In short
The 4th lord in the 8th house moves the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles into the dusthana of longevity, hidden matters and sudden events. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 44 is critical, speaking of a lack of domestic comfort and of happiness from the parents. Its reverse is harsher still, and the Bhrigu Sutras read a 4th lord in the 8th as weakening property, though by sign most Ascendants place the lord in a friendly sign here.
What the placement means
The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, vehicles and inner contentment. In the 8th house it sits in the house of longevity, sudden events, hidden matters and the wealth of the dead. The house of security places its lord in the house of uncertainty.
The 8th is a dusthana and the 5th counted from the 4th. BPHS does not use that second counting here; both its verse for this placement and its verse for the reverse read the link between the 4th and 8th as a loss of comfort.
The two houses involved
The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.
The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead and things past and to come in Ch. 11 Sl. 9. The house pages develop both.
What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 8th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 44 says that with the 4th lord in the 8th the native "will be devoid of domestic and other comforts" and "will not enjoy much parental happiness", and it adds a further clause about the native's manhood that this page summarises rather than repeats. bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
The verse reads the 4th's comforts as lost in the 8th. It names domestic comfort first, the 4th's core meaning, and extends the loss to both parents. It is reported here as the text's statement about a type, not as a forecast about any person's home, parents or body; nothing on this page is medical advice.
The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus agree in direction for the 4th's possessions: a 4th lord "placed in a bad house (3, 6, 8 or 12)", or with malefics, gives a low type of conveyance, no land of one's own and residence in other people's houses. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 6-7 read the mother's long life and happiness from an exalted 4th lord or a 4th lord in an angle, and the 8th is not an angle. Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 read benefic and malefic relations to the 4th lord for vehicles.
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the 8th lord is not auspicious, but that concerns the 8th lord, not the 4th lord visiting the 8th. Ch. 44 counts the 8th, with the 3rd, as a house of longevity; this app makes no longevity reading. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 44 by strength and reads both of the planet's lordships. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse, the 8th lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 88), is harsher: in summary, separation from the mother, no house, lands or happiness, and betrayal of friends; the translation adds "doubtlessly". Both verses read the 4th-8th link as a loss of home and of a parent's presence. These are the text's claims, reported briefly. When both placements occur together, the two lords have exchanged signs, and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga, framed as mixed unless the 8th lord also owns an angle or trine.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 4th lord in the 8th sign:
| Ascendant | 4th lord | Other house it rules | 8th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Moon | none | Scorpio | Debilitated |
| Taurus | Sun | none | Sagittarius | Friendly sign |
| Gemini | Mercury | 1st (Gemini) | Capricorn | Neutral |
| Cancer | Venus | 11th (Taurus) | Aquarius | Friendly sign |
| Leo | Mars | 9th (Aries) | Pisces | Friendly sign |
| Virgo | Jupiter | 7th (Pisces) | Aries | Friendly sign |
| Libra | Saturn | 5th (Aquarius) | Taurus | Friendly sign |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 3rd (Capricorn) | Gemini | Friendly sign |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | 1st (Sagittarius) | Cancer | Exalted |
| Capricorn | Mars | 11th (Scorpio) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Aquarius | Venus | 9th (Libra) | Virgo | Debilitated |
| Pisces | Mercury | 7th (Virgo) | Libra | Friendly sign |
By sign this table is much stronger than the verse. Eight Ascendants give a friendly sign, and Sagittarius rising gives exaltation: Jupiter, lord of the 1st and 4th, in Cancer, so the Lagna lord is exalted in the 8th as well. Two rows give debilitation: Aries rising (the Moon in Scorpio) and Aquarius rising (Venus in Virgo). Gemini rising alone is neutral.
The yogakaraka cases are mixed. For Leo rising Mars (the 4th and 9th lord) is in Pisces, friendly. For Libra rising Saturn (the 4th and 5th lord) is in Taurus, friendly. For Aquarius rising Venus (the 4th and 9th lord) is debilitated in Virgo. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 calls an angle-and-trine owner specially a yogakaraka, but Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 still reads the planet's placement in the 8th through Sl. 44 and the matching verse for its trine lordship.
Those matching verses are mostly as guarded as Sl. 44, which is characteristic of the 8th in Ch. 24. In brief: Sl. 104 (the 9th lord in the 8th, for Leo and Aquarius rising) speaks of limited prosperity; Sl. 56 (the 5th lord, for Libra) of limited happiness from children; Sl. 80 (the 7th lord, for Virgo and Pisces) of limited happiness in marriage; Sl. 128 (the 11th lord, for Cancer and Capricorn) of reversals in undertakings alongside a long life; Sl. 32 (the 3rd lord, for Scorpio) is the severe verse discussed on the 3rd-lord page; and Sl. 8 (the Lagna lord, for Gemini and Sagittarius) opens with scholarship. All are summarised as the text's statements and none is applied to a person.
Strength changes the reading
Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 44, and company also decides the Bhrigu Sutras' malefic clause. Aspects on the 8th come from the 2nd by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 4th and 12th, Mars from the 5th and 1st, and Saturn from the 6th and 11th. A 4th lord in the 8th aspects the 2nd, the house of family wealth.
Worked example: Leo rising, the yogakaraka Mars in Pisces
The engine's deterministic search returned: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 15.68. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Leo rising makes Scorpio the 4th, so Mars is the 4th lord; Mars also owns Aries, the 9th, which makes it the yogakaraka.
- Mars is in Pisces at 15.99 degrees, Uttara Bhadrapada pada 4: the 8th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Friendly sign".
- Venus, exalted, is in Pisces at 17.46, under two degrees from Mars.
- The 8th lord, Jupiter, is debilitated in Capricorn in the 6th, which the engine reports as Sarala Yoga. Nothing other than the nodes aspects the 8th.
Mars carries two lordships into the 8th, so Sl. 44 and Sl. 104 (the 9th lord in the 8th: not prosperous, no happiness from an elder brother) both apply under Sl. 145-148. Mars is friendly and joined by an exalted benefic, which the Bhrigu Sutras' rule and Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 would count on the favourable side of company, but the house itself is one the Bhrigu Sutras name. This chart was also used on the page for the 3rd lord in the 8th, where the same Venus-Mars conjunction met a Ch. 14 rule about siblings; here it is the 4th and 9th lordships of Mars that matter. As everywhere, the text's rules are laid out and no statement about a person is made.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 8th house in 205, or 6.8%, below the one-in-twelve an even spread would give. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 8th lord in the 4th house. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 7th and the 4th lord in the 9th; the other dusthana cases are the 6th and the 12th. For the worked example's planet see Mars in the 8th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 4th lord in the 8th house
- What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 8th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 44 is critical: a lack of domestic comfort and of happiness from the parents, with a further clause this page summarises. It is reported as the text's statement only.
- Does it mean losing my home?
- No single rule is a forecast. Both BPHS and the Bhrigu Sutras read the placement as weakening the 4th's comforts; this app reports those rules and does not predict property or family events.
- Why is the dignity table so much better than the verse?
- Dignity depends on the sign, and most 4th lords happen to be friendly with the 8th sign's ruler. BPHS scales the verse by that strength, so a strong 4th lord carries more of whatever Sl. 44 indicates.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest planet here?
- Sagittarius rising, where Jupiter (Lagna and 4th lord) is exalted in Cancer. Aries and Aquarius rising give debilitated 4th lords.
- How common is it?
- 205 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (6.8%) in the engine's sample.
