In short

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied at birth. In this app it is always measured on the sidereal zodiac, so it is the same as your Janma Rashi, and it is the sign Vedic astrology means by "your rashi". A Western Moon sign uses the tropical zodiac and is often one sign later.

What the term means

The Moon sign is the rashi the Moon was in at the moment of birth. On this site it always means the sidereal sign, which makes it another name for the Janma Rashi. Vedic practice treats it as a person's sign by default, where Western sun-sign columns use the Sun.

Where the term comes from

Saravali's translation uses the phrase directly, setting "the Lord of Moon Sign" beside the lord of the Ascendant (Ch. 5 Sl. 18), and devotes Ch. 23 to the Moon in each of the twelve rashis. BPHS gives the reason the Moon's sign is read at all: Ch. 12 Sl. 11 tells the reader to judge effects from the Moon as from the Lagna.

How this app computes it

  • The Moon's position comes from the lunar series in Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, measured from the equinox; the Lahiri ayanamsa is subtracted and the result divided by 30.
  • For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the tropical Moon is at 276.30 degrees, which is Capricorn 6.30. Less the ayanamsa of 23.64 degrees it is 252.66 sidereal: Sagittarius 12.66. A Western chart would call this a Capricorn Moon; this app calls it Sagittarius.
  • It needs only a birth date. Without a time the Moon-sign calculator also shows the sign at both ends of the date, because the Moon changes sign on many birth dates.
  • Guna Milan reads the two Moon signs for three of its eight kootas, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot.

Moon Sign (Chandra Rashi)

Your Rashi in the sidereal zodiac, with the nakshatra the Moon was standing in.

A birth time is optional. Without one this is read at local noon on your birth date - and the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day, so add the time if you know it.

No place is asked for on this page, so the time is read as Indian Standard Time (IST). Born outside India? Run it on its own page, where you can add the place.

This date is sent only to compute the answer. Nothing is stored, no account is created, and no email is asked for.
