years during which transiting Saturn, Shani, moves through three consecutive signs counted from your natal Moon sign: the 12th sign from it (the one before), the 1st (the Moon sign itself) and the 2nd (the one after). Saturn takes roughly two and a half years to cross a sign, so three signs make roughly seven and a half years, which is where the name comes from. It is a rule of Gochara, the reading of transits from the natal Moon, and the Moon sign used is the Janma Rashi, not the ascendant.

  • It depends on one input from your chart: the sign the Moon was in at birth. Twelve Moon signs means twelve schedules, and everyone born with the Moon in the same sign shares the same Sade Sati dates.
  • It recurs, because Saturn returns to the same sign after roughly thirty years. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 311) puts it as occurring "once in 30 yrs".
  • It is not a natal dosha in the way Mangal Dosha is. Nothing in the birth chart is "afflicted". It is a calendar window, and like every calendar window it opens and closes on dates.

The three signs are traditionally called three dhaiyas (two-and-a-half-year portions). This app labels them in the engine's own words: "Rising phase (first dhaiya)" for the 12th, "Peak phase (second dhaiya) - Saturn transiting the natal Moon sign itself" for the 1st, and "Setting phase (third dhaiya)" for the 2nd. The sentence shown beside any active phase is the same for all three: "A classical ~7.5-year period of intensified pressure and restructuring - traditionally read as a time to consolidate rather than expand, not as an omen."

How this app computes Sade Sati

The function is computeSadeSati() in the server's kundaliEngine.js. It takes two sign numbers, the natal Moon's and transiting Saturn's, and counts from one to the other inclusively: offset = ((Saturn sign - Moon sign + 12) mod 12) + 1, so that 1 means the same sign. An offset of 12 returns the rising phase, 1 the peak, 2 the setting phase. Every other offset returns "not active". There is no orb, no degree test and no weighting by Saturn's strength; the whole decision is a comparison of two whole signs.

Both signs are sidereal, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Moon sign comes from your birth moment; Saturn's sign comes from the moment you ask. That makes the calculator's result a snapshot of one day. The dates in this page are the other half of the picture: the moments at which Saturn's sidereal sign changes in this engine, found by scanning its own positions. They are given in UTC, to the day. Near an ingress they can differ from other software by hours to a day or two, because positions are computed from published algorithms rather than looked up, and because Saturn moves only about two arcminutes a day on average (the engine's own figure is 913 days per sign). A small difference in position becomes a visible difference in date.

Retrograde re-entries are real, not glitches

Saturn turns retrograde for several months every year. When that happens near a sign boundary, Saturn can enter a sign, fall back into the previous one, and enter again months later. The engine's dates show each crossing separately. In Sade Sati terms this means a period can start, pause, and start again, or a phase can be revisited after it seemed to have ended.

The same file runs two sibling checks with the same counting rule. computeAshtamaSani() returns Ardha Ashtama Sani for Saturn in the 4th sign from the Moon and Ashtama Sani for the 8th; they have their own pages, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani, and their own calculator. Because the 4th and 8th can never coincide with the 12th, 1st or 2nd, a person is in at most one of these three named Saturn periods at a time.

What the texts say, and what BPHS does not

A plain finding first. A search of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra translation in this app's source library for "sade", "seven and a half" and "gochar" finds no passage that names Sade Sati. The same search of Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras finds none either. BPHS does not name Sade Sati. Any page that says Parashara described it is going beyond the text this app uses.

What BPHS does say about Saturn in transit is narrower and more technical, and it does not count from the Moon in the Sade Sati way.

  • BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 70-72 sets up the AshtakaVarg table and says that when a graha passes in transit through the Bhavas marked with a dot in its own table it gives unfavourable results, and through the others favourable ones. The Ashtakavarga is built from the whole chart, not from the Moon alone.
  • BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44 applies that to Saturn directly: results are favourable when Saturn transits signs with a larger number of Rekhas in its own AshtakaVarg, and evil when it transits signs with more dots. By this rule two people with the same Moon sign, in the same phase, need not be in the same situation.
  • BPHS Ch. 57 Sl. 24-27, on the Venus sub-period within Saturn's Mahadasha, adds that "if Sani is favourable in transit" the sub-period gives Raj Yog effects. Transit is read there as a modifier of a running dasha, not as a stand-alone period.

Saravali, in its AshtakaVarga chapter (Ch. 53 Sl. 1), says the Yavanacharyas explained the AshtakaVarga precisely to evaluate the effects of transits in daily life, and Sl. 9-10 repeats the principle: transits through signs with more benefic dots are auspicious, through fewer, inauspicious. The same sloka adds a detail that matters for anyone watching ingress dates. It says the Sun and Mars are effective at the beginning of a sign, Jupiter and Venus in the middle, and Saturn and the Moon at the end. On Saravali's reading, then, the day Saturn crosses a boundary is not the moment its effect in that sign is strongest.

Where the name does appear

The engine's own source is S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology, Ch. XXXI on Gochara, pp. 117-118. That book is not in the text corpus; the engine comment cites it and quotes its description of the period as "immense troubles, worries, quarrels and impediments". The comment then records the editorial choice this app made: to present it "plainly as a named classical period, not a fear-based warning".

The one corpus book that discusses Sade Sati by name is the modern Advanced Predictive Astrology, Vol. II, Ch. 7 "Research on Transits" (pp. 311-313). It defines the period as Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, and it qualifies it in the same sentence: the rule applies "unless Saturn is a yogakaraka" for the chart and well placed with benefic association or aspect. It also lists hardships by stage of life and names public figures with the events of their Sade Satis, deaths among them. This page does not repeat that list; it is anecdote, not evidence.

The same chapter is more balanced than its reputation. On the page before the Sade Sati section it says Saturn "gives good results in 3/6/11th from Moon" and that its arrival in the 10th from the Moon "is a period of gain". After the section it says that once Saturn enters the 3rd sign from the Moon, the first sign after Sade Sati, a person turns "a new leaf". And it says that for people whose Moon is placed with Saturn at birth, the period "does not make much difference".

Remedies

Writing on Sade Sati is often followed by remedies. Several books in the corpus prescribe propitiation for various placements (BPHS Ch. 57 Sl. 22-23, for one, gives a charity for Ketu). This app prescribes none for Sade Sati or anything else: no mantras, gemstones, pujas or donations.

How long a Sade Sati really lasts: every Moon sign

Seven and a half is a round number. The table below takes each Moon sign's current or next full Sade Sati from this engine's Saturn ingresses and measures it. "Span" runs from the first day Saturn enters the 12th sign from the Moon to the last day it leaves the 2nd. "Days inside" counts only the days Saturn is actually in one of the three signs; where it is smaller than the span, a retrograde carried Saturn out of the window and back again.

This app's computation: transit-ingresses.mjs saturn and engine-facts.mjs sade-sati, run 2026-10-13. Sidereal (Lahiri), UTC, to the day. Sagittarius and Capricorn show their most recent completed period, because the next one runs past 2049.

Three patterns stand out. First, no Sade Sati in this table lasts exactly seven and a half years: the spans run from 7.06 to 8.21 years. In these cycles the Aries-to-Leo Moons get the shorter periods (7.06 to 7.21 years) and Virgo-to-Pisces the longer ones (7.97 to 8.21). Second, ten of the twelve have at least one pause. Third, the same Moon sign does not get the same shape twice, as the worked example shows.

On 13 October 2026, Saturn is in Pisces in this engine (from 29 March 2025 to 2 June 2027). That puts three Moon signs inside Sade Sati: Aries in the rising phase, Pisces at the peak and Aquarius in the setting phase. Saturn's passage through each sign has its own page, starting with Saturn transit in Pisces and continuing with Saturn transit in Aries and Saturn transit in Taurus.

Worked example: an Aries Moon across two Sade Satis

Take a natal Moon in Aries. The 12th sign from it is Pisces, the 1st is Aries and the 2nd is Taurus. The engine's current answer for this Moon sign, on 13 October 2026, is offset 12: "Rising phase (first dhaiya)". Here is every stay of Saturn in those three signs during the present cycle, in order, with the phase the calculator would show on any day inside it.

Engine output (engine-facts.mjs sade-sati, Moon sign 0 = Aries; transit-ingresses.mjs saturn), run 2026-10-13. Day counts are date arithmetic on those rows.

Read down the right-hand column: rising, peak, rising, peak, setting, peak, setting. Saturn touches Aries for 141 days and retreats into Pisces for 125 before settling; at the next boundary it spends 61 days in Taurus and 192 back in Aries.

Add the stays by sign and the three phases come out unequal: 920 days with Saturn in Pisces (rising), 864 in Aries (peak) and 836 in Taurus (setting), 2,620 days in all, from 29 March 2025 to 30 May 2032. Because every retrograde in this cycle shuffles Saturn between two of the three signs rather than out of them, the Aries period has no pause: the calculator says "active" on every one of those 2,620 days.

The previous Aries cycle, for contrast

The ingress table reaches back to 1990, which covers the Aries Moon's previous Sade Sati completely. It had a different shape.

Saturn inFrom (UTC)To (UTC)DaysPhase for an Aries Moon

This time the period started, stopped for 194 days, and restarted; and after it seemed to have ended in July 2002, it returned for 93 days in early 2003. Its span was 7.85 years with 2,506 days actually inside the window. The middle was a clean 782-day block. Two consecutive Aries-Moon Sade Satis thus differ in length, breaks and phase order; "seven and a half years in three equal parts" describes neither.

The worked example shows only what the rule computes. It says nothing about what any Aries-Moon person experienced in 1995-2003 or will experience in 2025-2032, and the engine does not claim to. To read Saturn's position against your whole chart rather than the Moon alone, the Gochar calculator grades all nine grahas from your Moon, and the Ashtakavarga calculator gives the BPHS tables described above.

Where Sade Sati meets the app's other Saturn rules

Sade Sati is one of several Saturn-from-the-Moon rules in the engine, and they do not all agree.

The 2nd sign: setting phase here, favourable in Gochar

The Gochar calculator reads every graha by Kannan's transit rules (Ch. XXXI pp. 117-118, as quoted in the engine). For malefics, Saturn included, those rules call the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon good and the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th bad. So the Gochar screen marks Saturn in the 2nd from your Moon as "classically a supportive transit position for Saturn from your Moon", while the Sade Sati screen marks the same day as the setting phase. Both are faithful to their rule. The 12th and 1st are testing in both; the 2nd is where the two traditions part, and this app shows both readings rather than choosing one.

The peak is the one position Kannan singles out

The engine also keeps a short table, from the same Kannan page, of single positions the source calls intensified: one per graha, counted from the Moon. Saturn's entry is the 1st, the Moon sign itself. That is the peak phase, which the app's risk scoring also weights on its own.

Dasha and natal Saturn

Advanced Predictive Astrology treats a running Saturn Mahadasha together with Sade Sati as the heavier combination, and BPHS Ch. 57 reads transit as a modifier inside a dasha. The Sade Sati calculator does neither: it reads transits only. Your running periods are on the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, and Saturn's natal role, including whether it is a yogakaraka for your ascendant, is covered in Saturn in Vedic astrology.

What Sade Sati does not tell you

The house view on doshas, set out in Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not and Kaal Sarp Dosha explained, applies here too: a named rule is a description of positions, not a verdict on a life. Specifically:

  • It does not say what will happen. The engine returns a phase and one general sentence. Nothing in a two-sign comparison encodes your dasha, your ascendant, your age or your circumstances.
  • It does not weigh Saturn's condition. The exceptions the sources make - Saturn as yogakaraka, Saturn well aspected, the Moon with Saturn at birth, a favourable Ashtakavarga - are not tested by the Sade Sati check.
  • It is not more precise than its inputs. If your Moon was near a sign edge at birth, a few hours of birth time can change the Moon sign and so every date on this page. Check your Moon sign first with the Moon sign calculator or a full birth chart.
  • Its dates are this app's. They are computed, sidereal with Lahiri, in UTC. Other software, or another ayanamsa, can shift an ingress by hours or days, more when Saturn is nearly stationary.
  • It is not unique to you. Everyone born with the Moon in your sign shares the same window.
  • It is not a reason to buy anything. No remedy is needed to read a calendar, and this app offers none.

For Saturn's passage through each sign, see the Saturn transit in Aquarius page and its neighbours. For how the Moon sign itself is fixed, see Moon sign and nakshatra. The term itself is defined briefly in the glossary entry Sade Sati, and Vakri explains the retrograde motion behind every pause above. How positions are computed is on the methodology page.

Is Sade Sati mentioned in BPHS?
Not in the translation this app uses. A search for "sade", "seven and a half" and "gochar" finds no passage naming it, and Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not name it either. BPHS reads Saturn's transit through its Ashtakavarga (Ch. 66 Sl. 70-72, Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44). The name appears in later transit writing, such as Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology and Advanced Predictive Astrology.
Does Sade Sati really last seven and a half years?
Approximately. In this engine the current or next full Sade Sati for each Moon sign spans between 7.06 and 8.21 years from first entry to final exit, and in ten of the twelve the period pauses at least once while Saturn retrogrades out of the window.
Which Moon signs are in Sade Sati now?
On 13 October 2026, with Saturn in Pisces in this engine (29 March 2025 to 2 June 2027): Aries in the rising phase, Pisces at the peak and Aquarius in the setting phase. Dates are this app's computation, in UTC.
Can a Sade Sati end and then start again?
Yes, when Saturn retrogrades across a boundary. For an Aries Moon the 1995-2003 period paused for 194 days in 1995-1996, and after Saturn left Taurus in July 2002 it came back from 6 January to 9 April 2003.
Is the middle phase always the hardest?
The engine calls it the peak because Saturn is then on the Moon sign itself, and Kannan, as quoted in the engine, singles out Saturn in the 1st from the Moon. Other schools disagree; the calculator's long-form reproduces a North Indian table that assigns the adverse part by Moon sign.
Why does the Gochar calculator call Saturn in my 2nd favourable while Sade Sati says setting phase?
Because they apply different rules. Kannan's Gochara rules, used by the Gochar calculator, call the 2nd from the Moon a good position for a malefic; Sade Sati counts the 2nd as its last phase. The app shows both rather than silently choosing.
Do I need my birth time?
Only to be sure of your Moon sign. The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, so on some birth dates the time decides it. The Moon sign calculator shows whether your date is one of them.
Does the app recommend remedies for Sade Sati?
No. Some books prescribe propitiation for Saturn and other grahas; this app prescribes no mantras, gemstones, pujas or donations for Sade Sati or any other result.
Now on yourself

Sade Sati

The classical Saturn period - the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the natal Moon.

A birth time is optional. Without one this is read at local noon on your birth date - and the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day, so add the time if you know it.

No place is asked for on this page, so the time is read as Indian Standard Time (IST). Born outside India? Run it on its own page, where you can add the place.

This date is sent only to compute the answer. Nothing is stored, no account is created, and no email is asked for.
