In short

The 7th lord in the 10th house is the ruler of the house of partnership and marriage sitting in the house of work and public standing, an angle placed in another angle. BPHS reads it as a religious person with wealth and children, with a spouse who does not defer. Which planet it is, and how strong it is there, depends entirely on the Ascendant.

What the placement means

Every house is owned by the planet that rules its sign. That planet is the house lord, and wherever it sits in the chart, it carries the affairs of its own house there. "The 7th lord in the 10th house" therefore names a relationship between two houses: the 7th house (Yuvati Bhava), which the texts read for the spouse, partnerships and dealings with others, and the 10th house (Karma Bhava), which they read for work, rank and standing in public.

Both houses are Kendras, the four angles (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th). The 10th is the 4th sign from the 7th, so the placement also puts the 7th lord in an angle counted from its own house. Whatever classical weight the reading carries, it is a statement about two angles joined by one planet, not about either house alone.

This app counts houses whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses): the rising sign is the 1st house, the opposite sign the 7th, and the sign ten from the rising sign the 10th. The placement is true when the planet ruling the 7th sign stands in the 10th sign. Because the Ascendant decides both signs, the placement means nothing without a birth time; see when the birth time is unknown.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The table is the engine's own lordship arithmetic for all twelve rising signs. The last column is what the engine's dignity rule returns for that planet in that sign when no chart is given, so it uses the natural relationship between the planet and the sign's lord only. In a real chart the friendly, neutral and enemy tiers can shift, because the engine then adds the temporary relationship from where the two planets sit.

The 7th lord and the 10th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity using natural relationships only.

Three groups stand out. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 7th lord also rules the 10th, so the planet is simply in its own house: Jupiter in Pisces, Mercury in Virgo. For Cancer and Libra rising the 7th lord lands in its sign of debilitation (Saturn in Aries, Mars in Cancer), the dignity state in which BPHS expects the least from a planet. For Capricorn and Aquarius rising the 7th lord is a luminary, the Moon or the Sun, which rules no other house. The 7th-house page lists each lord's second house; that second lordship travels with the planet into the 10th.

What the texts say: BPHS Ch. 24 and the Kendra rule

BPHS Ch. 24 gives one verse for each house lord in each house. Sl. 82 is the one for this placement. In the translation in this project's corpus it reads that the native "will beget a disobedient wife, will be religious and endowed with wealth, sons etc." The alternative translation (bphs-alt) has the same wording. Like the rest of the chapter, it is addressed to a male native and talks about a wife; read in the neutral terms this app uses, it describes a spouse who does not defer, beside a person who is religious and has wealth and children.

Two things are worth noticing about that verse. First, it is mixed: one clause is about the marriage and three are about the person's own standing and resources, which matches the move from the house of the spouse into the house of public life. Second, BPHS does not read it alone. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 closes the chapter by saying these effects are to be judged by the planet's strength (full, half or a quarter of the results for strong, middling or weak), and that a planet ruling two houses gives the results of both lordships, with contrary results cancelling each other.

The second passage that bears directly on this placement is Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7, on lordship. It says that benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects, that malefics owning Kendras do not remain inauspicious, and that the 7th and 10th houses are "specially for happiness" among the angles. For the 7th lord in the 10th that means the nature of the planet changes how BPHS expects it to act: a Jupiter or Mercury ruling the 7th is a benefic owning an angle, while a Saturn, Mars or Sun ruling it is a malefic owning one. The yogakaraka idea, a planet that owns both an angle and a trine, grows out of the same chapter; the 7th lord qualifies only when its second sign is a trine, which no Ascendant's 7th lord does.

A named yoga that starts from this placement

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 18 names Shrinath Yoga: the 7th lord in the 10th, while the 10th lord is exalted and joined with the 9th lord. The text compares a person with this yoga to Devendra, king of the gods. This app's yoga detector does not test Shrinath Yoga, so the engine will not flag it; the conditions can be checked by hand in the birth chart calculator. The 7th lord in the 10th is only the first of its three conditions. For the yogas the engine does compute, see what a yoga in your chart means.

Where the other texts are silent

The Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in this project's corpus were searched for a verse on the 7th lord in the 10th. None gives one. The Bhrigu Sutras mention the strength of the 7th lord only inside the sutras for the Moon in the 7th house. The reading on this page therefore rests on BPHS alone.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The 7th-house page tabulates all twelve placements of the 7th lord; this page does not repeat them. Two neighbours help to frame Sl. 82. The reverse case, the 10th lord in the 7th house, is Sl. 115, which the 10th-house page paraphrases as happiness through the spouse, with intelligence, eloquence and truthfulness. When both happen at once the two lords have exchanged signs, which the texts call parivartana. The placement one house earlier, the 7th lord in the 9th (Sl. 81), and one house later, the 7th lord in the 11th (Sl. 83), both speak of gain or many undertakings; the 10th is the one of the three that names religion. The 7th lord in its own house is covered from the other end by the 7th lord in the 1st, the placement directly opposite its own sign.

BPHS also reads the spouse from a second chart: Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns "spouse" to the Navamsa. A reading of the 7th lord in the birth chart is usually checked against that planet's sign in the Navamsa (D9), which the Navamsa calculator computes and the second-chart essay explains.

Worked example: Pisces rising, Mercury in Sagittarius

This chart was found by a deterministic search in this app's engine, not chosen to make a point. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi. The engine gives an Ascendant of Pisces 23.04.

  • With Pisces rising, the 7th house is Virgo, so the 7th lord is Mercury. Mercury also rules Gemini, the 4th house: two angles.
  • The 10th house is Sagittarius. The engine places Mercury there at 16.62 degrees, in Purva Ashadha nakshatra, pada 1. The placement holds.
  • Mercury is not retrograde and not combust. Its dignity in this chart is "Friendly sign": the natural relation to Jupiter, Sagittarius's lord, is neutral, and the chart's temporary relation lifts it one tier.
  • The Moon is also in the 10th, at Sagittarius 12.66, so the 7th lord does not sit alone.

Read with Ch. 34, Mercury here is a natural benefic owning two Kendras, the case where BPHS says a benefic's lordship does not give benefic effects; read with Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148, a neutral-to-friendly Mercury is neither the full-strength nor the negligible case. The chart also shows why Shrinath Yoga does not form: the 10th lord, Jupiter, is at Capricorn 2.09, which the engine marks Debilitated (and combust), not exalted, and the 9th lord, Mars, is in Aquarius in the 12th, not with Jupiter.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 10th house in 247, or 8.2%. That is a property of the sky and the clock, not a count of people. It is close to one in twelve, which is what one house out of twelve would suggest.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your rising sign with the Lagna calculator (it needs a birth time) and read the 7th lord off the table above.
  2. Open your birth chart and see whether that planet sits in the 10th sign from the Ascendant.
  3. Note its dignity and any second house it rules; BPHS reads both lordships together.
  4. Check the planets sharing the 10th with it, and whether the 10th lord is exalted and with the 9th lord (the Shrinath conditions).
  5. Compare the planet's Navamsa sign, which BPHS uses for the spouse.

None of these steps produces a verdict about a marriage or a career. They tell you which classical rule applies and how strong BPHS would consider the planet carrying it.

Questions about the 7th lord in the 10th

What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 10th house?
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 82 says the native will have a disobedient wife, will be religious, and will have wealth, sons and the like. The chapter's closing verses say the result is scaled by the planet's strength and combined with any second house it rules.
Does the 7th lord in the 10th mean I will marry a colleague or do business with my spouse?
No verse in this project's corpus says that. BPHS Sl. 82 speaks of the spouse's temperament and the native's religion, wealth and children, not of where the spouse is met. This app does not turn a placement into a prediction about a person.
Which planet is the 7th lord for my Ascendant?
The planet that rules the sign opposite your rising sign. The table on this page lists it for all twelve Ascendants; the Lagna calculator finds your rising sign.
Is the 7th lord in the 10th a yoga?
On its own, no. It is the first of the three conditions of Shrinath Yoga in BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 18; the other two are an exalted 10th lord joined with the 9th lord. This app's yoga detector does not test Shrinath Yoga.
How common is this placement?
In the engine's sample it occurred in 247 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%. That describes moments in time, not people.
