In short
Rashi drishti is the aspect one sign casts on others, set by modality: a movable sign aspects the three fixed signs except its neighbour, a fixed sign the three movable signs except its neighbour, and a dual sign the other three dual signs. A graha takes the drishti of its sign. This app computes it beside graha drishti.
What the term means
Rashi drishti means "aspect of the sign". Unlike graha drishti, which a planet casts from where it sits, rashi drishti is a property of the twelve signs themselves: a sign aspects certain other signs whether or not anything occupies it, and any graha inside a sign shares that sign's aspects. The relation is mutual: if sign A aspects sign B, B aspects A.
Where the term comes from
BPHS gives it in Ch. 8, "Drishtis of the Rasis", before it reaches planetary aspects in Ch. 26. Sl. 1-3 set the rule by movable, fixed and dual signs, and add that the graha in a sign "gives the same Drishti". Sl. 6-9 describe a square or circular diagram for reading the aspects at a glance. The engine's own notes attribute the same rule to the Jaimini Sutras (1.1.23-25), which is why it is grouped with the Jaimini techniques here, such as Chara Dasha.
How this app uses it
- Each sign's modality (movable, fixed, dual) decides its three target signs; the excluded neighbour is the sign immediately after a movable sign, or immediately before a fixed one.
- The result is mapped onto whole-sign houses from the Ascendant, so the table needs a birth time.
- It is shown next to the graha drishti table in the same shape, by sign, by house and by planet, and never merged with it: the two systems often disagree, and are meant to.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi (Pisces rising), Saturn sits in Scorpio, a fixed sign in the 9th house. By sign it aspects the 2nd, 5th and 11th houses (Aries, Cancer and Capricorn), skipping Libra, the movable sign just before Scorpio. By graha drishti the same Saturn aspects the 3rd, 6th and 11th. Only the 11th is common to both lists.
