In short

Sade Sati is the period when transiting Saturn moves through the sign before the natal Moon, the Moon's own sign and the sign after it. This app flags it by whole signs and names the phase: rising, peak or setting. BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this site's corpus do not name it; Advanced Predictive Astrology does.

What the term means

Sade Sati is a named transit of Saturn. It covers the time Saturn spends in three consecutive signs: the 12th from the natal Moon sign, the Moon sign itself and the 2nd from it. The engine's note gives its length as about 7.5 years, three signs at the roughly 913 days Saturn spends in each in the engine's table. Each of the three signs is called a phase, or dhaiya.

Where the term comes from

The older texts in this site's corpus do not use the term: a search of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras finds no passage naming Sade Sati. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, in its chapter on transits) does. It says Sade Sati "occurs once in 30 yrs" when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, makes an exception where Saturn is a well-placed yogakaraka, and reports a view that it should be measured from 45 degrees before the natal Moon to 45 degrees after it. Its descriptions of the period are bleak; this app reports the period without them.

How this app computes it

  • The engine counts the transiting Saturn sign from the natal Moon sign. The 12th is the rising phase (first dhaiya), the 1st the peak (second dhaiya), the 2nd the setting phase (third dhaiya); any other count means Sade Sati is not active.
  • It works by whole signs, not by the 45-degree measure the modern book reports.
  • The engine's own comment presents it "as a named classical period, not a fear-based warning", and the reading says so.
  • The same calculator also checks Saturn in the 4th and 8th from the Moon (Ashtama Sani). Without a birth time the Moon can change sign during the birth day, and the calculator says when that changes the answer.

A small illustration

For a natal Moon in Sagittarius (the chart of 19 January 1985, New Delhi), Sade Sati is Saturn in Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn. On 13 October 2026 the engine places Saturn in Pisces, the 4th from that Moon, so it returns Sade Sati as not active and reports Ardha Ashtama Sani instead.

Now on yourself

Sade Sati

The classical Saturn period - the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the natal Moon.

A birth time is optional. Without one this is read at local noon on your birth date - and the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day, so add the time if you know it.

No place is asked for on this page, so the time is read as Indian Standard Time (IST). Born outside India? Run it on its own page, where you can add the place.

This date is sent only to compute the answer. Nothing is stored, no account is created, and no email is asked for.
