Ashtama Sani is transiting Saturn in the 8th sign from your natal Moon. This guide gives the exact rule this app runs, the engine's window for each of the twelve Moon signs, a Scorpio-Moon worked example across two windows, and what the one source that names it actually says.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

In short

Ashtama Sani is the stretch of time when transiting Saturn occupies the 8th sign counted from your natal Moon sign. In this app's engine one window lasts between about 2.1 and 3.0 years from first entry to final exit, and most are split by a retrograde. BPHS does not name it; the name and definition come from the later transit literature.

This page treats Ashtama Sani the way this app treats every named rule: as a statement about positions that anyone can check, with the engine's dates for each Moon sign and an honest account of where the idea comes from. For your own answer today, the Ashtama Sani calculator gives it from a birth date. The long-form underneath that calculator already explains the arithmetic step by step, the lookup table from Moon sign to Saturn sign, the sign changes from 2025 to 2036 and what a missing birth time does; none of that is repeated here.

What Ashtama Sani is, and how this app computes it

Ashtama means "eighth" and Sani is Saturn, Shani. Ashtama Sani is the period during which transiting Saturn occupies the 8th sign counted from the sign your Moon occupied at birth, with the Moon sign itself counted as the 1st. It is a rule of Gochara, the reading of transits from the natal Moon, so the starting point is your Janma Rashi and not your ascendant. A short definition also sits in the glossary under Ashtama Sani.

The engine function is computeAshtamaSani() in the server's kundaliEngine.js. It takes two whole-sign numbers, the natal Moon's and transiting Saturn's, and computes the inclusive count from one to the other. A count of 8 returns active: true, the name "Ashtama Sani" and one sentence; a count of 4 returns its sibling, Ardha Ashtama Sani; every other count returns active: false and nothing more. There is no degree test, no orb and no weighting. Both signs are sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa), and the Saturn sign is the one at the moment you ask.

The sentence the app shows beside an active result is the same for every person in the period: "Saturn is transiting the 8th sign from your natal Moon - a classically demanding transit for emotional and financial stability, traditionally read as a time to move carefully rather than take on new risk." That wording is deliberate. The function's own comment records that the source it follows illustrates the period with a named person's death, and that this example was not carried over; the period is presented as a named classical condition, not as a forecast.

Not a natal dosha

Nothing in your birth chart is "afflicted" by Ashtama Sani. It is a calendar window that opens and closes on dates, shared by everyone born with the Moon in the same sign. The word dosha is used for it only in the loose sense this app uses for every named difficult combination.

What the classical texts say, and where they are silent

A plain finding first. A search of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra translation in this app's source library for "ashtam" and "asthama" finds no passage about Saturn in the 8th from the Moon. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not name it either. The name and the definition come from the modern transit literature.

Advanced Predictive Astrology, p. 313

The one corpus book that names Ashtama Sani is Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II in this library), in the chapter "Research on Transits". On p. 313 it defines the period as Saturn's passage through the 8th from the radical Moon and, attributing the reading to Varahamihira, describes a person neglected by family and put to menial work, with humiliation as the result. It then gives a named public figure's death as an example. This page does not repeat that example; one case is anecdote, not evidence, and this app does not time deaths.

The same page adds three Saturn conditions that the definition does not include, and the engine computes none of them:

  • Transiting Saturn exactly opposite its own natal position, which the book says marks important events.
  • Transiting Saturn casting its 3rd, 7th or 10th aspect on the natal Lagna, Sun or Moon, which it reads as a time of distress.
  • Saturn transiting the 8th house when the natal Moon or the 8th lord occupies it, which it reads as markedly harder. This one needs an ascendant, which a date-only calculator does not have.

Two pages earlier (p. 311) the chapter is more balanced than its reputation: Saturn "gives good results in 3/6/11th from Moon", and its arrival in the 10th from the Moon "is a period of gain". Both of those positions come shortly after the 8th in Saturn's journey round your Moon, as the worked example below shows.

What BPHS and Saravali say about Saturn in transit

BPHS does not count Saturn's transit from the Moon in the Ashtama Sani way. It grades a transit by the Ashtakavarga: Ch. 66 Sl. 70-72 says a graha passing through signs marked with dots in its own table gives unfavourable results, and Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44 applies this to Saturn, favourable through signs with more Rekhas and adverse through signs with more dots. In Saturn's own table (Ch. 66 Sl. 59-60) the Moon contributes a point for Saturn only in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from her, not in the 8th. The 8th from the Moon is therefore never helped by the Moon's own contribution, but the other seven reference points can still make the sign strong or weak for a particular chart. Two people with the same Moon sign can be in the same Ashtama Sani and in different Ashtakavarga situations.

Saravali, closing its Ashtakavarga chapter (Ch. 53 Sl. 9-10), adds two refinements. Transit results lean favourable when the sign being crossed is the graha's own, its exaltation or a friend's, and lean adverse in debilitation or enemy signs. And it says Saturn, like the Moon, gives its transit effect at the end of a sign rather than on entry. Neither refinement is applied by the engine, which treats every day of the stay alike.

The engine's Gochar rule

The Gochar calculator reads all nine grahas by the transit rules of S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology (Ch. XXXI, pp. 117-118), which the engine quotes; that book is not in the text corpus. For Saturn the 1st, 8th and 12th from the Moon return "testing" with the note "classically the most intense of Saturn's transit positions from your Moon - a period that calls for real patience and consolidation". The engine's comment records that the source's own wording for Saturn here is much harsher and was reframed. Kannan also lists one "intensified" position per graha; for Saturn it is the 1st from the Moon, not the 8th, so the Gochar screen does not raise that flag during Ashtama Sani.

Remedies

Books on Saturn transits often follow a bleak reading with propitiation. This app prescribes none for Ashtama Sani or anything else: no mantras, gemstones, pujas, fasts or donations.

Every Moon sign's Ashtama Sani window

The table takes each Moon sign's current or next complete Ashtama Sani from this engine's Saturn ingresses; where the next one runs past the end of the ingress table in 2050, it shows the most recent one instead. "Window" runs from Saturn's first entry into the 8th sign to its final exit. "Days inside" counts only the days Saturn actually spends in that sign; where it is smaller than the window, a retrograde took Saturn out and brought it back.

This app's computation: transit-ingresses.mjs saturn and engine-facts.mjs ashtama-sani, run 2026-10-13, grouped and counted by a scratch script on those rows. Sidereal (Lahiri), UTC, to the day.

On 13 October 2026 Saturn is in Pisces in this engine (29 March 2025 to 2 June 2027), so the Moon sign in Ashtama Sani today is Leo. Saturn's passage through each sign has its own page, for example Saturn transit in Pisces for the present Leo window and Saturn transit in Gemini for the Scorpio-Moon example below. Dates are this app's; near an ingress, other software can differ by hours to a day or two, because Saturn moves only a few arcminutes a day and slower still near a station.

How long it really lasts

The engine's own average for Saturn in one sign is 913 days, and "about two and a half years" is the figure usually quoted. The real windows are less tidy. Across every complete Ashtama Sani window in the 1990-2050 ingress table, the span from first entry to final exit runs from 773 days (2.12 years, Scorpio Moon, 2032-2034) to 1,093 days (2.99 years, Taurus Moon, 2046-2049). The days Saturn actually spends in the 8th sign run from 773 to 1,020.

  • Only three complete windows in the table are a single unbroken stay: Virgo Moon 1998-2000 (781 days), Scorpio Moon 2032-2034 (773 days) and Sagittarius Moon 2034-2036 (778 days).
  • Most windows have two entries: Saturn enters, retrogrades back out for a few months, and returns. The Leo window running now is one of them, and the calculator long-form walks through it.
  • Four windows in the table have three entries: Cancer Moon 1993-1996, Scorpio Moon 2002-2005, Sagittarius Moon 2004-2007 and Virgo Moon 2027-2030.
  • A split window is usually longer from end to end but not longer inside. Leo's present window spans 1,060 days but holds 919 days of Saturn in Pisces; the 141-day gap is time when the calculator says "not active".

Over a longer stretch the share evens out. Across the 21,540 days from 15 December 1990 to 5 December 2049, each Moon sign spends between 7.4 per cent (Scorpio, 1,592 days) and 9.2 per cent (Gemini, 1,980 days) of the time in Ashtama Sani. Over the same stretch every Moon sign spends between 56.5 and 60.0 per cent of its days in none of the three named Saturn periods - Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani or Ashtama Sani.

Worked example: a Scorpio Moon, 2002-2005 and 2032-2034

Take a natal Moon in Scorpio. Counting Scorpio as the 1st, the 8th sign is Gemini. Here is every stay of Saturn near Gemini during the Scorpio Moon's first window in the table, with the engine's answer on a sample day inside each stay. Each sample is the engine run at 12:00 IST on that day.

transit-ingresses.mjs saturn and a scratch run of currentTransits(), computeAshtamaSani() and computeGochara() for Moon sign 7 (Scorpio), run 2026-10-13. Day counts are date arithmetic on the ingress rows.

Read down the right-hand column: on, off, on, off, on. The window spans 1,038 days (2.84 years) from 24 July 2002 to 27 May 2005, but Saturn is in Gemini for 819 of them. Twice the period stops: for 93 days when Saturn backs into Taurus, the 7th from this Moon, on which Kannan's rule is silent and the engine says "neutral"; and for 126 days when it first crosses into Cancer, the 9th. The calculator has no memory of the window and reports only the day you ask about, so a Scorpio-Moon reader checking in February 2003 would have been told "not active", correctly for that day.

The next Scorpio-Moon window is a different shape entirely. Saturn enters Gemini on 30 May 2032 and leaves on 12 July 2034, with no retrograde crossing in between: 773 days, one entry, no pause. The engine run for 1 June 2033 puts Saturn at 12.50 Gemini and returns Ashtama Sani. Two consecutive windows for the same Moon sign thus differ by 265 days in span and by the number of times they start.

The Scorpio Moon's whole Saturn calendar

Ashtama Sani is one of three named Saturn periods the engine computes, and they follow one another in a fixed order as Saturn moves round the Moon. For a Scorpio Moon, the ingress table gives this sequence: Ardha Ashtama Sani from 6 March 1993 to 17 February 1996; Ashtama Sani from 24 July 2002 to 27 May 2005; Sade Sati from 15 November 2011 to 23 January 2020; Ardha Ashtama Sani again from 27 April 2022 to 29 March 2025; Ashtama Sani from 30 May 2032 to 12 July 2034; and Sade Sati from 26 September 2041. Between the end of the 2002-2005 Ashtama Sani and the start of the next Sade Sati lie 2,363 days in which none of the three is running; between the end of the 2032-2034 one and the next Sade Sati, 2,633.

Those gaps are where the positions both sources call good fall. After the 8th, Saturn moves through the 9th (neutral in the engine), the 10th (which Advanced Predictive Astrology calls "a period of gain") and the 11th (favourable in the engine for every graha). The worked example shows only what the rule computes; it says nothing about what any Scorpio-Moon person experienced in 2002-2005 or will experience in 2032-2034.

Saturn's aspects from the 8th

The engine's aspect function gives Saturn three aspects: the universal 7th and its special 3rd and 10th, each counted from the sign Saturn occupies (BPHS's special drishti). From the 8th sign from your Moon, those land on the 10th, the 2nd and the 5th from your Moon. None of them falls on the Moon sign itself. So the p. 313 condition about Saturn aspecting the natal Moon is not met by the Ashtama Sani position, though it can still be met for the natal Lagna or Sun, which depend on the rest of the chart. By the same arithmetic, the three Saturn positions whose aspect does fall on the Moon sign are the 4th (Ardha Ashtama Sani, by the 10th aspect), the 7th and the 11th. The engine computes no transit aspects, so none of this appears on any screen; it is offered only to show what the book's extra conditions would and would not add.

Cancellations and exceptions

The engine applies none. computeAshtamaSani() reads two sign numbers and nothing else, so no property of your chart can switch the result off. On the source side:

  • Advanced Predictive Astrology states no exception for Ashtama Sani. The exception it does state - that the trouble is not felt when Saturn is a yogakaraka for the chart and well placed with benefic association or aspect - is written about Sade Sati (p. 311), and its remark that people born with the Moon beside Saturn notice little difference is also about Sade Sati. Extending either to the 8th would be this page's invention, so it does not.
  • BPHS's Ashtakavarga rule and Saravali's dignity rule are gradings, not cancellations: they say how strongly a transit works, not whether it exists. The Ashtakavarga calculator shows Saturn's points in every sign of your chart, so you can see which way that grading would lean.
  • The source the Gochar screen follows marks the 8th as "testing" without exception.

What Ashtama Sani does not tell you

The house view on doshas, set out in Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not and Kaal Sarp Dosha explained, applies here too: a named rule describes positions, it does not deliver a verdict on a life.

  • It does not say what will happen. The engine returns one sentence for everyone in the period. Nothing in a two-sign comparison encodes your dasha, your age, your ascendant or your circumstances.
  • It does not weigh Saturn's condition in your chart. Whether Saturn is strong, a yogakaraka, or well supported in your Ashtakavarga is not tested.
  • It is the same for everyone with your Moon sign. At any moment exactly one of the twelve Moon signs is in it.
  • It is not more precise than your Moon sign. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date, the calculator shows both ends of the day; the long-form under it explains how often that matters.
  • It does not count from the ascendant. Natal Saturn in the 8th house is a separate, permanent placement with its own page.
  • It is not a reason to buy anything. No remedy is needed to read a calendar, and this app offers none.

For Saturn's natal role in your chart, see Saturn in Vedic astrology and Saturn in the 8th house; for the house itself, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava. The two sibling Saturn periods have their own pages, Sade Sati and Ardha Ashtama Sani, and a running Saturn Mahadasha is read on the Vimshottari Dasha calculator. How positions are computed is on the methodology page.

Is Ashtama Sani mentioned in BPHS?
Not in the translation this app uses. A search for "ashtam" and "asthama" finds no passage about Saturn in the 8th from the Moon, and Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not name it either. BPHS judges Saturn's transit through its Ashtakavarga (Ch. 66 Sl. 70-72, Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44). The name and definition in this library come from Advanced Predictive Astrology, p. 313.
Which Moon sign is in Ashtama Sani now?
On 13 October 2026, with Saturn in Pisces in this engine, it is Leo. Leo's window runs from 29 March 2025 to 22 February 2028, with a 141-day break while Saturn is in Aries in 2027-2028.
How long does Ashtama Sani last?
In this engine, every complete window from 1990 to 2050 spans between 773 and 1,093 days from first entry to final exit, and Saturn is actually in the 8th sign for between 773 and 1,020 of those days. Most windows are split once by a retrograde; a few are split twice.
Can Ashtama Sani stop and start again?
Yes, when Saturn retrogrades across the boundary of the 8th sign. For a Scorpio Moon the 2002-2005 window paused twice: 93 days in early 2003 and 126 days in late 2004.
Is Ashtama Sani worse than Sade Sati?
The sources do not rank them, and this app does not either. Kannan's transit rule, as the engine quotes it, puts Saturn's 1st, 8th and 12th from the Moon in the same group, and the Gochar screen gives all three the same "testing" note. Sade Sati covers three signs and Ashtama Sani one, so Sade Sati simply lasts longer.
Does Ashtama Sani mean something bad will happen?
No. It means Saturn is in a particular sign relative to your Moon, a condition shared by everyone born under that Moon sign. The classical reading is of a demanding stretch for emotional and financial steadiness; the engine states that theme and makes no prediction of events.
Does a yogakaraka Saturn cancel Ashtama Sani?
Not in this app. The yogakaraka exception in Advanced Predictive Astrology is written about Sade Sati, not about the 8th, and the engine applies no exception to either period.
Does the app recommend remedies for Ashtama Sani?
No. Some books prescribe propitiation for Saturn; this app prescribes no mantras, gemstones, pujas or donations for Ashtama Sani or any other result.
