In short
Gochara is the Sanskrit term for transit: where the grahas are in the sky now, read against the birth chart. This app counts each of the nine grahas' current sign from the natal Moon sign and labels the position favourable, neutral or testing by a fixed classical rule set. Advanced Predictive Astrology pairs it with the dasha: the dasha as the hour hand, transit as the minute hand.
What the term means
Gochara, often written gochar, means transit: the movement of the grahas through the signs after birth. A transit reading compares where a graha is today with a fixed point in the birth chart. In this app's main reading that point is the natal Moon sign (the Chandra Lagna), so a transit is described as a house counted from the Moon, for example "Saturn in the 4th from your Moon".
Where the term comes from
BPHS approaches transits through the Ashtakavarga. In Ch. 66 Sl. 1-4 Maitreya asks for a method based on "the positions of the Grahas in transit", and Sl. 70-72 say a graha passing through the dot-marked houses of its own Ashtakavarga gives unfavourable results and elsewhere favourable ones. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II) uses the word Gochara directly: dasha results "refer to the hour" and transit results to the minute hand of a clock, and it calls dasha and transit the two limbs of prediction.
How this app computes it
- For each of the nine grahas the engine takes the current sidereal sign and counts it as a house from the natal Moon sign.
- The 11th from the Moon is favourable for every graha. The 4th is testing for every graha. Otherwise Saturn and the natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Rahu, Ketu) are testing in the 1st, 8th and 12th and favourable in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th; the benefics are testing in the 1st, 8th and 12th and favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th. Houses the rule set says nothing about stay neutral.
- One named graha-and-house pair per graha is flagged as "intensified", and each row carries the degree, nakshatra and retrograde status.
- A second reading counts from the Ascendant and compares the house's Ashtakavarga bindus with the chart's own average.
A small illustration
For a natal Moon in Sagittarius (the chart of 19 January 1985, New Delhi), the engine's reading for 13 October 2026 puts Saturn in Pisces, the 4th from the Moon, as testing; Jupiter and Mars in Cancer, the 8th, as testing; the Moon, Mercury and Venus in Libra, the 11th, as favourable; and Rahu in Aquarius, the 3rd, as favourable. No graha is flagged as intensified.
