In short

Neecha, or debilitation, is the sign opposite a graha's exaltation, where the classical texts rate it lowest: Libra for the Sun, Scorpio for the Moon, Cancer for Mars, Pisces for Mercury, Capricorn for Jupiter, Virgo for Venus and Aries for Saturn. This app labels a planet anywhere in that sign "Debilitated" and applies no cancellation rule.

What the term means

Neecha means "low". A graha's debilitation sign is the seventh from its exaltation sign, and the classical texts rank it at the bottom of the dignity ladder. It is a statement about one factor, the sign. A debilitated planet still has its house, its aspects, its lordships and its periods, and the rest of the chart is read as usual.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 places each graha's debilitation in the seventh sign from its exaltation, with the deepest fall at the same degree as the deepest exaltation. Sl. 59-60 put the good effects of a debilitated graha at nil, and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 25-26 calls it "futile" there. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4 carries the idea into a yoga: Gaj Kesari forms only if Jupiter avoids debilitation, combustion and an enemy's sign.

How this app uses it

  • The engine labels a planet anywhere in its debilitation sign "Debilitated". It sits at the bottom of the scale with a position strength of 0 of 10 in the app's Shad Bala.
  • In a 1985-06-05, 02:29 IST New Delhi chart Jupiter is in Capricorn and reads "debilitated in Capricorn, panapara house (11th)", for a total of 3.67 of 20 and the band Weak.
  • A debilitated house lord marks that house "testing" in the house list. A debilitated Mahadasha lord grades the period "challenging". A debilitated Jupiter does not form Gaj Kesari Yoga.
  • The engine computes no Neecha Bhanga, the cancellation of debilitation. A fallen planet is reported as fallen, and any strength elsewhere in the chart shows up in its own lines.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
