In short

Bhakoot koota is the seventh of the eight Ashtakoot matching factors and is worth seven points. It looks only at how many signs apart the two Moon signs are. In this app it is all or nothing: 0 when the signs are 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 apart, and 7 otherwise.

What the term means

Bhakoot (also written bhakuta or rashi koota) compares the positions of the two Moon signs: count from one person's Moon sign to the other's, then back again. Certain pairs of counts are treated as unfavourable. It is worth seven points of 36 in guna milan, and the app's note for it reads "long-term prosperity and family harmony". A zero here is what popular practice calls Bhakoot Dosha.

Where the term comes from

None of the texts in this app's library contains the rule. It comes from the published references the project adopted for Ashtakoot. Those references were checked in 2026: two independent ones agreed that signs 5 and 9 apart score zero, so that case was changed from 7 to 0. A third reference was set aside because its own sign table contradicted its prose. The project's rules document records each step.

How this app computes it

  • Count the signs from the first Moon sign to the second, inclusive, and from the second back to the first.
  • If the pair of counts is 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8, Bhakoot scores 0.
  • Every other pair, including the same sign, signs 3 and 11 apart, 4 and 10 apart, and opposite signs, scores the full 7.
  • There is no middle value. It reads Moon signs only, and it is one of the four kootas in business and friendship matching.

A small illustration

Leo is the 5th sign from Aries, and Aries the 9th from Leo, so an Aries Moon with a Leo Moon scores 0, the largest single loss in that pair's 20 of 36. Aries with Taurus (2 and 12) also scores 0. Aries with Gemini (3 and 11) scores 7, and so does Leo with Taurus (4 and 10).
