House lords

The lord of the 8th house placed in the 4th: the harsh BPHS verse on the mother and home, the second-lordship verses that offset it, the planet for each Ascendant and a worked chart with an exalted Saturn.

In short

The 8th lord in the 4th house brings the ruler of obstruction and loss into the house of the mother, home, land and inner contentment. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 88 reads it harshly: the mother's absence in childhood, a lack of house, land and happiness, and disloyalty to friends. It is the text's claim about a combination, scaled by strength and often offset by the planet's other lordship.

What the placement means

The 8th house lord rules the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 4th sign, it carries the 8th's themes - loss, obstruction, sudden change - into the house of the mother, the home, land and vehicles, early schooling and the settled mind.

Counted from the 8th, the 4th is the 9th: a trine from the lord's own sign, which by that count is a comfortable position. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has entered an angle. The verse itself takes the second view and is one of the harshest in the Randhr series.

The two houses involved

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44.

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is a kendra: the mother, home, property, conveyances and contentment.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 88

Sl. 88 reads: "If Randhr's Lord is in Bandhu Bhava, the child will be deprived of its mother. He will be devoid of a house, lands and happiness and will doubtlessly betray his friends." Every clause is adverse, and the verse is unusually emphatic ("doubtlessly").

Briefly, and as the text's claim: each clause removes one of the 4th's goods - the mother, the dwelling, land, happiness - and the last turns the 4th's sense of loyalty and belonging against the native. This is a classical statement about a combination, not a forecast about anyone's mother or family, and this app does not make such predictions.

The reverse is in the same register. Sl. 44, Bandhu's lord in Randhr, describes a lack of domestic comforts and little parental happiness, with a further harsh clause this page leaves summarised. Both directions of the 4th-8th link are adverse in BPHS, and both touch the parents.

The 8th-lord rule

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the 8th lord "is not auspicious", "specifically harmful" if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, auspicious if it also owns a trine, and "not evil" if it is the Sun or the Moon. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale Sl. 88 by strength and combine it with the second lordship's verse, contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse for this placement.

The 8th lord and the 4th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Two rows are exalted: Cancer rising (Saturn, lord of the 7th and 8th, in Libra) and Capricorn rising (the Sun in Aries). Aries rising puts Mars - both Lagna lord and 8th lord - debilitated in Cancer. Most other rows are friendly. By Ch. 34's rule, the trine-owning rows are Aries and Libra (the Lagna), Gemini (the 9th), Leo and Aquarius (the 5th); the "specifically harmful" ones Taurus and Scorpio (11th), Cancer (7th), Virgo and Pisces (3rd).

The second lordship's verse for a lord in Bandhu often contradicts Sl. 88 head on. As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 4: "endowed with paternal and maternal happiness". As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 100: houses, conveyances, happiness, devotion to the mother. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 124: gains from maternal relatives, house and lands. As 5th lord (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 52: happiness, maternal happiness, wealth, intelligence. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 28: happy, wealthy, intelligent. As 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 76: a spouse not under one's control. Where they contradict Sl. 88 - on the mother, home and happiness - Sl. 145-148 say the results cancel.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label. Read literally, a strong lord gives more of whatever it carries.
  • The second lordship, as above - the main counterweight to Sl. 88.
  • Association: the 4th is aspected from the 10th, and specially by Mars (1st, 9th), Jupiter (12th, 8th) and Saturn (2nd, 7th) - see drishti.

The planet's own nature adds a further layer. An 8th lord that is strong in an angle can also form a Pancha Mahapurusha yoga in this app's engine (an own-sign or exalted Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in a kendra), as the worked example below shows. That is a separate rule from Sl. 88. For the planets in this house without lordship, see Saturn in the 4th and Mars in the 4th.

Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10's natural classes complete the picture. The 8th lord in the 4th is a malefic for Aries and Virgo (Mars), Gemini and Cancer (Saturn) and Capricorn (the Sun); a benefic for Taurus and Leo (Jupiter) and Libra and Pisces (Venus); Mercury for Scorpio and Aquarius; and the Moon for Sagittarius. For the Sagittarius and Capricorn rows Ch. 34 adds that the luminaries' 8th lordship "is not evil", and both luminaries rule nothing else, so for those two Ascendants Sl. 88 stands alone at whatever strength the Moon or Sun has. The Capricorn row is also one of the two exalted rows - the Sun in Aries - which by Sl. 145-148 means the full share of a verse the text itself does not soften.

Where the 8th lord also owns an angle - the 1st for Aries and Libra rising, the 7th for Cancer - Ch. 34's Kendra-lord rule applies to that second ownership as well: a benefic owning an angle loses some benefic force, a malefic loses some malefic force. For Libra the planet is Venus, a benefic; for Aries and Cancer it is Mars or Saturn, malefics.

Worked example: Cancer rising, Saturn exalted in Libra

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 23 June 1985, 07:43 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Cancer 7.22.

  • With Cancer rising, the 7th house is Capricorn and the 8th is Aquarius; Saturn rules both. The 4th is Libra.
  • Saturn is in Libra at 28.64 degrees, Vishakha pada 3, in the 4th. The engine marks it Exalted and retrograde.
  • Ketu shares the 4th at Libra 22.34.
  • The 4th lord, Venus, is in Aries in the 10th, facing the 4th and aspecting it.

This is the "specifically harmful" row of Ch. 34 (the 8th lord also owning the 7th), and Ch. 34 Sl. 27-28 call Saturn a "killer" for Kark Lagn - the maraka sense. Sl. 88 applies with a strong carrier, and so does Sl. 76 (the 7th lord in Bandhu: an independent spouse, a truthful, religious native). The engine's yoga detector reports Sasa Yoga for Saturn - exalted in an angle - which is the engine's Pancha Mahapurusha rule, not a softening of Sl. 88. It also flags Vimala Yoga for Mercury and Kemadruma for the Moon in this chart.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 4th house in 226, or 7.5%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 4th lord in the 8th (Sl. 44), is summarised above; together the lords would have exchanged signs (parivartana). One house back, the 8th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 87) concerns siblings; one house on, the 8th lord in the 5th (Sl. 89) gives few children but long life and wealth. The other angle placements are the 1st, the 7th and the 10th.

  2. Check the birth chart for the 8th lord in the 4th sign, with its dignity.
  3. Read the second lordship's verse for the 4th beside Sl. 88; where they contradict, Sl. 145-148 say they cancel.

Questions about the 8th lord in the 4th

What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 4th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 88: the mother's absence in childhood, no house, land or happiness, and disloyalty to friends. It is the text's claim about a combination, scaled by strength; this app does not predict family events.
Can anything offset it?
In BPHS's own terms, the second lordship: the Lagna-, 5th-, 9th- and 11th-lord verses for the 4th all speak favourably of the mother or home, and Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel.
Does an exalted 8th lord here form a yoga?
In this app's engine, an exalted or own-sign Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in an angle forms a Pancha Mahapurusha yoga - Sasa for Saturn in the worked example. That is a separate rule from Sl. 88.
Which Ascendant is the weakest case?
Aries: Mars, the Lagna and 8th lord, is debilitated in Cancer. Ch. 34 still classes its double lordship as the auspicious kind.
How common is it?
226 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.5%.
