In short

Graha Maitri koota is the fifth of the eight Ashtakoot matching factors and is worth five points. It looks at the grahas that rule the two Moon signs and asks whether each counts the other as friend, neutral or enemy, using the natural relationships of BPHS Ch. 3. This app grades it from 5 down to 0.

What the term means

Graha maitri means "friendship of the grahas". This koota takes the lord of each person's Moon sign (Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus and so on) and asks how the two lords regard each other. It is worth five points of 36, and the app's note for it says it "governs mental rapport".

Where the term comes from

The relationships come from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, "Natural Relationships": counted from a graha's moolatrikona sign, the lords of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 12th signs, together with the lord of its exaltation sign, are its friends, the others its enemies, and a graha that qualifies both ways is neutral. This is naisargika maitri. The koota that turns two such relations into points is not in the corpus; the project adopted published references for it.

How this app computes it

  • The engine looks up each lord's view of the other (friend, neutral or enemy) from its natural-relationship table. The relation can differ in each direction.
  • Same lord, or friends both ways: 5. Friend and neutral: 4. Neutral both ways: 3.
  • Friend one way and enemy the other: 3. Neutral and enemy: 1. Enemies both ways: 0.
  • The references agreed on the 5, 4, 3 and 0 grades. They disagreed on the two mixed cases with an enemy, and there the engine kept its earlier values; the project's rules document records both choices.
  • It reads the Moon signs, and it is one of the four kootas used in business and friendship matching.

A small illustration

Aries and Leo: Mars and the Sun list each other as friends, so 5. Leo and Taurus: the Sun and Venus are enemies both ways, so 0. Aries and Taurus: Mars and Venus are neutral both ways, so 3. Aries and Gemini: Mars counts Mercury an enemy while Mercury counts Mars neutral, so 1. The engine returns each of these for Moons at the start of those signs.
