In short

Naisargika maitri is the natural, fixed friendship between grahas: for each of the seven, a list of friends, neutrals and enemies that never changes from chart to chart. This app uses it in three places: the Graha Maitri score in kundli matching, the friend or enemy step of a planet's dignity, and the planet-friendship reading of numerology numbers.

What the term means

Naisargika means "natural". The natural friendships say, for each of the seven visible grahas, which of the others it treats as a friend, a neutral or an enemy. The lists are fixed: they do not depend on any chart. They are also one-directional. The Moon counts Mercury a friend, while Mercury counts the Moon an enemy. Combined with the temporary friendship read from a chart, they give the fivefold relation.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 gives the rule that produces the lists: the lords of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 12th signs from a graha's Moolatrikona, along with the lord of its exaltation sign, are its friends; the rest are enemies; a lord that comes out as both is neutral. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 writes the result out graha by graha, and adds that "The Moon has no enemies".

The engine's lists, the same as Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29. Any graha not named is neutral. Rahu and Ketu are not included.
  • Kundli matching grades Graha Maitri on the natural relation between the two Moon-sign lords, read both ways: 5 points for the same lord or mutual friends, 4 for friend and neutral, 3 for two neutrals and also for friend and enemy, 1 for neutral and enemy, 0 for mutual enemies.
  • A planet's dignity in another graha's sign uses the natural relation combined with the chart's temporary one. When no chart is given, the natural relation stands alone, so the Sun in Taurus reads "Enemy sign" because Venus is the Sun's natural enemy.
  • The numerology engines apply the same lists to the planets that rule numbers, to compare two numbers' rulers.
