House lords

The lord of the 8th house placed in the 5th: the mixed BPHS verse on intellect, children, long life and wealth, the Ch. 34 rule for an 8th lord that also owns a trine, the planet for each Ascendant and a worked chart.

In short

The 8th lord in the 5th house brings the ruler of longevity and obstruction into the house of intelligence, children and merit. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 89 is mixed: a slow intellect and few children, but a long life and wealth. For four Ascendants the 8th lord also owns a trine, which Ch. 34 says makes it auspicious.

What the placement means

The 8th house lord rules the 8th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 5th sign, it carries the 8th's themes - longevity, obstruction, inheritance, hidden matters - into the house of intelligence, learning, children and the merit of past action.

Counted from the 8th, the 5th is the 10th house - an angle from the lord's own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has entered a trine. The verse reflects both: it takes from the 5th's own goods (intellect, children) and gives the 8th's good ones (long life, unearned wealth).

The two houses involved

The 8th house (Randhra Bhava) is a dusthana and a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44.

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona - children, intellect, devotion - and one of the two houses Ch. 34 calls "specially for wealth".

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 89

Sl. 89 reads: "If Randhr's Lord is in Putr Bhava, the native will be dull witted, will have limited number of children, be long-lived and wealthy." Two clauses restrict, two reward.

It is one of the clearest two-sided verses in the Randhr series. The restrictive half applies the 8th to the 5th's significations - the mind ("dull witted") and offspring ("limited number"). The rewarding half brings the 8th's own goods into a fortunate house: longevity and wealth, perhaps the unearned wealth the 8th is classically associated with, though the verse does not say which kind. It is the text's statement about a combination, not a forecast about anyone's intellect or family.

The reverse, Sl. 56 - Putr's lord in Randhr - is wholly restrictive: little happiness from children, a chest complaint, anger, unhappiness. Both directions limit children; only Sl. 89 adds longevity and wealth.

An 8th lord that also owns a trine

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the 8th lord's "simultaneous ownership of a Kon will bestow auspicious effects". That applies to this placement more directly than to most: for Leo and Aquarius rising the 8th lord is also the 5th lord (Jupiter, Mercury), so the placement is that planet at home in its own trine; for Gemini it also owns the 9th; for Aries and Libra the Lagna. On the other side, ownership of the 3rd, 7th or 11th makes it "specifically harmful" (Virgo, Pisces; Cancer; Taurus, Scorpio), and the Sun's or Moon's 8th lordship "is not evil". Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale by strength and combine. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus have no verse here.

The 8th lord and the 5th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

This placement has some of the strongest rows in the 8th-lord series. Gemini rising puts Saturn, lord of the 8th and 9th, exalted in Libra - a trine owner at full dignity in a trine. Virgo rising puts Mars (3rd and 8th) exalted in Capricorn. Leo and Aquarius rising keep the lord in its own 5th-house sign. Scorpio rising is the weak row: Mercury, lord of the 8th and 11th, is debilitated in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs.

The second lordship's Ch. 24 verse for a lord in Putr is often favourable. As 9th lord (Gemini), Sl. 101: sons and prosperity, devotion to elders, learning - contradicting Sl. 89 on children and intellect, so they cancel there. As 11th lord (Taurus, Scorpio), Sl. 125: happy, educated, virtuous, religious. As 5th lord at home (Leo, Aquarius), Sl. 53: children if a benefic is related, none if a malefic, and in any case virtuous. As Lagna lord (Aries, Libra), Sl. 5: mediocre happiness from children, anger, favour with rulers. As 3rd lord (Virgo, Pisces), Sl. 29: sons and virtue. As 7th lord (Cancer), Sl. 77: honour, the principal virtues, wealth.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share - of both halves of the verse.
  • The second lordship, classified by Ch. 34 and read through its own verse.
  • Association: the 5th is aspected from the 11th, and specially by Mars (2nd, 10th), Jupiter (1st, 9th) and Saturn (3rd, 8th) - see drishti. Sl. 53, which applies to the Leo and Aquarius rows, makes association decisive for children.

Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10's natural classes add one more layer: the 8th lord is a malefic for Aries and Virgo (Mars), Gemini and Cancer (Saturn) and Capricorn (the Sun), a benefic for Taurus and Leo (Jupiter) and Libra and Pisces (Venus), Mercury for Scorpio and Aquarius, the Moon for Sagittarius. The planet-level pages, such as Saturn in the 5th and Jupiter in the 5th, describe the planet in the house without lordship.

The "long-lived" clause deserves a word, since the 8th is a house of longevity in BPHS Ch. 44 and this is one of the few Randhr verses that names long life outright (Sl. 92, the 8th lord at home, and Sl. 95, the 8th lord with a benefic in the 11th, are the others). In Ch. 24 it is a quality the text attaches to the combination, like wealth; it is not a lifespan calculation, and Ch. 43-44's longevity methods are separate. This app does not compute lifespans, so the clause is reported here as the text's wording and nothing more.

Worked example: Cancer rising, Saturn in Scorpio

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart; re-enter it in the birth chart calculator: 6 February 1985, 16:28 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Cancer 4.31.

  • With Cancer rising, the 8th house is Aquarius and the 7th is Capricorn; Saturn rules both. The 5th is Scorpio.
  • Saturn is in Scorpio at 3.76 degrees, Anuradha pada 1, in the 5th. The engine marks it Enemy sign; it is not retrograde or combust.
  • Nothing joins Saturn and nothing aspects the 5th by the engine's whole-sign rule.
  • The 5th lord, Mars, is in Pisces in the 9th.

Read from the 8th-lord side, this is the "specifically harmful" row of Ch. 34 - an 8th lord that also owns the 7th - and Ch. 34 Sl. 27-28 call Saturn a "killer" for Kark Lagn. Sl. 89 applies at enemy-sign strength, beside Sl. 77 for the 7th lord in Putr, which is one of the brightest Yuvati verses (honour, the principal virtues, constant cheer, wealth). The two agree on wealth and do not address the same other subjects, so by Sl. 145-148 both stand. The engine's yoga detector reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for Venus and Mars, and nothing involving Saturn.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 8th lord in the 5th house in 261, or 8.7%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse is linked above; when the 5th and 8th lords occupy each other's signs, the exchange (parivartana) joins a trine lord with a dusthana lord. One house back, the 8th lord in the 4th (Sl. 88) is harsh about the mother and home; one house on, the 8th lord in the 6th (Sl. 90) defeats enemies and forms Sarala Yoga. The other trine placement is the 8th lord in the 9th.

  3. Classify its other house by Ch. 34 and read that lordship's verse for the 5th beside Sl. 89.

Questions about the 8th lord in the 5th

What does BPHS say about the 8th lord in the 5th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 89: a slow intellect and few children, but a long life and wealth. It is scaled by strength (Sl. 145-148) and is not a forecast.
Is the 8th lord in a trine good?
BPHS Ch. 34 says an 8th lord that also owns a trine bestows auspicious effects. Being placed in a trine is a different thing; Sl. 89 itself is mixed.
Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
Gemini (Saturn, also 9th lord, exalted in Libra), Virgo (Mars exalted), and Leo and Aquarius (the lord in its own 5th-house sign). Scorpio gives Mercury debilitated.
Is the 8th lord in the 5th a Vipareeta yoga?
No. The Vipareeta conditions place the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th (and, by a commentator's analogy, the 8th). The 5th is a trine, so the engine does not flag Sarala Yoga here.
Does it mean few children?
Sl. 89 names a limited number of children as one clause. The second lordship's verse can contradict it, and this app does not predict children.
How common is it?
261 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.7%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
