In short

Janma Rashi, the "birth rashi", is the sidereal sign the Moon occupied at birth. In ordinary Indian usage it is what "your rashi" means. This app computes it from the birth date alone, uses it as the starting point for Sade Sati, Ashtama Sani and every transit reading, and warns when the Moon changed sign during the birth date.

What the term means

Janma Rashi is the rashi the Moon was in at the moment of birth, measured on the sidereal zodiac. It is the same thing as the Vedic Moon sign, and when someone in India gives "my rashi" without qualification, this is usually the sign they mean. It is not the Western Sun sign, which uses a different body and a different zodiac.

Where the term comes from

Saravali uses the phrase in its chapter on the tenth house (Ch. 33), where combinations are read "in the 10th from his Janma Rasi", alternating with the plainer "in the 10th of the Moon" for the same count. Daivajna Vallabha, a book of horary questions, names the janma rasi and its lord in the horoscope of an opponent (Sl. 25 of the queries on enemies). BPHS does not use the phrase; it speaks of the Moon's rashi directly and, for the dashas, of the Moon's birth nakshatra.

How this app uses it

  • The Janma Rashi is the Moon's sidereal longitude divided by 30. It needs no birth time: for 19 January 1985 in New Delhi the engine places the Moon in Dhanu (Sagittarius) at 12.66 degrees whether or not the time is given.
  • It is the reference point for Saturn's Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani and for the general transit reading, all counted from this sign.
  • The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so by the engine's own count it changes sign on close to half of all birth dates. Without a birth time the Moon-sign calculator therefore reports the sign at both ends of the date and says whether they differ.

A birth time is optional. Without one this is read at local noon on your birth date - and the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day, so add the time if you know it.

No place is asked for on this page, so the time is read as Indian Standard Time (IST). Born outside India? Run it on its own page, where you can add the place.

This date is sent only to compute the answer. Nothing is stored, no account is created, and no email is asked for.
