In short
Tatkalika maitri is temporary friendship, read from one chart: two grahas are friends if one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and enemies otherwise. This app combines it with natural friendship to decide whether a planet is in a friendly, neutral or enemy sign, so the same placement can read differently in two charts.
What the term means
Tatkalika means "of that moment". Unlike the fixed natural friendships, temporary friendship is read from where two grahas actually sit in a chart. Count the signs from one to the other. If the second is in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the first, they are temporary friends; anywhere else, including the same sign, they are temporary enemies. The rule is mutual: 2nd and 12th, 3rd and 11th, 4th and 10th pair up, so counting either way gives the same answer.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 gives the six friendly positions and says the rest bring enmity, adding that it "applies to a given Janm Kundali", the birth chart. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 30 gives the same six, names the other six (the 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th) as temporary enmity, and says the rule may be applied to a horary chart as well as a birth chart.
How this app uses it
- The engine counts signs from a planet to the lord of the sign it occupies, applies the six-position rule, and combines the result with the natural relation into the fivefold relation. That decides the "Friendly sign", "Neutral" or "Enemy sign" step of the planet's dignity.
- In a 1985-06-05, 02:29 IST New Delhi chart the Sun is in Taurus, a sign of Venus, and Venus is in Aries, the 12th from the Sun. Venus is the Sun's natural enemy but here a temporary friend, so the engine labels the Sun "Neutral". With no chart to read, it would say "Enemy sign".
- For a planet's sign in a divisional chart, the temporary half is still read from the birth chart, as BPHS ties it to the Janma Kundali.
- The Prashna engine passes the question chart instead, as Saravali allows.
- The engine's notes record a correction: an earlier version counted from the planet's Moolatrikona sign, which repeated the natural relation instead of reading the chart.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
