In short
The 7th lord in the 5th house carries the ruler of marriage and partnership into the house of children, intelligence and merit. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 77 reads it warmly: honoured, possessed of the principal virtues, always cheerful and wealthy. An angle lord in a trine is also one of the relations Ch. 34 counts as forming a yoga, unless the planet also owns an evil house.
What the placement means
The 7th house lord rules the sign opposite the Ascendant. Placed in the 5th sign, it takes the 7th's business - spouse, partners, agreements - into the house of children, learning, judgement, devotion and the merit of past action.
Counted from the 7th, the 5th is the 11th house: the lord stands in the house of gain reckoned from its own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, it has gone from an angle to a trine. Both counts are favourable, and so is BPHS's verse; the reverse placement is favourable too, which makes the 5th-7th link one of the most consistently warm pairings in Ch. 24.
The two houses involved
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra - marriage, partnerships, the public - and a maraka house in Ch. 44.
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona - children, intelligence, devotion - and one of the two houses Ch. 34 calls "specially for wealth".
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 77
Sl. 77 reads: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Putr Bhava, the native will be honourable, endowed with all (i.e. seven principal) virtues, always delighted and endowed with all kinds of wealth." It is unconditional and wholly favourable; the parenthesis is the translator's.
The verse says nothing about the spouse or the children, the two most obvious subjects. Instead it describes the person: honour, virtue, cheerfulness, wealth. One way to read it is that the 7th lord, sitting in the house of merit and in the 11th from its own sign, delivers gain to the native generally; but BPHS gives no reason, and that is this page's reading of the structure.
The reverse, Sl. 55 - Putr's lord in Yuvati - is as warm: honourable, very religious, happy through children and helpful to others. Both directions favour the native; only Sl. 55 names children.
An angle lord in a trine, and the exception
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 list the relations that "cause a Yog", and they include a Kon lord in a Kendr "or vice versa" - an angle lord in a trine. The 7th lord in the 5th meets that. Sl. 15 withholds the yoga when the planet also owns an evil house, and Sl. 2-7 add a sharper note for one row: if the lord of the 8th also owns the 7th (as Saturn does for Cancer rising), it "will prove specifically harmful". This app's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga detector is narrower than Sl. 11-12 - the two lords conjunct or in mutual aspect - so the placement alone is not flagged. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale everything by strength and combine both lordships.
One commentator's note in this corpus touches the placement. Discussing the Moon in the 5th, the commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras suggests that beauty of the spouse could be read in the 5th "in case the Moon as lord of the 7th is strongly placed in the 5th", giving Capricorn rising - the Moon exalted in Taurus - as the example. That is a commentator's suggestion, not a sutra. The Saravali has no verse here.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 5th sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 7th lord | 5th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | Leo | Enemy sign | 2nd |
| Taurus | Mars | Virgo | Enemy sign | 12th |
| Gemini | Jupiter | Libra | Enemy sign | 10th |
| Cancer | Saturn | Scorpio | Enemy sign | 8th |
| Leo | Saturn | Sagittarius | Neutral | 6th |
| Virgo | Jupiter | Capricorn | Debilitated | 4th |
| Libra | Mars | Aquarius | Neutral | 2nd |
| Scorpio | Venus | Pisces | Exalted | 12th |
| Sagittarius | Mercury | Aries | Neutral | 10th |
| Capricorn | Moon | Taurus | Exalted | none |
| Aquarius | Sun | Gemini | Neutral | none |
| Pisces | Mercury | Cancer | Enemy sign | 4th |
Two rows are exalted: Scorpio rising (Venus, lord of the 7th and 12th, in Pisces) and Capricorn rising (the Moon in Taurus - the commentator's example). Virgo rising puts Jupiter, lord of the 4th and 7th, debilitated in Capricorn. Five rows - Aries through Cancer, and Pisces - are enemy signs, so the bright verse is often carried by an uncomfortable planet.
The second lordship brings another Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Putr. As 4th lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 41: happy, liked by all, virtuous, honourable, with self-earned wealth - reinforcing Sl. 77. As 10th lord (Gemini, Sagittarius), Sl. 113: learning, delight, wealth and sons - also reinforcing. As 2nd lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 17: wealth, with sons intent on earning. As 12th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 137: bereft of sons and learning. As 8th lord (Cancer), Sl. 89: dull-witted, few children, long-lived and wealthy. As 6th lord (Leo), Sl. 65: fluctuating finances and strained ties with children.
Strength changes the reading
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share of Sl. 77.
- Nature: under Ch. 34, owning the 7th weakens a benefic's benefic force and softens a malefic's malefic force.
- Association: the 5th is aspected from the 11th, and specially by Mars (2nd, 10th), Jupiter (1st, 9th) and Saturn (3rd, 8th) - see drishti.
Because the house is the house of children and the planet the lord of the spouse, readers often look at both the 5th lord and the planet's Navamsa sign before drawing anything from this placement. The planet-level pages, such as Saturn in the 5th and Venus in the 5th, describe the planet in the house without lordship.
Ch. 34's Kendra-lord rule interacts with the trine in an interesting way here. A natural benefic owning the 7th - Jupiter for Gemini and Virgo rising, Venus for Aries and Scorpio, Mercury for Sagittarius and Pisces - is the case where Sl. 2-7 say the benefic "will not give benefic effects" by that ownership, and Sl. 8-10 say Venus shows that Kendra-lord maleficence most. Placing it in a trine is the relation Sl. 11-12 reward. The text does not say how those two pull against each other, only that both lordship and relation are to be read. For a malefic 7th lord (Mars, Saturn, the Sun), ownership of the angle already softens it, and the trine placement is the Sl. 11-12 relation on top of that.
Worked example: Cancer rising, Saturn in Scorpio
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart, which can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 6 February 1985, 16:28 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Cancer 4.31.
- With Cancer rising, the 7th house is Capricorn and the 8th is Aquarius; Saturn rules both. The 5th is Scorpio.
- Saturn is in Scorpio at 3.76 degrees, Anuradha pada 1, in the 5th. The engine marks it Enemy sign; it is neither retrograde nor combust.
- No planet joins it and none aspects the 5th by the engine's whole-sign rule.
- The 5th lord, Mars, is in Pisces in the 9th - a trine lord in a trine.
This chart is the hard case for Sl. 77. Saturn owns the 7th and the 8th, which Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 single out as "specifically harmful", and Sl. 15 says such a lord does not make a Raj Yog by mere relation. Ch. 34 Sl. 27-28 call Saturn and the Sun "killers" for Kark Lagn - the maraka sense. Saturn is in an enemy sign. So Sl. 77 arrives at reduced strength, alongside Sl. 89 for the 8th lord in Putr (few children, long life, wealth). The engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Venus and Mars and nothing that names Saturn.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 5th house in 288, or 9.6%. That is a count of moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse is linked above; when the 5th and 7th lords sit in each other's signs, the exchange (parivartana) is on Ch. 34's list of yoga-forming relations. One house back, the 7th lord in the 4th (Sl. 76) gives an independent spouse; one house on, the 7th lord in the 6th (Sl. 78) is among the harshest. The other trine placement is the 7th lord in the 9th.
- Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
- Check the birth chart for the 7th lord in the 5th sign, and note its dignity.
- If the planet also owns the 8th, 6th or 12th, Ch. 34 Sl. 15 withholds the yoga reading.
Questions about the 7th lord in the 5th
- What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 5th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 77: honourable, endowed with the principal virtues, always cheerful and wealthy. Sl. 145-148 scale it by strength.
- Is it a Raja Yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 count an angle lord in a trine as yoga-forming, unless the planet also owns an evil house (Sl. 15). This app's Kendra-Kona detector needs the two lords conjunct or in mutual aspect.
- Does it say anything about children or the spouse?
- Sl. 77 does not. Its reverse, Sl. 55, mentions happiness through children; a Bhrigu Sutras commentator links a strong 7th lord in the 5th with the spouse's beauty.
- Which Ascendants give the strongest lord here?
- Scorpio (Venus exalted in Pisces) and Capricorn (the Moon exalted in Taurus). Virgo gives Jupiter debilitated.
- How common is it?
- 288 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.6%.
