In short

The 7th lord in the 9th house carries the ruler of marriage and partnership into the house of fortune, dharma and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 81 is mixed: wandering affections, yet good will toward one's own spouse and many undertakings. As an angle lord in a trine, it is also one of the relations Ch. 34 counts toward a yoga, unless the planet owns an evil house.

What the placement means

The 7th house lord rules the sign opposite the Ascendant. Placed in the 9th sign, it carries the 7th's concerns - spouse, partners, trade - into the house of fortune, religion, the father, teachers and long journeys.

Counted from the 7th, the 9th is the 3rd house: the house of effort and enterprise reckoned from its own sign. That may be why "many undertakings" appears in the verse. Counted from the Ascendant, an angle lord has moved into the strongest trine, which is one of Parashara's yoga-forming relations.

The two houses involved

The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra: marriage, partnerships, the public and trade.

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is a trikona: fortune, dharma, the father and the guru, and with the 5th "specially for wealth" in Ch. 34.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 81

Sl. 81 reads: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Dharm Bhava, the native will have union with many women, be well disposed to his own wife and will have many undertakings." One clause is unfavourable by the text's own values, two are favourable.

The verse sets two marriage clauses side by side that a modern reader may find in tension: many unions, yet good will toward one's own spouse. BPHS states both without comment. "Many undertakings" is the clause that fits the house count above, the 3rd from the 7th being a house of initiative. The verse is written for a male native in its era's terms; this app reads it as the text's statement about a combination and does not predict relationships.

The reverse is more settled. Sl. 103, Dharm's lord in Yuvati, says the native will "beget happiness after marriage, be virtuous and famous". The two directions both look on marriage with some favour; only Sl. 81 adds wandering affections.

An angle lord in a trine

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 count a Kendr lord in a Kon ("or vice versa") among the relations that "cause a Yog". The 7th lord in the 9th meets that. Sl. 15 withholds the yoga when the planet also owns an evil house - for this lord, Taurus and Scorpio (12th), Cancer (8th) and Leo (6th). This app's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga check needs the angle lord and the trine lord conjunct or in mutual aspect, so the placement alone is not flagged. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add the Kendra-lord rule, and Ch. 44 makes the 7th lord a maraka for longevity timing - a classification this app does not turn into predictions. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale and combine. The Saravali has no verse here.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 7th lord and the 9th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Taurus rising puts Mars, lord of the 7th and 12th, exalted in Capricorn. Two rows are debilitated: Leo rising (Saturn, lord of the 6th and 7th, in Aries) and Aquarius rising (the Sun in Libra). Virgo, Libra and Scorpio rising put the lord in an enemy sign.

The second-lordship verses for a lord in Dharm are some of the strongest contrasts in Ch. 24. As 10th lord (Gemini, Sagittarius), Sl. 117: one of royal birth "will become a king", an ordinary person "equal to a king", with wealth and children - and Mercury or Jupiter is then lord of two angles in a trine. As 4th lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 45: dear to all, devoted to God, virtuous, honoured, happy. As 2nd lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 21: wealthy, diligent, skilful, sickly in childhood and happy later. As 12th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 141: disrespect for elders, enmity with friends. As 8th lord (Cancer), Sl. 93, and 6th lord (Leo), Sl. 69, adverse. Sl. 145-148 combine each with Sl. 81.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the share of Sl. 81.
  • Nature: under Ch. 34, owning the 7th weakens a benefic's benefic force (Venus most) and softens a malefic's malefic force.
  • Association: the 9th is aspected from the 3rd, and specially by Mars (6th, 2nd), Jupiter (5th, 1st) and Saturn (7th, 12th) - see drishti.

Because the 9th is the father's house in BPHS, planet-level texts about the 9th often speak of the father too. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary on Mars in the 9th reports a harsh sutra and then exempts Mars when it is the Lagna lord (Aries, Scorpio rising) or rules the 5th (Sagittarius, Cancer), the 4th and 9th (Leo) or the 2nd and 9th (Pisces). Mars as 7th lord in the 9th - Taurus and Libra rising - is not on that list. The commentator adds that three of those cases give "a powerful Rajayoga"; all three involve Mars owning a trine, which is the condition BPHS Ch. 34 also rewards.

The same logic explains why the 7th lord's Kendra ownership is weighed so carefully in this placement. A planet that owns only the 7th and sits in the 9th is an angle lord in a trine, the Sl. 11-12 relation. A planet that owns the 7th and also a trine - which happens for no Ascendant, since the sign 7th from the rising sign and the signs 5th or 9th from it never share a ruler - would be a yogakaraka by Sl. 13. So for this lord the yoga reading always rests on the relation, never on double ownership.

The spouse, as always in BPHS, is also read from the Navamsa.

Worked example: Libra rising, Mars in Gemini

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 11 July 1985, 12:57 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Libra 1.01.

  • With Libra rising, the 7th house is Aries and the 2nd is Scorpio, both ruled by Mars - the lord of both maraka houses. The 9th is Gemini.
  • Mars is in Gemini at 27.37 degrees, Punarvasu pada 3, in the 9th. The engine marks it Neutral and combust.
  • The Sun, ruler of the 11th for Libra rising, is beside it at Gemini 25.29.
  • The 9th lord, Mercury, is in Cancer in the 10th.

Mars here carries Sl. 81 as 7th lord and Sl. 21 as 2nd lord in Dharm (wealthy, diligent, skilful; sickly in childhood, happy later); the two concern different subjects, so both stand by Sl. 145-148. Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 name Jupiter, the Sun and Mars as malefics for Tula Lagn and call Mars "a killer" - the maraka sense, natural for the lord of both the 2nd and 7th. Mars is combust beside the 11th lord, the "quarter" end of BPHS's scale. The engine's yoga detector reports Sasa Yoga for Saturn in the Lagna and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga between the Moon and Saturn, and nothing that names Mars.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 9th house in 276, or 9.2%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 9th lord in the 7th (Sl. 103), is summarised above; together the two lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana), an exchange of an angle lord and a trine lord that Ch. 34 lists first among yoga-forming relations. One house back, the 7th lord in the 8th (Sl. 80) is harsh; one house on, the 7th lord in the 10th (Sl. 82) is the other partly favourable case. The other trine placement is the 7th lord in the 5th.

Questions about the 7th lord in the 9th

What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 9th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 81: union with many women, good will toward one's own spouse, and many undertakings. Scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148); not a prediction.
Is it a Raja Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 count an angle lord in a trine as yoga-forming, unless the planet also owns an evil house (Sl. 15). This app's Kendra-Kona detector requires the lords to be conjunct or in mutual aspect.
Which Ascendants give the most favourable combination?
By the second lordship, Gemini and Sagittarius (the 10th-lord verse, Sl. 117) and Virgo and Pisces (the 4th-lord verse, Sl. 45). By sign alone, Taurus (Mars exalted).
Does it say anything about the father?
Sl. 81 does not. Planet-level texts on the 9th sometimes do, with their own exceptions.
How common is it?
276 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.2%.
