Rahu transit in Gemini (Ketu in Sagittarius): the dates, and what it means for each Moon sign

With Rahu in Gemini, Ketu sits in Sagittarius: the two dual (mutable) signs ruled by Mercury and Jupiter face each other across the axis. BPHS gives this pair a particular place, naming Gemini as Rahu's moolatrikona and Sagittarius as Ketu's. Dates: when Rahu is in Gemini and Ketu in Sagittarius

The node used is the mean node, not the true (oscillating) one. The mean node's motion is uniform and always retrograde, which is why the rows below have no re-entries: Rahu crosses into Gemini from the sign after it and leaves into the sign before it, once per pass. Ketu holds Sagittarius for exactly the same span. Window: 1990 to 2050.

The 2019-2020 pass opened at 04:09 UTC on 7 March 2019, mid-morning in India, after Rahu's stay in Cancer, and closed on 23 September 2020, when Rahu moved back into Taurus. The earlier pass ran from 30 July 2000 to 16 February 2002. In the window there are three Gemini stays, each of 566 days (about eighteen and a half months), and the 2037-2039 one is the next.

Every row below starts from a natal Moon sign. Counting that sign as the 1st, Gemini gives Rahu's house and Sagittarius gives Ketu's, always six houses apart. The engine's verdicts follow one rule for both nodes, the malefic set from its Gochara source: 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th testing; 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th favourable; 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th neutral. With Rahu in Gemini the Libra Moon carries Rahu's intensified flag (Gemini is its 9th, verdict neutral) and the Scorpio Moon carries Ketu's (Sagittarius is its 2nd, favourable), while Rahu in Gemini is its 8th and testing. A Virgo Moon has Rahu in the 10th, a neutral row in the engine, and Ketu in the 4th, a testing one. A Sagittarius Moon is the mirror of a Gemini Moon: Ketu sits on its Moon sign (1st, testing) with Rahu in the 7th (neutral).

What the classical texts say about the nodes in transit

Of the books in this library, Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II gives the clearest Rahu transit rule ("Transit effects of Rahu and Ketu", pp. 317-318): the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon, Sun or Ascendant are good for Rahu, and the Moon sign itself plus the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 12th are "very bad". For Rahu in Gemini the good list reads Aries, Leo, Virgo and Capricorn, the bad list Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces. Where it parts from the engine is specific: the Taurus Moon, for whom Gemini is the 2nd (engine favourable, book bad), and the Virgo Moon, for whom it is the 10th (book good, engine neutral). The 9th is on neither of the book's lists.

Neither BPHS nor Saravali in this library gives a reading for Rahu transiting Gemini as such. The moolatrikona assignment in BPHS appears in Ch. 47, the chapter on dasha effects, where the node's sign is used to judge its Mahadasha. A transit reading, in the corpus, is a matter of house from the Moon, and that is all the engine uses.

The sign itself: Gemini with Sagittarius opposite

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 1/2: "The Multrikonas of Rahu and Ketu are Mithun and Dhanu" - Gemini and Sagittarius. On that text, each node in this transit sits in its own moolatrikona, which is the only axis for which that holds. The same passage names Taurus and Scorpio as the exaltations and Aquarius and Scorpio as the own signs; and the Bhrigu Sutras record that the ancients argued over all of this. This app gives the nodes no dignity in any sign (engine-facts reports "Neutral" 0-30 degrees for Rahu in Gemini and Ketu in Sagittarius), so the moolatrikona status does not enter its verdicts.

One more point about speed. The Bhrigu Sutras put the nodes' backward motion at 19 degrees 20 minutes a year, about 18 months to a sign. The Gemini stays in the table are 566 days each, consistent with that rate, and the engine labels the average as 548 days. The label is only an average; the table's own rows are the dates to use. And because the axis is fixed at 180 degrees, Ketu's entry into Sagittarius and exit into Scorpio fall at exactly the same minutes as Rahu's Gemini ingress and egress - there is no separate Ketu timetable to look up.

Worked example: a Gemini Moon as the axis arrives on it

Take a natal Moon in Gemini. Gemini is the 1st sign from it and Sagittarius the 7th. The three consecutive passes, from this table and the neighbouring sign runs:

1. 1.18 August 2017 to 7 March 2019: Rahu in Cancer, the 2nd from this Moon (favourable); Ketu in Capricorn, the 8th (testing).
2. 2.7 March 2019 to 23 September 2020: Rahu on the Moon sign, Gemini, the 1st (testing); Ketu in Sagittarius, the 7th (neutral).
3. 3.23 September 2020 to 12 April 2022: Rahu in Taurus, the 12th (testing); Ketu in Scorpio, the 6th (favourable).

Rahu is testing in two of the three steps for this Moon, and the source of the verdict differs each time: the 1st and 12th are on the engine's 1/8/12 list. The first step shows the 2nd-house disagreement in miniature - the engine calls Rahu in the 2nd favourable, while Advanced Predictive Astrology lists the 2nd as "very bad". Is Gemini Rahu's moolatrikona?

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 1/2 says so, with Sagittarius as Ketu's. Other authorities differ, and this app assigns no dignity to the nodes, so its transit verdicts do not change with it.

Which Moon signs have Ketu on the Moon sign during this transit?

Sagittarius. Ketu in Sagittarius is the 1st from a Sagittarius Moon, which the engine calls testing; Rahu is then in the 7th (neutral).

Does the 2019-2020 transit have any retrograde re-entry?

No. The mean node used here moves backwards at a steady rate, so each stay is one interval. True-node software can show small reversals near a boundary.

Why do the engine and Advanced Predictive Astrology disagree for a Taurus Moon?
