In short
The Arudha Lagna, or A1, is the Pada of the Ascendant. Count how many signs the Lagna lord sits from the Lagna, then count the same number again from the lord; the sign reached is the Arudha Lagna, with two exceptions from BPHS Ch. 29. This app computes it whenever the Ascendant is known.
What the term means
The Arudha Lagna is a second, derived Ascendant: a sign found from where the Lagna's own lord sits. Where the Lagna describes the person, this app's engine frames the Arudha Lagna as how the person's image and circumstances are seen by others. It is the first of the twelve Bhava padas, hence the label A1.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 29 Sl. 1-3 gives the method: the Pad of Lagn is the sign reached by counting from the Lagna lord as many signs as the lord is from the Lagna, and the bare word "Pad" means this one. Sl. 4-5 add two exceptions: a Pad cannot fall in its own house or in the 7th from it; if the count lands on the house itself take the 10th from it, and if on the 7th take the 4th. Ch. 31 Sl. 11-17 read argala on the Arudha Pad alongside the natal Lagna.
How this app uses it
- Count, whole-sign, from the Ascendant sign to the sign holding its lord; count the same distance again from the lord.
- If the result is the Ascendant sign, use the 10th from it; if it is the 7th sign, use the 4th.
- The result is reported as a sign and the house it falls in, with a short note. If it falls in the 1st, the note says the image and the person line up.
- It needs a birth time; see when the birth time is unknown.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Pisces rises and its lord Jupiter is in Capricorn, the 11th sign counted from Pisces. The 11th sign counted from Capricorn (Capricorn itself being the first) is Scorpio, which is neither Pisces nor its 7th, so no exception applies: the Arudha Lagna is Scorpio, the 9th house.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
