In short
Special aspects are the extra full aspects that BPHS Ch. 26 gives three grahas on top of the 7th-house aspect every graha casts: Mars on the 4th and 8th houses from itself, Jupiter on the 5th and 9th, and Saturn on the 3rd and 10th. This app applies exactly these three pairs and gives Rahu and Ketu none.
What the term means
In graha drishti, every planet aspects the 7th house from itself. Three planets aspect more: Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th houses from where it sits, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. These additional full aspects are what "special aspects" means.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 first sets out the aspects that every graha casts in part, on the 3rd and 10th, the 5th and 9th, and the 4th and 8th, in quarter steps up to the full 7th. It then says that Saturn, Jupiter and Mars have special drishtis on, respectively, the 3rd and 10th, the 5th and 9th, and the 4th and 8th: houses where other grahas give only a partial aspect, these three give a full one. Sl. 9-12 add separate rules for each of the three when the aspect is measured by degree.
How this app uses it
- Mars: 7th, plus 4th and 8th from its house.
- Jupiter: 7th, plus 5th and 9th.
- Saturn: 7th, plus 3rd and 10th.
- Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Rahu and Ketu: the 7th only.
- Houses are counted whole-sign, and the partial aspects and degree-based values of Ch. 26 are not computed. The aspects feed the yoga rules and the aspect part of the Shadbala score.
A small illustration
In the chart for 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Saturn sits in the 9th house. Its 7th aspect lands on the 3rd house; its special aspects land on the 11th (the 3rd from the 9th) and the 6th (the 10th from the 9th). Jupiter in the 11th reaches the 5th by its 7th aspect and the 3rd and 7th by its special aspects.
