Saturn transit in Gemini: the dates, and what it means for each Moon sign

Gemini is Mercury's airy sign. BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 9 pictures it as a male and a female holding a mace and a lute, a two-footed sign of villages, windy in temperament. Saturn and Mercury are friends, and the engine reads Saturn in Gemini as a "Friendly sign" placement. The two passages inside this page's window could hardly be more different in shape, which is most of what there is to say about the dates. When Saturn is in Gemini: the ingress dates

Four stays between 1990 and 2050. Three of them belong to the 2002-2005 passage.

In 2002-2005 Saturn's yearly retrograde loops happened to straddle both boundaries of Gemini. It entered, fell back into Taurus for three months, re-entered, reached Cancer in September 2004, fell back again, and only left on 27 May 2005. The 2032-2034 passage has no such loop at either end in the engine's computation: one entry, one exit, a little over two years. The same planet in the same sign can therefore give a tidy period or a ragged one, depending on where the retrograde stations fall.

Retrograde is vakri in Sanskrit terms. In the Gochar calculator it appears as a flag beside Saturn's degree in the sign; it changes the dates, not the house count.

Gemini counted from your Moon: the house and the verdict

Gochara (glossary) reads a transit from the natal Moon sign. Counting your Moon sign as 1, find where Gemini falls. The engine then assigns Saturn: 1st, 8th, 12th "testing" (most intense), 4th "testing", 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 11th "favourable", and the rest "neutral".

Virgo is the Moon sign for which Gemini is the 10th. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 311) treats that as "a period of gain"; the engine, following a source that gives Saturn no 10th-house rule, calls it neutral. Sade Sati, Ashtama Sani and Ardha Ashtama Sani with Saturn in Gemini

• Cancer Moon: Gemini is the 12th, the rising phase of Sade Sati. On the coming passage it begins on 30 May 2032.
• Gemini Moon: the peak phase, and the engine's "intensified" flag for Saturn in the 1st from the Moon.
• Taurus Moon: the setting phase; it ends on 12 July 2034 when Saturn enters Cancer.
• Scorpio Moon: Gemini is the 8th, Ashtama Sani.
• Pisces Moon: Gemini is the 4th, Ardha Ashtama Sani.

How long Saturn spends in Gemini, and the nakshatras it crosses

Adding up the engine's stays: the 2002-2005 passage spent 819 days in Gemini (166, then 517, then 136), spread across almost three calendar years. The 2032-2034 passage spends 773 days in one block. The calculator's 913-day duration label is an average for Saturn in any sign; neither Gemini passage matches it.

Gemini contains padas 3 and 4 of Mrigashira, all four padas of Ardra and the first three of Punarvasu in the engine's table. The degree shown in the Gochar calculator places Saturn among them. That detail matters for the 45-degree Sade Sati boundary Advanced Predictive Astrology mentions, which is measured from the natal Moon's degree rather than its sign; the engine itself uses the whole sign.

What the classical texts say

The corpus has no transit reading for Saturn in Gemini as a sign. Advanced Predictive Astrology frames Saturn's transit by house from the Moon and notes that Sade Sati "occurs once in 30 yrs" - which the dates bear out: 2002-2005 and then 2032-2034. For the 8th it quotes Varahamihira on Ashtama Sani in strongly negative terms (p. 313), about neglect at home and humiliation. That is the classical claim, reported; the engine's own note for the 8th is "a period that calls for real patience and consolidation", and this page follows the engine.

The same book is more hopeful about the far side of the cycle: when Saturn enters the 3rd sign from the Moon, it says, a person turns "a new leaf" (p. 312). Gemini is the 3rd from Aries, and the engine marks Saturn in Gemini "favourable" for an Aries Moon.

The sign itself: Mercury's air sign

Gemini is ruled by Mercury, a friend of Saturn. The engine labels Saturn there "Friendly sign" for all thirty degrees; the birth-chart reading is on Saturn in Gemini. The dignity is not an input to the Gochara verdict. The house from the Moon is.

Worked example: a Cancer Moon across both Gemini passages

Take a natal Moon in Cancer. Gemini is its 12th, so Saturn there is the rising phase of Sade Sati. The two passages give two very different openings:

1. 1.2002: Saturn enters Gemini on 24 July 2002 - Sade Sati begins. It backs into Taurus, the 11th ("favourable"), from 6 January to 9 April 2003, pausing the count.
2. 2.2003-2005: Gemini again from 9 April 2003. Saturn reaches Cancer, the peak, on 7 September 2004, retreats to Gemini from 11 January 2005, and returns to Cancer on 27 May 2005.
3. 3.2032: Saturn enters Gemini on 30 May 2032, coming straight from Taurus. No loop.
4. 4.2034: Saturn enters Cancer on 12 July 2034, the peak phase, and stays until 28 August 2036.

The earlier Sade Sati for this Moon started, stopped, started, and its rising and peak phases interleaved. The next one runs in order. Advanced Predictive Astrology's alternative boundary - Saturn within 45 degrees either side of the natal Moon's exact degree - would shift both start dates depending on where in Cancer the Moon sits. The North Indian list marks the middle two and a half years as the heavier part for Cancer. And the dasha matters as much as the transit; the book calls them the two limbs of prediction. A Saturn Mahadasha running alongside is a different case from a Jupiter period.

Why did Saturn's 2002-2005 Gemini passage come in three parts?

Saturn's retrograde loops fell across both edges of the sign: back into Taurus in early 2003, and back from Cancer in early 2005. Each crossing is a separate row in the date table.
