Neecha Bhanga defined: the idea that a debilitation can be cancelled, where the rules appear in this site's sources, and why this app does not apply them.

In short

Neecha Bhanga means "cancellation of debilitation": the idea that a fallen graha is lifted when certain other conditions hold, such as its sign lord sitting in an angle. The BPHS and Saravali texts this site uses give no such rule. This app computes none, and a debilitated planet is always reported as debilitated.

What the term means

Neecha Bhanga joins neecha, "fall", and bhanga, "breaking". It names a set of conditions under which a debilitated graha is said to have its debilitation cancelled. When the cancellation is taken further and read as a rise in fortune, it is called Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga. Different authors list different conditions; most involve the lord of the debilitation sign, or of the exaltation sign, and its relation to the Lagna or the Moon.

Where the term comes from

The two classical texts this site draws on most do not contain it. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 defines debilitation and moves on; a search of both BPHS copies and of Saravali in the corpus finds no cancellation rule. The term does appear in Advanced Predictive Astrology, Vol. 1, a modern case-study book, which names the yoga in its examples and states conditions in passing: a debilitated planet whose sign lord is in an angle from both the Lagna and the Moon (p. 39), and one where the lord of the sign in which it would be exalted is in an angle from the Moon (p. 128). The book applies these to individual charts; it does not set out a complete rule.

How this app uses it

It does not. The engine labels a planet anywhere in its fall sign "Debilitated", gives it 0 of 10 for position in its Shad Bala, and has no test that lifts the label. There is no Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga among the yogas it detects. In a 1985-06-05, 02:29 IST New Delhi chart, Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn while Saturn, Capricorn's lord, is exalted in Libra. Some cancellation lists would count that. The engine still reports Jupiter as debilitated and Weak, and Saturn's strength appears in Saturn's own line, at 15.96 of 20. The sources page lists the texts the engine's rules are taken from.
