In short
Chandra Lagna is the Moon's sign used as the 1st house, with the other houses counted from it. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 11 tells the reader to apply the Lagna's reading from the Moon as well. This app counts transits from the Moon's sign, and falls back to it for house counts when there is no birth time, saying so each time.
What the term means
Chandra Lagna means "the Moon as Lagna". The sign holding the Moon is treated as the 1st house, the next sign as the 2nd, and so on, exactly as houses are counted from the rising sign in the ordinary chart. It is a second frame of reference beside the Lagna, not a replacement for it, and the house a graha falls in usually differs between the two.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 11 states the principle: effects should be judged from the Moon too, as they are from the Lagna. Saravali's chapter on the tenth house (Ch. 33) reads several combinations as grahas "in the 10th from the Moon" or from the Janma Rasi. The phrase "Chandra lagna" itself occurs once in this project's library, in Daivajna Vallabha's rules for travel queries (Sl. 7), which count the 2nd and 12th "from Lagna or Chandra lagna".
How this app uses it
- Transits are always counted from the natal Moon's sign: the Gochara reading for all nine grahas, and Saturn's Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani.
- Without a birth time there is no Lagna. The daily reading, the muhurat scorer and the relationship reading then count houses from the Moon's sign and label that basis, because it is a different count from "your Nth house".
- In the 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi chart the Lagna is Pisces and the Moon is in Sagittarius. Counted from the Lagna the Moon is in the 10th and Saturn in the 9th; counted from the Moon, Saturn is in the 12th and Jupiter in the 2nd.
