House lords

The lord of the 7th house placed in the 4th: the BPHS verse on an independent spouse and a truthful, religious native, the second-lordship verses for every Ascendant, and an engine-computed chart.

In short

The 7th lord in the 4th house places the ruler of marriage and partnership in the house of home, mother and inner ease, one angle in another. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 76 reads it as a spouse who is not under the native's control, beside a native who loves truth, is intelligent and religious, with a classical note about the teeth. Strength and the other lordship decide how much applies.

What the placement means

The 7th house lord rules the sign opposite the Ascendant. Placed in the 4th sign, it brings the 7th's concerns - the spouse, partners, agreements, the public - into the house of the mother, the home, land and vehicles, and the settled mind.

Counted from the 7th, the 4th is the 10th house - an angle from the lord's own sign, the strongest position in that count. Counted from the Ascendant, both houses are angles. Of the twelve placements of the 7th lord, this is one of four that keep it inside the angles (with the 1st, the 10th and its own 7th), and BPHS's verse for it is mild.

The two houses involved

The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra: marriage, partnership, trade, the public.

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is also a kendra: the mother, home, property, conveyances, schooling and contentment.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 76

Sl. 76 reads: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Bandhu Bhava, the wife of the native will not be under his control. He will be fond of truth, intelligent and religious. He will suffer from dental diseases." One clause concerns the spouse, three the native's character, one the body.

The spouse clause is the text's framing for its time and audience; in neutral terms it describes a partner who is independent of the native. The character clauses - truthfulness, intelligence, religion - are favourable and may reflect the 4th as a house of inner contentment and learning, though BPHS gives no reason. The dental clause is a classical bodily association, reported as what the text says and not as medical advice. None of this is a forecast about any reader's marriage.

The reverse is unusual. Sl. 43, Bandhu's lord in Yuvati, says the native will have "a high degree of education", will give up the patrimony and will be "akin to the dumb in an assembly" - learned but silent in public. Between them, the two verses place the 4th-7th link around learning and a certain reserve.

Two angles, one planet

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say benefics owning angles lose benefic force, malefics owning angles lose malefic force, and the 7th and 10th are the angles "specially for happiness". For Virgo and Pisces rising, one planet (Jupiter, Mercury) owns both the 4th and the 7th, and the placement is that planet in its own 4th-house sign - a planet ruling two angles, standing in one. The Kendra-lord rule bears most heavily on exactly these rows, where a natural benefic owns two angles. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then scale by strength and combine lordships. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse for this placement.

The 7th lord and the 4th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

The dignity spread is wide. Two rows are exalted: Cancer rising (Saturn, lord of the 7th and 8th, in Libra) and Libra rising (Mars, lord of the 2nd and 7th, in Capricorn). Virgo and Pisces rising keep the lord in its own sign. Sagittarius rising puts Mercury, lord of the 7th and 10th, debilitated in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs.

The second lordship adds a second Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Bandhu, and here they range from glowing to bleak. As 4th lord at home (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 40: a minister, all kinds of wealth, skilful, virtuous, learned, happy and "well disposed to his spouse" - which pulls directly against Sl. 76's spouse clause, so by Sl. 145-148 the two cancel on that point. As 10th lord (Gemini, Sagittarius), Sl. 112: happy, devoted to the mother's welfare, lord of lands and conveyances. As 2nd lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 16: all kinds of wealth. As 12th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 136: losses of lands, conveyances and houses. As 8th lord (Cancer), Sl. 88, and as 6th lord (Leo), Sl. 64, both adverse about the mother.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share.
  • Nature: under Ch. 34, a benefic 7th lord loses benefic force by owning an angle and a malefic one loses malefic force.
  • Association: the 4th is aspected from the 10th, and specially by Mars (1st, 9th), Jupiter (12th, 8th) and Saturn (2nd, 7th) - see drishti.

Because the verse names the spouse, BPHS's own instruction to read the spouse from the Navamsa (Ch. 7) applies. The planet-level pages - Venus in the 4th, Jupiter in the 4th - describe the planet in the house without lordship.

Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 add the natural classes, and with this lord they matter. Jupiter (Gemini, Virgo rising), Venus (Aries, Scorpio) and Mercury (Sagittarius, Pisces) are benefics or neutral by nature and, under Sl. 2-7, lose some benefic force by owning the 7th; the same verses say that in revealing that kind of Kendra-lord maleficence, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are "significant in the ascending order" - Venus most of all. Mars (Taurus, Libra), Saturn (Cancer, Leo) and the Sun (Aquarius) are malefics whose maleficence is softened by the same ownership. For Capricorn rising the 7th lord is the Moon, ruling nothing else. BPHS gives Sl. 76 the same wording for all of them; the natural class is a reason to weigh it differently, not a different verse.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Venus in Aquarius

This is the engine's first search moment, re-enterable in the birth chart calculator: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Scorpio 28.81.

  • With Scorpio rising, the 7th house is Taurus and the 12th is Libra, both ruled by Venus. The 4th is Aquarius.
  • Venus is in Aquarius at 2.74 degrees, Dhanishta pada 3, in the 4th. The engine marks it Friendly sign; it is not retrograde or combust.
  • Mars, the Lagna lord (and 6th lord), is with it at Aquarius 11.51.
  • The 4th lord, Saturn, is in Scorpio in the 1st, so Mars and Saturn have exchanged signs.

Venus carries Sl. 76 as 7th lord and Sl. 136 as 12th lord in Bandhu (losses of lands, conveyances and houses). They speak of different things, so both stand, at Venus's friendly strength. Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 list Venus among the malefics for Vrischik Lagn. The engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga whose members include Venus and Mars - the 7th lord (an angle lord) beside the Lagna lord (lord of both an angle and a trine) - and a Parivarthana Yoga between Mars and Saturn. Those come from the planets' relations, not from Sl. 76.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 4th house in 236, or 7.9%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 4th lord in the 7th (Sl. 43), is summarised above; together the two lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house back, the 7th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 75) concerns children; one house on, the 7th lord in the 5th (Sl. 77) is among the brightest Yuvati verses. The other angle placements are the 1st and the 10th.

Questions about the 7th lord in the 4th

What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 4th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 76: a spouse not under the native's control; the native fond of truth, intelligent and religious; dental complaints. Scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148); the health clause is not medical advice.
Does it mean an unhappy marriage?
Sl. 76 describes an independent spouse, not unhappiness. It is the text's statement about a combination; this app does not predict marriages.
Which Ascendants make one planet lord of both the 4th and 7th?
Virgo (Jupiter) and Pisces (Mercury). There the placement is that planet in its own 4th-house sign, and Sl. 40 - "well disposed to his spouse" - cancels Sl. 76's spouse clause.
Which Ascendants give the strongest lord here?
Cancer (Saturn exalted in Libra) and Libra (Mars exalted in Capricorn). Sagittarius gives Mercury debilitated.
How common is it?
236 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.9%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people, and is close to the one-in-twelve that a single house out of twelve would suggest.
