In short
Drishti means "sight" and is the Vedic word for an aspect: a graha or a sign looking at another house. BPHS describes two kinds, graha drishti between planets and rashi drishti between signs. This app computes both from the birth chart and shows them side by side, never merged.
What the term means
Drishti is Sanskrit for "sight" or "glance". In a chart it names an aspect: the influence one point casts on a house or sign some distance away, without sitting in it. Sitting together in one sign is a different relation, yuti. BPHS Ch. 30 and Ch. 36 routinely pair the two, "yuti with, or receiving a Drishti from", as the two ways a graha can bear on a point.
Where the term comes from
BPHS treats aspects twice. Ch. 8 Sl. 1-5 gives the drishti of the signs: a movable sign aspects the three fixed signs except the one next to it, a fixed sign the three movable signs except the adjacent one, a dual sign the other three dual signs, and a graha in a sign "gives the same Drishti" as its sign. Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 then introduces "the other kind", between grahas, counted in houses from the graha: the 3rd and 10th, the 5th and 9th, the 4th and 8th in rising quarter slabs, and the 7th in full, with Saturn, Jupiter and Mars given special full aspects. Later slokas of the same chapter turn the angle into a numeric strength.
How this app uses it
- Graha drishti is whole-sign and full only: every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, and Mars, Jupiter and Saturn add their special aspects. The partial quarter-strength aspects of BPHS Ch. 26 are not computed.
- Rashi drishti follows BPHS Ch. 8 by modality and is published beside graha drishti, never merged with it, because the two answer different questions.
- Both need a birth time: without an Ascendant there are no house numbers to report.
- Aspects feed the yoga tests (Gaj Kesari asks whether Jupiter is joined or aspected by a benefic) and the aspect part of the strength score, where benefic aspects add and malefic aspects subtract.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi (Pisces rising), the engine puts Saturn in the 9th house; it aspects the 11th (its 3rd), the 6th (its 10th) and the 3rd (its 7th). The Moon in Sagittarius in the 10th aspects only the 4th by graha drishti, but by sign it aspects the 1st, 4th and 7th, the houses holding the other three dual signs. The same chart, two systems, two answers.
