House lords

The 4th lord placed in the 7th house: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 43 (learning, a lost patrimony, silence in assemblies), the Ch. 15 rule on the mother's happiness, the reverse verse, the 12-Ascendant table and an engine-computed Gemini-rising chart with four planets in Sagittarius.

In short

The 4th lord in the 7th house moves the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles into the angle of marriage, partnership and trade. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 43 reads it as a high degree of education, giving up an inheritance, and being "akin to the dumb in an assembly". Both houses are angles, and for Virgo and Pisces rising the 4th lord also owns the 7th.

What the placement means

The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, vehicles and contentment. In the 7th house it sits in the angle of the spouse, partners, trade and travel, the house where the chart reads the other person. The home is placed in the house of relationship.

Both houses are Kendras, and the 7th is the 4th counted from the 4th, an angle from its own house. An angle lord in an angle does not form the angle-trine yoga of BPHS Ch. 34, but it does meet the angle conditions of several 4th-house rules in Ch. 15.

The two houses involved

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.

The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is the wife, travel, trade, loss of sight and death in Ch. 11 Sl. 8. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 7th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 43 says that with the 4th lord in the 7th the native "will be endowed with a high degree of education, will sacrifice his patrimony and be akin to the dumb in an assembly". bphs-alt.txt has the same wording.

The verse is one of the more puzzling in the chapter. Education is not among the 4th's or the 7th's significations in Ch. 11. "Sacrifice his patrimony" ties the 4th's lands and treasure to the 7th without saying how or to whom. "Akin to the dumb in an assembly" describes reticence in public, which sits oddly beside a high education. This page reports all three clauses as the text's statements, without converting them into predictions.

The 4th-house chapter gives the angle placement more weight. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 7 says the native's mother will be happy if the 4th lord is in an angle, Venus is also in an angle and Mercury is exalted. The 7th is an angle, so this placement meets the first condition. Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 reads benefics related to the 4th lord as good for vehicles. The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus say a 4th lord exalted or in its own sign, in an angle or trine, gives high-class conveyances; in the 7th that depends only on dignity.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds that benefics owning angles lose benefic force and malefics owning them lose malefic force; a 4th lord in the 7th always owns one angle and occupies another. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 43 by strength and reads both lordships. For the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7 points to the Navamsa. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 7th lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 76), reads: a spouse not under the native's control, a love of truth, intelligence and religion, and a classical mention of dental trouble that is not a medical statement. The two verses share an intellectual note (education in Sl. 43, intelligence in Sl. 76) and nothing else. When both happen together the lords have exchanged signs between two angles, which the engine reports as a Parivartana Yoga framed as favourable.

The 4th lord and the 7th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

For Virgo and Pisces rising one planet owns both the 4th and 7th (Jupiter for Virgo, Mercury for Pisces), so it is in its own sign in the 7th; for Pisces rising Mercury in Virgo can be exalted. Two rows give debilitation: Libra rising (Saturn in Aries) and Capricorn rising (Mars in Cancer). Libra's case is notable because Saturn is the yogakaraka there. Two rows are enemy signs (Sagittarius, Aquarius), three friendly and three neutral.

For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 4th lord is also the Lagna lord, so Ch. 24 Sl. 7 (the Lagna lord in the 7th) applies to the same planet. That verse splits on the planet's nature, and for both Ascendants the planet (Mercury, Jupiter) is a benefic, so it falls on the branch that speaks of wandering and hardship, or kingship if the planet is strong. This page summarises it as the text's claim. Pisces rising brings the 7th lordship and Ch. 24 Sl. 79 (the 7th lord in the 7th: happiness through the spouse, courage, skill) alongside.

The remaining second lordships bring more of Ch. 24's 7th-house verses into play, which Sl. 145-148 says to read with Sl. 43. Summarised: for Leo and Aquarius rising the 4th lord also owns the 9th, and Sl. 103 speaks of happiness after marriage, virtue and fame; for Libra it owns the 5th, and Sl. 55 speaks of honour, religion and happiness through children; for Cancer and Capricorn it owns the 11th, and Sl. 127 speaks of gain through the spouse's relatives; for Scorpio it owns the 3rd, and Sl. 31 speaks of service to those in power. Most of these are warmer than Sl. 43 itself, which is a reminder that the verse for the 4th lordship is only one part of what the planet carries.

Strength changes the reading

Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 43. Aspects on the 7th come from the 1st by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 3rd and 11th, Mars from the 4th and 12th, and Saturn from the 5th and 10th. A 4th lord in the 7th always aspects the Lagna in return. Ch. 15 Sl. 7's other two conditions (Venus in an angle, Mercury exalted) are worth checking alongside.

Worked example: Gemini rising, Mercury in Sagittarius

The engine's deterministic search returned: 9 January 1986, 17:17 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Gemini 20.93. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Gemini rising makes Virgo the 4th, so Mercury is the 4th lord. It is also the Lagna lord.
  • Mercury is in Sagittarius at 11.81 degrees, Mula pada 4: the 7th house. Not retrograde; the engine marks it combust, with dignity "Friendly sign".
  • The Moon (11.30), the Sun (25.27) and Venus (22.85, combust) are all in Sagittarius too: four planets in the 7th.
  • No graha other than the nodes aspects the 7th. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn in the 8th.

Mercury here is both the Lagna lord and the 4th lord in the 7th, so Sl. 7 and Sl. 43 both apply. Ch. 15 Sl. 7's mother condition is met in two of three parts: the 4th lord is in an angle, and Venus is in an angle (the same 7th); Mercury is not exalted. Mercury is combust, which reduces it under Sl. 145-148, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 says Mercury takes the nature of its company, here a mix: the Sun (a malefic), Venus (a benefic) and the Moon, which, about 14 degrees from the Sun, is a new Moon and counted as a malefic. The engine's yoga detector reports Sarala Yoga for Saturn, the 8th lord, sitting in the 6th, unrelated to this placement.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 7th house in 264, or 8.8%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 7th lord in the 4th house. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 6th and the 4th lord in the 8th; the other angles are covered by the 1st and the 10th. The Navamsa calculator computes the chart BPHS uses for the spouse. For the worked example's planet see Mercury in the 7th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
